Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first episode was broadcast nationally in which year?

Answer: 1951

Although it was originally transmitted on the BBC Midlands Home Service on May 29, 1950, it wasn't until January 1, 1951, that it was broadcast to a national audience.
2. What is the name of the village in which the series is set?

Answer: Ambridge

The village is named after the river on which it is situated, the Am.
3. In which area of England is the series set?

Answer: The Midlands

The fictional county of Borsetshire is located somewhere between Birmingham and Cheltenham. Some "incoming" characters have Birmingham accents, while most of the locals sound more West Country, but the main Archer family use a standard English accent.
4. In 1955 a major character, Grace Archer, was killed off in very dramatic fashion on the same night as what?

Answer: The first commercial television broadcast.

All the events took place in 1955, but it has always been held that the BBC deliberately arranged for a major and dramatic storyline to "scupper" the beginning of commercial television in Britain, a claim they deny. But it seems like more than a coincidence.
5. What are the names of the couple who began the Archer dynasty, and who were the central characters in the early days?

Answer: Dan and Doris

While Dan was played by four actors from the start of the series to the character's death in April 1986, namely Harry Oakes, Monte Crick, Edgar Harrison and Frank Middlemass, Doris was only ever played by one actress, Gwen Berryman.
6. Whose catchphrase greeting was "Hello, me old pal, me old beauty"?

Answer: Walter Gabriel

The unmistakable voice of Chris Gittins made the character an unforgettable one.
7. Which Princess made a guest appearance in the series in 1984?

Answer: Princess Margaret

The NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) was doing a lot of work that year to raise its public profile, and Princess Margaret, president of the NSPCC, volunteered to make an appearance on the show to aid publicity. The Duke of Westminster was also on the show, round about the same time.
8. What is the name of the pub in the village?

Answer: The Bull

Although the Red Lion and the White Hart are two of the most common pub names in Britain, the pub in Ambridge, where, as with most soaps, a good deal of the action takes place, is called The Bull. The village also once had a pub called "The Cat and Fiddle" but this was closed down.
9. Although there are now several branches of the Archer family involved in farming in the series, what is the name of the farm which has been the main focus of attention over the years?

Answer: Brookfield

Originally a rented farm of 100 acres, the Archer family bought the land for Brookfield from the Squire, and later acquired more to make it the 400 plus acres it is in the series.
10. Everyone in the whole world has probably heard the theme tune at one time or another. Say the words "The Archers" in a crowded pub, and you can guarantee that people will start singing it -- but what is its name?

Answer: Barwick Green

Dum-di-dum-di-dum-di-dum... One of the most recognised theme tunes in the world has been played countless times during the 53 years the show has been on air (to 2004). There was an attempt to update the tune by playing it on an accordion to give it a more informal air, but it was not popular and was relegated to the omnibus version on a Sunday.
