Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Shrek" animated film series, a donkey named Donkey falls in love with a dragon named Dragon (how original). Together, they have mutant babies, called "dronkeys". In which of these "Shrek" films do the dronkeys appear first?

Answer: Shrek 2

In "Shrek 2" (2004), Donkey's wife, Dragon, is feeling down. It is later revealed that this was due to her laying some eggs. Donkey is introduced to his six children at the end of the film. Names are Eclair, Bananas, Peanut, Parfait, Coco, and Debbie. Oddly, in "Shrek the Third" (2007) the special red dronkey isn't shown, and in "Shrek Forever After" (2010) there are only four dronkeys.
2. Eeyore from A. A. Milne's "Winnie-the-Pooh" is often considered one of the most famous donkeys from western literature. He was one of Christopher Robin Milne's original stuffed toys. Why, though, was the name Eeyore chosen for Milne's novel?

Answer: It was named after the sound a donkey makes

In American English, a donkey's braying is called a "heehaw". The "r" in "Eeyore" then, was due to most during Milne's time speaking in non-rhotic English.

Eeyore first appeared in Milne's novel "Winnie-the-Pooh" in 1926. He became an animated character of Disney in 1966, and had a film specifically about him (also Disney) in 1983.
3. Donald O'Connor starred as a soldier in a 1950 film about a talking mule. Insisting the mule can talk, he is thrown in the psychiatric ward. Upon each release, he accomplishes something, again crediting the talking mule. What is the name of this famous talking pack animal?

Answer: Francis

"Francis" was a black and white comedy film released in 1950. Chill Wills provided the voice for Francis, the talking mule, in this film as well as other films starring "Francis" in the 1950s. Donald O'Connor plays Peter Stirling, a man who is insistent upon the fact that Francis is a talking mule!
4. As a certain puppet tries to be a "good boy", he gets into some pretty nasty trouble with some other boys. Acting as a little boy should not, the puppet started turning into a donkey! Which of these puppets was it?

Answer: Pinocchio

Pinocchio was a wooden puppet created by Geppetto who desired to become a real boy. As a wooden puppet, however, he lacked a conscience, which was replaced with Jiminy the Cricket. Ignoring Jiminy, Pinocchio went away to Pleasure Island where he became a bad boy. Eventually, he turned into a donkey. Realizing his mistakes, Pinocchio did his best to be a good boy, which, in turn, finally allowed him to become human.

His first appearance was in 1883 in "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio game to life as a Disney animated character in the 1940 film "Pinocchio".
5. A famous Shakespearean character is that of Bottom. Bottom was a man who was transformed into a donkey in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". What was Bottom's first name?

Answer: Nick

Nick Bottom was a character from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" who provided the "comic relief" of the play. He is perhaps most well known as the guy who Puck turned into a donkey (at least, just his head). "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596.
6. Puzzle is a talking donkey that is tricked into pretending to be Aslan by an ape named Shift. He joined the good side in the end, however. In which of these series does Puzzle appear?

Answer: Chronicles of Narnia

Puzzle appears in "The Last Battle" (the final book, published in 1956) in the "Chronicles of Narnia" series. He was a loyal donkey who was tricked to retrieve and wear a lion's skin to imitate Aslan. However, Puzzle finally turned against Shift, the evil ape, and joined Aslan in the 'Final Battle of Narnia'.
7. George Orwell's "Animal Farm" contained many animals, naturally. One of these animals was a wise old donkey who was also very pessimistic at times. What was the name of this donkey?

Answer: Benjamin

Benjamin was one of the oldest animals on Manor Farm in George Orwell's 1945 novel "Animal Farm". He might have been stubborn as a mule at time (pun intended), but he was a valuable asset to the animals; one of the few who could actually read. It was Benjamin, too, who realized the pigs were changing the Seven Commandments, and since Benjamin could read, he realized Boxer was not going to the hospital; but the slaughterhouse.

Boxer was a horse, Moses a raven, and Napoleon was a pig.
8. In the film "Holes", Stanley takes shelter under an old boat full of peaches. The boat was originally named after Sam the Onion Man's donkey. This donkey was supposedly very old; the onions she ate allowed her to live longer than the average donkey. What was the name of Sam's beloved mule?

Answer: Mary Lou

"Holes" was released in 2003 (originally published as a novel by Louis Sachar in 2002). In the film, Stanley Yelnats finds an old boat in the desert full of peaches. The boat seems out of place, but as the movie progresses, one can see the desert was once an entire lake.

The boat was originally owned by Sam, a black man who sold onions. He fell in love with a white woman, who traded him peaches for onions, and was killed for this love. He sank along with his boat, named after his donkey whom he loved dearly.

The donkey, as well as the boat, was named Mary Lou.
9. "The Ass in the Lion's Skin" is a very old fable about a donkey who dresses up as a lion to fool the other animals simply for his entertainment. The donkey, however, is discovered by a fox, who recognizes the donkey's bray. Who originally wrote this fable?

Answer: Aesop

"The Ass in the Lion's Skin" was one of "Aesop's Fables" (Or "Aesopica"), originally written between 620 and 560 BC. In this fable, a donkey entertains himself by scaring others animals by wearing a lion's skin. Fooling plenty of animals, the donkey finally goes to a fox, who is not amused.

He notices the skin, but hears the donkey bray, and realizes it's a trick. The moral is given as this phrase: "Clothes may disguise the fool, but his words will give him away."
10. In the 1940 Disney film "Fantasia", a donkey named Jacchus appeared as Bacchus' pet. He was attacked by Zeus along with Bacchus. In which "Fantasia" segment did he appear?

Answer: The Pastoral Symphony

Though Jacchus was not a character from the original myth, he did appear as a completely original Disney creation in the 1940 film "Fantasia". He was a drunk donkey with a golden horn (I suppose he was a unidonk), and very loyal to his master Bacchus. His fate was similar to that of Bacchus, where both were attacked by Zeus' lightning bolts.
