Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I need a bike," Detective Fish says, sounding grumpy. "Would one of you go over to where Steve Austin is fighting crime? He has those bionic legs, so he won't mind lending me his bike." Steve Austin was the hero in which 1970s television show?

Answer: The Six Million Dollar Man

The American television series "The Six Million Dollar Man" debuted in January of 1974, and ended in March of 1978. It was based on the 1972 novel "Cyborg", by Martin Caidin, and while there were numerous changes made in the series, the basic premise of the book was maintained. Following three successful 1973 made-for-tv movies, the series went into production as an hour-long weekly program.

In the television series, Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors, is an astronaut who was critically injured in a crash, but is 'rebuilt' with bionic legs, right arm and left eye. Working for the Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI), he uses his enhanced abilities as a secret agent fighting the forces of evil.

The series also featured appearances by Lindsay Wagner as a bionic woman - and she starred in the spin-off series "The Bionic Woman" from 1976 - 1978. After the "Six Million Dollar Man" ended in 1978, there were an additional three made-for-tv movies released in 1987, 1989 and 1994. 1989's "Bionic Showdown" co-starred Sandra Bullock as a new bionic woman.
2. "Darn it!" Detective Fish grumbles. "I still need a bike. There has got to be one over there in Milwaukee. Chachi, Ralph or Potsie probably all have bikes, and I'm sure they'd lend me one!" Detective Fish is hoping to borrow a bike from which television series?

Answer: Happy Days

While "Happy Days" started out as an unsuccessful 1971 pilot titled "New Family in Town", it went on to become a successful series which, beginning in 1974, ran for 11 seasons. Following Ron Howard's appearance in the 1973 movie "American Graffiti', creator Gary Marshall reworked the failed pilot, and renamed it "Happy Days". Starring Ron Howard, Marion Ross, Tom Bosley and Henry Winkler, the series followed the antics, problems and experiences of a Midwestern American family during the 1950s, in a half hour sitcom format. The series had a number of notable guest stars, including Hank Aaron, Robin Williams and Dr. Joyce Brothers.
3. Detective Fish shifts uncomfortably in his chair as he studies an arrest form. "A bike, that's what's missing." He drops the form on his desk, and says "Kelly might have one. Or Sabrina. If they don't, well, I can ask Jill. If they can't help, I'll ask Bosley to find a bike for me!" The ladies, and gentleman, Detective Fish is talking about appear on which television program?

Answer: Charlie's Angels

"Charlie's Angels" featured three female detectives solving crimes ranging from abduction to murder to embezzlement. While working for the Charles Townsend Detective Agency, the ladies never meet their boss, but, along with a go-between, they receive their assignments over the phone. With the angels often working undercover, in skimpy attire, the show earned the moniker 'jiggle tv'. The show ran from 1976 - 1981, with the first two seasons ranking in the top five on the Nielsen ratings.

The original angels were Jaclyn Smith, Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson, with David Doyle as the go-between, John Bosley. Farrah Fawcett left after the first season, but returned later for a few guest appearances. Over the show's 5-season run, there were several cast changes, with only Jaclyn Smith and David Doyle remaining with the show. And, of course John Forsythe, who gave voice to Charlie.
4. "Detective Fish needs a bike!" Captain Barney Miller barks. "One of you get over to the dock, and see if Gopher, Isaac or Doc has a bike he can borrow!" What show are Gopher and the other two characters from?

Answer: The Love Boat

Following three successful made-for-tv movies, and running from 1977 - 1986, "The Love Boat" featured a cast of regular crew members and an ever-changing list of guest stars. Each episode interwove the crews' actions and interactions with the guests, and the guests' own personal stories.

The hour-long romantic comedy combined three or four different storylines, with three or four different sets of writers, and focused on comedy, romance and drama. The original crew included Gavin MacLeod as Captain Stubing, Bernie Kopell as Doc, Fred Grandy as Gopher, and Ted Lange as Isaac. The list of guest stars is extensive, and includes all the stars from "Gilligan's Island", except for the Professor - Russell Johnson.
5. Detective Fish slaps the newspaper down, and says, "There's not a single bike for sale in the want ads! Say, remember those two guys who were in for questioning over a mess one made, and the other guy cleaned up? If I remember correctly, one of them is a sportswriter and the other a photographer. I bet one of those two will have a bike I can use!" In which show would these characters be found?

Answer: The Odd Couple

The half-hour sitcom,"The Odd Couple", features Felix Unger and Oscar Madison as two very different men, living together in a Manhattan apartment, and driving each other to distraction. Following the breakup of their marriages, the two struggle to co-exist, despite the fact that Felix is compulsively neat and organized, and Oscar is equally messy and careless. Starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman as the two main characters, the series ran from 1970 - 1975, and despite getting less than stellar ratings, both Curtis and Klugman won Emmys for their roles. Neil Simon's play, titled "The Odd Couple", premiered on Broadway in 1965, and in 1968 it was released as a film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

The play, and the movie, served as the basis for the television sitcom.
6. "How hard can it be to find a bike?" Detective Fish muses, staring up at the ceiling. "I wonder if Master Po, or Grasshopper, has one I could borrow? I may just head over to the Shaolin Monastery to find out." Which series are Master Po and Grasshopper from?

Answer: Kung Fu

Running from 1972 - 1975, "Kung Fu" starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest in search of his half-brother and his family roots. Set in the American Old West, Caine is forced, by his own spiritual training and sense of responsibility, to aid the helpless and downtrodden whenever he encounters cruelty or injustice. But, he is a wanted man in China, and due to his continual scrapes during his search, he must stay on the move in America to avoid capture.
Key Luke, who appeared in the Charlie Chan movies as 'Number One Son', starred as Master Po. Among other stars, the series included appearances by Keith Carradine and Robert Carradine (David's half-brothers), and John Carradine (their father).
The series spawned a few other creations, including 1986's "Kung Fu: The Movie", 1987's pilot "Kung Fu: The Next Generation", and "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues" - a series which ran from 1993 - 1997.
7. "What does it take to find a bike around here?' Detective Fish asks, sounding frustrated. "I think I'll go ask Kip Wilson and Henry Desmond if they have one to spare. As long as they're wearing skirts, they probably won't be doing much bicycling." Kip and Henry starred in which hit sitcom?

Answer: Bosom Buddies

In "Bosom Buddies", Kip Wilson, played by Tom Hanks, and Henry Desmond, played by Peter Scolari, are two young men working for an advertising agency. When the apartment in which they have been living is torn down, they become desperate to find an affordable place to live. Desperation leads them to the Susan B. Anthony Hotel, which is definitely affordable, but restricted to females tenants only. Despite their initial misgivings, they swap their clothes for feminine attire, and proceed to tangle themselves in a series of comical incidents.
The series ran from 1980 - 1982, and while it garnered good reviews at first, the show suffered from being moved from one time slot to another, and never developed much of a fan base.
8. "A bike," Detective Fish mutters. "How hard can it be to find a bike in this city? Maybe I'll ask Barbarino or Horshack. After all, the worst they could say is 'Up your nose with a rubber hose!' Right?" What sitcom featured Barbarino and Horshack?

Answer: Welcome Back, Kotter

"Welcome Back, Kotter" is centered around a teacher, Gabe Kotter, who returns to teach at the high school he attended. His students, most of them known as the Sweathogs, are unruly, undisciplined and seemingly neglected by the system. But, as a former Sweathog himself, Kotter sees their potential, and in between bouts of silly antics, pranks and verbal jousting, the students learn to appreciate him - and each other. The series ran from 1975 - 1979, and starred Gabe Kaplan, John Travolta, Ron Palillo, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Robert Hegyes.

The series was not without controversy, and raised the concerns of several groups. And, while the show debuted to high ratings, and maintained those ratings throughout the first two seasons, by the third season ratings were dropping and in the fourth the series was cancelled.
9. Detective Fish groans, and leans back in his chair. "Trying to find a bike is driving me crazy!" He closes his eyes and drums his fingers on the chair's arm. "Maybe Detective Tony has one. After all, with that cockatoo always around, he probably doesn't do much bike riding." Detective Tony, and his cockatoo, are on which series?

Answer: Baretta

Starring Robert Blake, "Baretta" featured Tony Baretta as a plainclothes detective with an unusual, and often unappreciated, approach to his job. A streetwise maverick, he solves his cases with little regard to police procedure, while honoring his own set of rules and ethics.
The series "Toma" premiered in 1973, and starred Tony Musante, but when Musante left the series in 1974, it was reworked. Renamed "Baretta", and starring Robert Blake, the series ran from 1975 - 1978. The series co-starred Tom Ewell, Michael D. Roberts, Dana Elcar and Fred the cockatoo.
10. "A bike. Just a bike," Detective Fish grumbles. "I am sure either Raj or Rerun will loan me a bike! I guess I better head over to Watts and ask them!" Which sitcom are Raj and Rerun on?

Answer: What's Happening!

Set in Watts, in Los Angeles, "What's Happening!" follows three African American teenage boys dealing with school, girls, jobs, opportunities and dreams - all of which inevitably involve some sort of comic element. Raj (Roger), Rerun (Freddy) and Dwayne also often have to deal with Raj's younger sister, Dee, his mother Mabel, and Shirley, the opinionated and feisty waitress at the diner the boys frequently visit. The series was written by Eric Monte, who also wrote 1975's "Cooley High" - parts of which served as the basis for "What's Happening!".

While the series earned only so-so ratings, it ran from 1976 - 1979, and spawned a sequel, "What's Happening Now!", which ran from 1985 - 1988.
