Question 1 of 10
1. We'll begin our tour with a fireworks show we unfortunately can no longer see in 2021 since it has been discontinued - but for the exactly 20 years it did run it was incredible and the "Peace on Earth" Christmas add-on was even more so. I am, of course, talking of Walt Disney World's "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth", but which of the four parks was it performed in? (The show's name should kind of point to the right one) Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Let's stay in Orlando for a bit - Universal Studios hosts a parade during the holiday season that is modeled after a major parade sponsored by a department store. If you check out the picture at full resolution and notice the city the area is themed after, I am sure you'll probably know which one it is. Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. We're still in Florida, but the setting of this picture is a good bit away from Orlando. In fact, while Christmas is kind of associated with the North Pole, this is rather for the South Pole. Thus knowing that this picture was taken at an Antarctic-themed attraction, it comes from which park? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. This picture is quite a few years old, dating from the 1970s, however Knott's Berry Farm has been running a Christmas event ever since. For that event, the park is slightly renamed, resulting in which moniker? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Let's travel across the Atlantic and have a look at some European parks for a change. This image of an interesting holiday decoration was taken at a Scandinavian park (where you might not immediately suspect a winter opening given the weather). Given this information, which of the following parks would be the one this picture was taken at? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Phantasialand, located in Brühl, is one of two German parks featuring a winter opening. Their "Wintertraum" event (meaning "winter dream") features opening times well into the darkness as well as a special show lineup. Among these shows, certainly the most spectacular one is "The Magic Rose", an evening show with a fairy tale theme held on an ice rink. If you closely look at the picture, you can probably guess its subtitle, which is...? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Those of you who know my theme park preferences know that I wouldn't write a mixed quiz without somehow mentioning Europa Park and I won't break the pattern for this one. While most rides at Europa Park are open during winter, the Atlantica Supersplash (a very wet water ride) is not among them. But with it being the only ride in the Portugal area, it needs a replacement so we wouldn't miss a whole country during the winter season. Looking at the picture, you can probably tell me which kind of ride operates in its place? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. We don't need to stop at installing a temporary ride during the winter season - how about a whole theme park that only operates for the holidays? In fact, that's what you can get in London with "Winter Wonderland". You not only get a Christmas market but also a full-fledged theme park / carnival including major roller coasters and a huge Ferris wheel. Where would you have to head in December to experience it? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. So you want some Christmas vibe in a theme park but it just happens to not be December right now? Well, at Universal Islands of Adventure, you can at least have winter any day of the year at the depicted location. Where was this picture taken? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. A taste of winter with a bit of an advent vibe is not enough for you? You want a real Christmas celebration on any day of the year? And while you're at it, add Thanksgiving, Halloween, Fourth of July and New Year's Eve into the mix for one big holiday of holidays? Look no further than Holiday World, a theme park where every single attraction is based on the major holidays on the North American schedule. Which town would you have to travel to visit that park? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
(The show's name should kind of point to the right one)

Answer: EPCOT

Over the years, EPCOT hosted several shows using the IllumiNations name, but none of them came close to the success of "Reflections of Earth". During advent and Christmastime, the main show (which used over 2500 fireworks) was extended with a special segment based on "Peace on Earth". That portion consisted of a first softly sung verse, then "peace on earth" greetings in many languages and finally a second, glorious rendition of the song that ends in an explosive finale.

While the main show music is readily available for purchase, getting hold of a clean copy (without the firework noises) of the holiday tag's music is nigh impossible which is a real pity because I think it easily ranks among the 10 most moving holiday musics ever performed.
2. Let's stay in Orlando for a bit - Universal Studios hosts a parade during the holiday season that is modeled after a major parade sponsored by a department store. If you check out the picture at full resolution and notice the city the area is themed after, I am sure you'll probably know which one it is.

Answer: Macy's

Did you see the various signs that point to New York City? If so, you probably had no problems identifying a moviefied version of Macy's Holiday Parade. All of the other options for stores were in Europe - Harrod's is in London, KaDeWe in Berlin and GUM is Moscow's prime department store.

Universal Resort Orlando runs differently themed holiday events in its two parks - the one in Islands of Adventure is called Grinchmas.
3. We're still in Florida, but the setting of this picture is a good bit away from Orlando. In fact, while Christmas is kind of associated with the North Pole, this is rather for the South Pole. Thus knowing that this picture was taken at an Antarctic-themed attraction, it comes from which park?

Answer: Sea World Orlando

Now if you love theme parks and similar attractions and have ever been to Florida, you most likely visited all four of these, but the only attraction among them that would fit the Antarctic theme is "Empire of the Penguin", a cute trackless dark ride that deposits riders in a penguin animal exhibit at Sea World Orlando.
4. This picture is quite a few years old, dating from the 1970s, however Knott's Berry Farm has been running a Christmas event ever since. For that event, the park is slightly renamed, resulting in which moniker?

Answer: Knott's Merry Farm

Knott's has been running a full-fledged "Knott's Merry Farm" holiday event since 1985 in the wake of the success of the 1973 "Knott's Scary Farm" Halloween one. However, this 1970s picture shows that some Christmas activities have taken place at the park even earlier (although I could not find any more detailed documentation). Like many other California parks, Knott's is open year round and runs special celebrations for all major holidays.
5. Let's travel across the Atlantic and have a look at some European parks for a change. This image of an interesting holiday decoration was taken at a Scandinavian park (where you might not immediately suspect a winter opening given the weather). Given this information, which of the following parks would be the one this picture was taken at?

Answer: Liseberg

All of these parks are worth a visit, but Liseberg, located in Sweden, would be the only Scandinavian option among the four and also the only one open during the Christmas season. Movie Park Bottrop, located in Germany, closes for the winter after its famous Halloween festival and the other two - Gardaland in Italy and Parc Astérix in France - do not, as of 2021, run any seasonal events.

Answer: Spirit of Light

"The Magic Rose - Spirit of Light" is a fairy tale show with a Cinderella theme. A poor girl is selling roses on a Christmas market, but due to her shabby appearance, she's shunned by all. Only one old lady will buy a flower from her, but she has magical powers and returns the rose to the girl immediately after enchanting it into a magical wand that allows the poor girl to give the gift of light to all present. Each performer in the show wears a special costume with lights and once touched with the flower, they light up and see the spirit of goodness. A chariot with the queen of lights arrives as seen in the picture and the whole show ends in a great display of lights and fireworks.

While I would not recommend missing the actual show for it, here's a special thing to do if you have already seen it and have another day: Line up for the "Black Mamba" roller coaster's front row just before park closing and with some luck, you'll be able to ride it into the spectacular fireworks - a truly unique experience.

Answer: A Ferris wheel

Atlantica Supersplash is a hybrid between a roller coaster and a log flume. Boats are pulled up a chain lift, then traverse a section of coaster track backwards and finally race down a steep hill and a camelback before splashing down. While the ride offers some control over the degree of wetness (and as such can open safely in late fall or early spring) it's not suitable for near-freezing or worse temperatures. Instead, a large (well over 50m / 150ft) traveling Ferris wheel is making a stop at the park, being built over part of Atlantica's track, every winter season. Most of the park's water rides including the log flume actually operate even in winter, the only other exception being the "Fjord rafting" ride whose track is partially built over by a Scandinavian winter village featuring a Christmas market, a skating rink and a Santa Claus meet and greet.

Beginning in 2021, Europa Park has skipped the usual closing in November and did a seamless changeover from Halloween to Christmas with the park remaining open under the new name of "HalloWinter". It's a unique blend of Halloween and Christmas and, for people like me, who like to cram as many rides into a day as they can, features virtually nonexistent lines. Just staying on a major coaster for 10 rides in a row is a real possibility here!

Answer: Hyde Park

I hope you got this one right - both Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square are important road intersections that you can't just block for several weeks and while I don't thing her Majesty the Queen would mind a private theme park, I don't think she'd be as keen on inviting the general public into her residence.

The answer, is, of course, Hyde Park, the largest of the four Royal parks and one of London's foremost public spaces. While Winter Wonderland was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, it returned in 2021 with a full lineup of over 100 attractions and countless vendors.
9. So you want some Christmas vibe in a theme park but it just happens to not be December right now? Well, at Universal Islands of Adventure, you can at least have winter any day of the year at the depicted location. Where was this picture taken?

Answer: Hogsmeade (Wizarding World of Harry Potter)

Hogsmeade was one of the first areas of Universal's Harry Potter experience to open, together with Hogwarts Castle (featuring the "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" ride) and the Forbidden Forest, which features two roller coasters, "Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure" and "Flight of the Hippogriff". Out of these areas, only Hogsmeade is consistently stuck in winter, matching the first time the village was seen in the novels and movies. The only attraction at Hogsmeade itself is, slightly out of tune with the plot of the books and movies, Ollivander's wand shop, which should properly be located at Diagon Alley, the Harry Potter area of the adjacent Universal Studios park.

The two "Harry Potter" sections at Universal Orlando are connected by the Hogwarts Express attraction, which is somewhat unique in that it is not really considered part of either of the two parks but rather links them so you can only ride it if you have a park hopper ticket.

Answer: Santa Claus, Indiana

Out of these four locations, Santa Claus, Indiana, is the only one that actually exists. The town was originally founded as Santa Fe, but since there already was a town of that name in the state, the town council ultimately decided on the Santa Claus name. Various entrepreneurs decided to exploit that name for tourism beginning in the 1930s and, just after World War II, Santa Claus Land opened as the world's first themed amusement park. It remained an entirely Christmas themed park until 1984 when it added a Halloween and a Fourth of July area and renamed itself to Holiday World.

The Christmas section features no major rides, so I decided on the Firecracker for a picture - it's located in the Fourth of July section but, of course, it can also stand in for New Year. Happy Holidays!
