Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie, "A Christmas Story", Ralphie Parker wanted something for Christmas very badly. Throughout the movie he was told that he would "shoot his eye out" if he got one. What gift did he want?

Answer: Red Ryder BB Gun

To be precise, he wanted an official Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle. Poor Ralphie couldn't even get Santa on his side, because even Santa told him that he would shoot his eye out.

"A Christmas Story" is a 1983 movie that has become a holiday classic. In 1997, Turner Broadcasting began running a marathon of the movie every Christmas season. The marathon starts on the evening of Christmas Eve and they air the movie for 24 hours. Throughout the years the marathon has been on TNT and/or TBS, which are both owned by Turner Broadcasting.
2. Who recorded the original version of the song, "Blue Moon of Kentucky"?

Answer: Bill Monroe

Bill Monroe wrote "Blue Moon of Kentucky" in 1946. He and his band, The Blue Grass Boys, were the first to record it, but many other artists have covered the song.
3. "The Green Mile" was a 1999 movie which starred Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan. The movie was actually adapted from a novel of the same name. Who was the author?

Answer: Stephen King

Although these other authors did have some of their books made into movies, "The Green Mile" is the work of Stephen King. Many of his books are set in Maine, but this one is set in Louisiana.
4. Who wrote the novel "The Scarlet Letter"?

Answer: Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel "The Scarlet Letter" was published in 1850. The story tells of a young woman who is found guilty of committing adultery and must wear a scarlet "A" to shame her.
5. Which band had hits such as "Payphone" and "Moves Like Jagger"?

Answer: Maroon 5

Maroon 5 is an American pop rock band. They released their debut album, "Songs About Jane", in 2002. Maroon 5 took home the Grammy for the Best New Artist of 2005.
6. On the American TV show "Gilligan's Island", there was a character that had a name that not only sounded like a color, but also a spice. What was her name?

Answer: Ginger

Tina Louise played Ginger Grant, the movie star who took the "three-hour tour" that got shipwrecked. "Gilligan's Island" ran from 1964-1967, so I guess you could say it was more like a "three-year tour".
7. On the movie, "The Sixth Sense", the character that shot Bruce Willis had a colorful name. Do you remember what it was?

Answer: Vincent Grey

Bruce Willis' character was a child psychologist and treated Vincent for hallucinations, but wasn't able to help him. When Vincent became an adult, he found the doctor and shot him out of frustration that he had failed him.
8. "That '70s Show" was an American TV show that centered on a group of high school friends. One of the fathers was named "Red" Forman. Who played that character?

Answer: Kurtwood Smith

Chuck Norris was the initial choice to play "Red" Forman, but he was still filming "Walker, Texas Ranger". Kurtwood Smith then won the role and has done such a great job with bringing the character to life that it would be hard to picture anyone else playing that role. "That '70s Show" was set in Wisconsin and Kurtwood Smith was the only cast member actually from that state.
9. Who sang the 1977 hit song "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue"?

Answer: Crystal Gayle

"Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" was written by Richard Leigh. In 2004, Crystal Gayle stated in an interview that the composer was inspired to write the song, because his dog had one brown eye and one blue. It was her biggest hit and it won her a Grammy Award in 1978 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
10. Who was the cartoonist that created the beloved character Charlie Brown?

Answer: Charles Schulz

Charles Schulz was born on November 26, 1922. "Peanuts", his cartoon strip which featured Charlie Brown, was first printed in 1950. The final strip was published the day after he passed away. He died in his sleep on February 12, 2000.
