The story of Little Red Riding Hood is said to originate in the 14th century, when it was told in France. In the 17th century the story was added to a collection by French writer Charles Perrault, called "Histoires et contes du temps passé, avec des moralités, Contes de ma mčre l'Oye". In the 19th century the story was further made popular when the two German linguists Jakob and Wilhem Grimm added it to one of their many fairy tale collections. The story was told to them by two members of the Hassenpflug family.

Little Red Riding Hood is a young girl who goes to bring food (mostly cookies in several versions) to her sick grandmother. She is wearing a traditional red cap, hence her name. In the forest she meets a wolf, who stalls her and in the meantime eats her grandmother. The wolf disguises himself as the grandmother and finally eats Little Red Riding Hood as well, after she asked a series of questions like how big grandmother's hands and teeth are (when noticing how strange her grandma looks). A hunter comes to save the day and rescues both Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother by cutting the wolf open. The tale is said to be about the dangers young women can face in the world, with men acting as wolf-like predators.

In the movie "Red" Bruce Willis portrays CIA agent Frank Moses, who is now retired. The only fun in life he still has is talking to a girl called Sarah Ross, who works at the pension office in Kansas City. His life is seriously turned upside down, when a hit squad is sent to kill him. He kidnaps Sarah and goes in search of his former CIA team mates to find out who is after him. He learns that he is marked with a code "RED" for Retired Extremely Dangerous. Together with his former partners he tries to fight the enemy. Bruce Willis was born as Walter Bruce Willis on March 19, 1955 in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. One of his most famous roles is that of detective John McClane on the "Die Hard" movies. He also starred in movies like "Twelve Monkeys", "The Sixth Sense" and "Pulp Fiction".

In the 1996 comic series "Kingdom Come" the character of Dick Grayson is seen as the "Red Robin". In this series he appears without his mentor Batman. He is said to have a daughter called Nightstar by his wife Starfire. He is estranged from Batman, but by the end of the series he reunites with his former mentor. After this appearance, characters like Jason Todd and Tim Drake have taken up the role of "Red Robin".

The character of Dick Grayson is well known in the "Batman" comic books. His parents were killed by the mafia and Bruce Wayne (the alter ego of Batman) takes him on as his legal ward. "The Hunt for Red October" is the first novel to be published by Tom Clancy in 1984. It introduces us to CIA agent Jack Ryan. The story is about Lithuanian officer Marko Alexandrovich Ramius, who has a high post in the navy of the Soviet Union. He wants to defect to the United States and take the experimental submarine "The Red October" with him. A Soviet fleet is sent out to sink the ship. The US navy realises the importance of the ship and manages to locate it with the help of CIA analyst Jack Ryan. A hunt starts, among rising tension between the Soviet Union and the USA, to be the one to finally capture the ship.

Tom Clancy was born on April 12, 1947 in Baltimore County, USA. He is known for writing thrillers involving espionage and military themes, with often a Cold war background. Several of his novels have been turned into successful movies. "The Hunt for Red October" was made into a movie in 1990 and starred Alec Baldwin as CIA agent Jack Ryan.

In 1983 Jim Henson devised a puppet show called "Fraggle Rock". It was about a group of very lively creatures living deep underground and having lots of fun. One of the characters on the show was Red Fraggle, an excellent swimmer. She is yellow in colour and has red hair. She was performed by Karen Prell.

Jim Henson was born as James Maury Henson on September 24, 1936 in Greenville, USA. He was a very successful puppeteer, creating shows like "The Muppet Show" and "Sesame Street". He died in 1990 of a pneumonia. Henson famously voiced "Kermit the Frog", the main host of "The Muppet Show" and actually has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as both himself and as Kermit.

The "Pokémon" game was created in 1996 by game designer Satoshi Tajiri for Nintendo's Game Boy console. In the game the players acts as a trainer of Pokémon characters. It is originally a role-playing game, but the characters are now also featured in anime, manga, books and films.

The Pokémon character "Red" first featured in "Pokémon Red and Blue", released in 1996. He is the male lead in this story. The character also features in the "Pokémon Adventures", a manga based on the video games. Here he is seen as a trainer in the town of Poliwhirl initially. He makes several appearances in the various stories, like the "Yellow" Saga and the "FireRed/LeafGreen" Saga.

In "Red Rock West" Nicolas Cage plays a drifter called Michael Williams, who ends up in the city of Red Rock in the American state Wyoming, looking for work. The bar owner Wayne thinks he is a hitman he has hired to kill his wife and gives him half the money. Michael tries to warn Wayne's wife Suzanne (played by Lara Flynn Boyle) that her life is in danger. He wants to leave town, but due to many complications he fails to do so. Lara Flynn Boyle was born on March 25, 1970 in Davenport, USA. She first shot to fame playing the role of Donna Hayward on the TV series "Twin Peaks", playing the best friend of Laura Palmer, who was murdered in the city of Twin Peaks. She also starred on "The Practice", portraying lawyer Helen Gamble.

Singer Mick Hucknall was formerly in a band called "The Frantic Elevators". When that band collapsed, Hucknall and some fellow musicians started a band called "Red". The single "Holding Back the Years" is from their debut album "Picture Book". The song was written by Mick Hucknall at the age of seventeen. It was inspired by his mother leaving at the age of three and the turmoil that event caused in his life.

The idea for M&M's originated in the 1930s, when Forrest Mars saw soldiers in the Spanish Civil War eating chocolate pellets, protected by a hard shell of chocolate. He patented the invention in 1941. The candy has different fillings and features various colours, like red, yellow, blue and brown. Each candy has a little M on the side.

In the 1990's the company introduced the concept of "spokescandies" in their commercials. "Red" was one of them and seen as a somewhat cynical character, first voiced by Jon Lovitz. Later Billy West took over as the voice of "Red". "Red" was the spokesperson for the milk chocolate M&M's, while his partner "Yellow" was the symbol for the peanut M&M's.

In 1982 Stephen King wrote a novella called "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", as part of the collection "Different Seasons". The story was narrated by a prisoner called "Red". He can smuggle anything into jail, including a Rita Hayworth poster for fellow inmate Andy, a banker jailed for murder. Years later Andy manages to escape. Behind the poster he has used his rock hammer to create a hole in the wall. Andy has confided in "Red" earlier about where to find a key to the place where has hidden the proceeds of the sale of his assets, under a pseudonym. After "Red" has been paroled, he gets a postcard from Andy directing him to that place, enabling him to join Andy in Mexico.

In 1994 the novella was made into a movie. Tim Robbins stars as Andy and Morgan Freeman takes up the role of "Red", narrating the story. The movie received several Academy Award nominations, including "Best Actor" for Morgan Freeman.
