Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Best hand: King of hearts, jack of hearts, ten of hearts

Answer: Ace of hearts, queen of hearts

As your top hand, you will need a Royal flush - Ace, king, queen, jack and ten of the same suit. Your only way to complete this is to use the two missing hearts.

The chance to make a Royal flush when just drawing five cards from a deck is just 1 in 649,740.
2. 2nd best: King of spades, jack of spades, ten of spades

Answer: Queen of spades, nine of spades

If you can't have a Royal flush, a straight flush is the next best thing. You need five card ranks in a row, all of the same suit, with the top card being anything but the ace. From the options, only the queen and nine of spades will qualify.

The odds of drawing a straight flush in a five-card hand are still bad: 1 in 72,193.
3. 3rd best: Ace of clubs, eight of clubs, eight of spades

Answer: Eight of hearts, eight of diamonds

The third best hand is four of a kind - four cards of the same rank. Since you have two eights in hand, you'll need two more.

The chance for this hand is a bit better than for the above ones: 1 in 4,165.
4. 4th best: Nine of hearts, three of hearts, three of spades

Answer: Nine of diamonds, nine of clubs

To make a full house, you need three of one rank and two of another. With the given cards, you'd need either two nines or a nine and a three. Only the two nines were available.

The chance to draw a full house is at least better than one in a thousand: It's 1 in 694.
5. 5th best: Seven of diamonds, five of diamonds, three of diamonds

Answer: King of diamonds, ten of diamonds

If we had a six and four of diamonds, we could make a straight flush out of this hand. However, the best we can do is to make a flush - five cards of the same suit, but not in consecutive ranks.

Your chance to draw a flush in a five-card hand is just better than that of a full house: 1 in 509.
6. 6th best: Six of clubs, three of clubs, two of clubs

Answer: Five of hearts, four of spades

This is another straight flush candidate, but with the given cards the best we can do is a basic straight: Five cards in consecutive ranks, not all of the same suit.

The chance to draw a straight is, somewhat astonishingly, much better than that of drawing a flush: 1 in 255.
7. 7th best: Six of hearts, six of diamonds, five of spades

Answer: Seven of clubs, six of spades

Now we're getting into the range of hands you might see frequently in your poker games: Three of a kind, also called trips, simply calls for three cards of the same rank and two arbitrary cards. A pair of fives would complete this hand to a full house, so you need a six and any other card.

The chance for this hand to occur on a random 5-card draw is better than 2%: It's slightly less than 1 in 47.
8. 8th best: Ace of diamonds, jack of clubs, two of spades

Answer: Jack of diamonds, two of hearts

If we can't match three cards, we can at least make two pair. With the available cards, only the jack of diamonds and two of hearts will work. Neither an ace-jack combination nor an ace-two one were offered.

The chance for this hand is almost 5%: approximately 1 in 21.
9. 9th best: King of clubs, queen of clubs, ten of clubs

Answer: Four of hearts, four of diamonds

Such a beautiful start and we can't make anything of it. We neither have an ace and jack or nine and jack to make a straight, nor do we have two clubs to make a flush. In order not to have an absolute "nothing" hand (and to get the correct hand type for this option), add the pair of fours.

The chance to draw this hand type if you just pick five cards from a deck is 42.25%.
10. Worst hand: Ace of spades, queen of diamonds, seven of hearts

Answer: Five of clubs, two of diamonds

The worst hand type is no pair, also called "high card". More than half of all 5-card hands - 50.118% to be pretty exact - is of this type. Once you eliminated all the other options, you can complete this one with the five and the two.
