Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'll start with an F: Before it was found to be carcinogenic, asbestos was valued in construction because it was noncandescent, or in other words, what?

Answer: Fireproof

Asbestos is a class of silicate minerals with a fibrous structure. It was, in various forms, added to gypsum and concrete to improve the resistance of buildings to fire. Unfortunately, tiny fragments of asbestos breaking off the material cause a very high risk of lung cancers, so the material had to be phased out. In many cases, safe asbestos removal has proven to be very difficult.
2. For my second question, I absolutely wanted a word beginning and ending with a U. This proved quite difficult, but I found a traditional knife used by Inuit and Aleut people. What is it named?

Answer: Ulu

An ulu, literally "women's knife" is used by various arctic tribes for skinning and filleting animals. The other options all exist, but are not exactly something you could wield: Urdu is a language primarily spoken in Pakistan, Uluru is the aboriginal name for Ayers Rock, Australia, and Uhuru is a political movement based on African Internationalism.
3. How about N? Here are some five-letter words beginning and ending with N - which of them is a month on the Hebrew calendar?

Answer: Nisan

Nisan is the first month of the Hebrew ecclesiastical calendar, beginning around the spring equinox. Passover falls on the 15th of the month. Nairn is a Scottish town and former district, niton is an old name for radon (the noble gas with atomic number 86) and nylon, is of course, a synthetic fabric.
4. How about some T? Which of these would be found absconding from school?

Answer: Truant

The word truant can be used as a noun, an adjective and a verb, all in the same general meaning. A treant is a fantasy creature, usually shown as a walking tree similar to Tolkien's ents. A tenant occupies a rented property and a trivet is a tripod-like stand used in open fire cooking.
5. The next words "R" all rather commonly heard, but apart from their main meaning, which of them is also a term in Texas Hold'em poker?

Answer: River

The River is the term for the fifth and last community card in Texas Hold'Em poker. After the first betting round based only on the two secret cards held by each player, there are three community deals - first the flop (three cards), then the turn (a fourth card) and finally the river.

After that last deal and a final betting round, players make the best five-card hand they can out of the seven cards available to them - their own two and the communal five.
6. All of these "I" words are - at least in some way - plurals. Which of them refers to male demons?

Answer: Incubi

Incubi, and their female counterparts, succubi, are demons of lust that seduce the respective opposite gender to engage them in sinful activity. An isthmus is a narrow bridge of land connecting two larger land masses, Illini is an alternate name for the Illinois Confederation (as well as a University of Illinois sports team) and Infiniti is the plural of the Latin "infinitus" - "unfinished" - as well as a Nissan-owned car brand.

It's not a very trustworthy name in my opinion.
7. What's next? V? I give up - I won't even try to find a proper word in the English language that both begins and ends in V. But which of these is the first name of the first president of the Czech Republic (1993-2003)?

Answer: Vaclav

Vaclav Havel was the last president of Czechoslovakia (1989 to 1992) and continued to serve in that function for the Czech Republic for ten more years after the country's split. Veljkov is a Serbian last name, possibly best known for Vera Veljkov-Medakovic, a classical pianist. Mikhail Vorontsov was a Russian prince in the 19th century and Vladislav is a common first name in several Slavic languages.
8. More I? This isn't exactly an easy letter to deal with. But let's see: Which of these is the plural of a metrical unit in verse?

Answer: Iambi

Iambi is a correct plural of iamb (or iambus), the metric unit consisting of one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one. The other options are: Iceni, the former Celtic tribe of which Boudicca was queen, Inari, a Shinto god / spirit (Okami) and an Iraqi is an inhabitant or native of Iraq.
9. How about an "A"? Out of the following four "A" words, which would you probably NOT hear in a medical context?

Answer: Abaca

Abaca is a banana plant native to the Philippines. It is cultivated not for its fruit but for the strong fibers that can be used to make various textiles as well as specialty paper. The aorta is the main artery, the atria are two of the four chambers of the heart and apnea is the lack of breathing.
10. It's surprisingly difficult to find "S" words that aren't just plurals, feminine forms or "-less". I'll have to resort to medicine again - which of these would you not want to have treated?

Answer: Sulcus

The ending -itis indicates an inflammation. In this question, we have splenitis (an inflammation of the spleen) and sarcitis (an inflammation of muscle tissue). Sepsis is an uncontrolled, usually life-threatening infection often leading to quick multiple organ failure. A sulcus however is one of the many small grooves on the surface of the brain and thus a useful anatomical feature.
11. Many "P" words can be used both as verbs and nouns. Which of these is ONLY a noun?

Answer: Pomp

Even in the direst of circumstances, pomp is only a noun. You can pulp fruit, you can pump liquids or you can prop up things.
12. We'll revisit the "R": Which of the following is a light sword, similar to an epee?

Answer: Rapier

A rapier is a thrusting sword, usually about one meter / 40 inches long and very thin. It was carried mostly by civilians who needed a weapon for self-defense. Due to its low weight and thrusting technique, it was a relatively effective weapon in the hands of a person with little training.
13. I'm out of real "I" words, so let's first look at some 4-letter options. None of these are words you could legally use in Scrabble, but which of them would you expect to see in a Christian church?

Answer: INRI

I.N.R.I. is a Latin acronym - Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum - meaning, Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews. According to the New Testament, this inscription was placed upon the crucifix. The other options are Ieri, the Italian word for "yesterday", Iasi, a city in Eastern Romania and Ifni, a former Spanish province in Morocco.
14. Almost there, but I have some more "N" for you. Which of these actually has mass?

Answer: Neutron

Both nonagons and nouns are abstract concepts and as such do not have mass. The Norns were female godlike beings in Norse mythology equivalent to the Greek and Roman fates. A neutron is a subatomic particle.
15. Finally, I have another dose of "T" for you. All of these are abstract terms, but one of them is also an ancient Roman weight and currency unit. Which one?

Answer: Talent

A talent was quite heavy - it corresponded to the weight of an amphora, which translated into approximately 30 kilograms (66 lbs). Persons rendering particularly valuable services were sometimes rewarded with a talent of silver or even gold - quite a fortune!
