Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have to fight tooth and nail to get Little Susie to sit down and read with me. There are a number of children's books about going to the dentist but her favorite is Curious George. Who created Curious George?

Answer: Margret and H. A. Rey

Books for children are one form of entertainment that have a lot of portrayals of dentists. To help ease a common fear of kids, dentists in kids books are shown as friendly and helpful. The portrayal in "Curious George Visits the Dentist" is no different. To further instill good practices in children, George is looking for a healthy snack and takes a bite out of what he thinks is a real apple but is in fact a wax apple. He gets a loose tooth and has to visit the dentist. He's scared and tries to hide but ends up in the dentist's chair and everything turns out just fine.

Curious George first appeared in the book "Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys." He was such a successful character that Margret and H. A. Rey decided to give him his own book. He's now a franchise.
2. Little Susie and I get to the movies by the skin of our teeth. Which movie starring Dustin Hoffman includes a famous dental torture scene and is probably a bad choice to bring her to?

Answer: Marathon Man

"Marathon Man" is a 1976 thriller starring Dustin Hoffman as a grad student and avid runner named Thomas "Babe" Levy. Babe gets caught up in a conspiracy surrounding Nazi war criminals and stolen diamonds. In the infamous dentist torture scene, a Nazi war criminal turned dentist played by Laurence Olivier uses his dental tools to torture Babe until Babe is able to escape.

The movie is quite violent but actually had a number of more graphic scenes and a longer dental torture scene cut after a showing in San Francisco that did not go over well with audiences.
3. I thought Little Susie was going to bite my head off so we decided to listen to some music to help us both relax. This band is probably best known for "Fireflies" but they also sing the song "Dental Care." Can you name them?

Answer: Owl City

The song "Dental Care" can be found on the 2009 Owl City album named "Ocean Eyes." The song is upbeat as the singer talks about brushing his teeth and getting ready to go to the dentist, but still being a bit nervous. The dentist is pleasant but has a bit of a menacing undertone as he tells the singer "this will pinch just a bit." The song was not released as a single, doesn't have an accompanying video and must have a deeper meaning than visiting the dentist...I just don't know what that deeper meaning is.

The popular song "Fireflies" was released from the same album, reaching number one on the Billboard chart. That song seems to be about the little glowing bugs.
4. Through clenched teeth I got Little Susie to the theater to watch a stage production of which movie and musical with a sadistic dentist, a man-eating plant and a song called "Dentist!". What did we go see?

Answer: Little Shop of Horrors

"Little Shop of Horrors" is a horror comedy musical written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman that played on Broadway in 1982. The musical is based on a 1960 film of the same name. A film based on the 1982 stage production was made in 1986 starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. Seymour is a nerd who works at a flower shop and has a crush on his co-worker Audrey.

He discovers a mysterious plant that has the taste for blood and he names that plant Audrey II. The dentist in all of this is an awful, sadistic man (a familiar portrayal of dentists unfortunately) named Orin Scrivello who also happens to be Audrey's boyfriend. Don't worry, the brutal dentist gets his just desserts....actually Audrey II gets dessert courtesy of Orin.
5. I tried to find a female dentist to give Little Susie a positive female role model so we watched this movie starring Jennifer Aniston as a dentist. It was a horrible choice. Which movie left a bad taste in our mouths?

Answer: Horrible Bosses

Another awful dentist character! Jennifer Aniston plays Dr. Julia Harris who tortures one of her employees (named Dale) by constantly making unwanted sexual advances toward him, despite the fact that he is not interested. She also threatens Dale with telling his fiancée that they did sleep together, even though that is not true. Dale is undeservedly on a sexual predator list and can't quit his job. Dale and two other friends who also have terrible bosses decide that they need to kill their bosses and hilarity ensues.
6. Butter didn't melt in Little Susie's mouth while we were watching this Disney movie. In "Finding Nemo" what is the name of the dentist who has the aquarium in his office?

Answer: Dr. Sherman

If you've seen "Finding Nemo" then you remember Dory saying "P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney". In this funny Disney film, Nemo is caught by a diver while swimming beyond where his father ever lets him. He is taken to a fish tank in a dental office in Sydney and his father is left behind trying to piece the clues together of where his son went. Dory is a fish with short-term memory loss who help's Nemo's dad find him and is thrilled that one of the things she can remember is "P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney".

This is of course the name and address of the dentist where Nemo is taken. Dr. Sherman isn't a great dentist and his real passion is scuba diving. He is going to give Nemo as a gift to his unruly niece Darla who the tank fish are rightly terrified of.
7. Little Susie and I cut our teeth on some interesting portrayals of dentists. What book does a dentist use to terrorize Ralph Wiggum in the TV show "The Simpsons" after Ralph turns his office into a "house of lies"?

Answer: The Big Book of British Smiles

This hilarious scene is from the "Last Exit to Springfield" episode of the animated television show "The Simpsons". Ralph Wiggum is at the dentist and it is a foreboding scene. The lighting creates shadows as Ralph is asked by the dentist how often he brushes. Ralph lies and the dentist is not happy so he retrieves a huge book with a number of photos of really bad teeth inside.

As the dentist turns to a photo that resembles Prince Charles smiling with horribly misshapen teeth, Ralph begs him to stop. I love this play on the dentist who terrorizes his patient and the use of the stereotype of bad British teeth. My English mum might not think it's so funny.
8. Little Susie really sunk her teeth into this Christmas TV special that had an elf who wanted to be a dentist. What television special did we watch?

Answer: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

In this charming Christmas special, Rudolph decides to run away from the North Pole with fellow misfit, Hermey. Hermey is not happy with his elf duties and instead aspires to be a dentist. During their adventures they also team up with Cornelius the prospector and they come up against an angry Abominable Snowman. Cornelius knocks the Abominable Snowman out and Hermey uses his dental knowledge to remove his teeth, making it easier for the three friends to fight him.

The three do make it back to the North Pole where Hermey gets permission to open up a dentist office. Way to go Hermey the Elf, D.D.S.
9. This television show brought us the term anti-dentite and shared the truly awful joke "What do you call a doctor who fails out of med school?" "A dentist." Little Susie didn't get it but what show did she watch with me?

Answer: Seinfeld

The episode of Seinfeld named "Yada Yada" is hilarious. Jerry Seinfeld's dentist, played by Bryan Cranston, has converted to Judaism and Jerry thinks the only reason he's converted is so that he can tell Jewish jokes. Jerry is quite vocal about his disdain for this, leading his friend Kramer to hilariously call Jerry an "anti-dentite." Kramer tells Seinfeld that being an anti-dentite starts with slurs and jokes and will end with Seinfeld asking for them to go to their own schools. Jerry replies "They *do* have their own schools." The episode culminates with Jerry's girlfriend telling that joke at the expense of dentists and Jerry discovering she's an actual white supremacist.
10. I think I bit off more than I could chew trying to get Little Susie to the dentist so I'll just sit back and read. This book by Dave Eggers sounds like a Western rather than a book about a dentist. What's it called?

Answer: Heroes of the Frontier

"Heroes of the Frontier" is a 2016 novel about a woman named Josie who runs away to Alaska with her two children Ana and Paul. Josie has a failed relationship with Ana and Paul's father and she has lost her dental practice when she was sued by a former patient.

As her ex-husband asks to introduce the kids to his new fiancée , Josie takes off for Alaska with the kids in an old RV. The journey starts out as a vacation and gets more treacherous as they deal with the dangers of the wild and enemies trying to track them down.
