Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. WSOP 1980: Stu Ungar and Doyle Brunson, they were almost even in chips. Brunson raised with the Ah-7s and Ungar called with the 5s-4s. The flop came Ad 7d 2c giving Brunson top two pair and Ungar a gutshot straight draw. ($17,000 in pot) Ungar checked then what did Brunson do?

Answer: Bet pot ($17,000)

Brunson made a pot-sized bet of roughly $17,000 and then Ungar called. With the turn 3h, this gave Ungar the nuts and a 5-high straight. Ungar bet $30,000, Brunson moves all-in and Ungar calls. With only an ace or seven needed to survive, a 2d came on the river. Ungar won $375,000 in prize money.
2. WSOP 1997: Two-time World Champion Stu Ungar and John Strzemp were going heads-up into the final hand of the 1997 WSOP. Ungar held a 4-to-1 chip advantage. Ungar raised to $40,000 with the Ah-4c and Strzemp called with the As-8c. The flop came Ac-5d-3h, giving both players top pair but Strzemp with the better kicker although Ungar also had a gut-shot straight draw. What did Strzemp do?

Answer: Bet $120,000

Strzemp bet $120,000 on the flop and Ungar thought for a while before he moved all-in. Strzemp called all-in. The turn brought the 3d, giving Ungar 20 outs for a split pot and 7 outs to win. The 2s fell on the river, giving Ungar a 5-high straight, his third title and $1,000,000 in prize money.
3. WSOP 1999: Noel Furlong limped from the small blind with the 5c-5d and Goehring checked from the big blind holding the 6h-6c. The flop came Qs-Qc-5s. What did Furlong do with his full house?

Answer: Check

Both players checked. On the turn the 2s hit. Goehring checked again and Furlong bet $150,000. Goehring does a small-check raise to $300,000. Furlong moves all-in and Goehring realizes he only has 4 outs (Queen/Six). Furlong became the 1999 champ after the 8s hit the river.
4. WSOP 1997: There was still 4 players left on the final table when this happened. Ron Stanley limped from the small blind with the 9d-7d and Stu Ungar checked from the big blind with a Qs-Tc. The flop came As-6s-9h giving Stanley middle pair and nothing for Ungar. Both checked then the turn came 8c. Stanley an open-ended straight draw to go with his nines and Ungar now had a gut-shot straight draw and two overcards to Stanley's pair. Stanley bet $25,000, what did Ungar do.

Answer: Raise to $60,000

The Kd hit on the river, not helping either player but it was a scare card for Stanley since there were now two overcards on the board to his pair. With $200,000 in the pot, Stanley checked and Ungar bet $220,000. Stanley thought for a while before folding and Ungar showed the bluff.
5. WSOP 2003: Chris Moneymaker (Online qualifier from Pokerstars.com) had about $6,600,000 and Sammy Farha $1,800,000 in chips going into the final hand. Farha had Jh-Td who raised $100,000 and Moneymaker called with 5d-4s. The flop came Js-5s-4c giving Chris bottom 2-pair and Sammy with top pair and a 10 kicker. Moneymaker checked. What did Farha do?

Answer: Bet $175,000

Moneymaker check-raised $275,000 and Farha moved all-in. Moneymaker called. The two-pair held up and even improved on the river to a full house. This hand won Moneymaker the title and $2,500,000 in prize money.
6. WSOP 2001: Carlos Mortensen had a 2-to-1 chip lead when he and Dewey Tomko played the last hand of the tournament. Carlos raised $100,000 with KQ of clubs and Tomko called with pocket rockets. The flop came Jd-Tc-3c giving Mortensen two overcards, the nut straight-draw and a king-high flush draw (Was about 49% to win). Mortensen bet $100,000, so what did Tomko do?

Answer: Raise $400,000

Mortensen responded by moving all-in on a semi-bluff and Tomko called with his remaining $1,500,000. Mortensen was drawing to nine clubs, three nines and one ace giving him 13 outs in total. The 3d made no help to either player on the turn but the 9d hit the river meaning Carlos hit a straight which won him the title.
7. WSOP 1998: When playing heads-up, Kevin McBride raised $50,000 with the Qh-Th and Scotty Nguyen called with the Jd-9c. The flop came 8c-9d-9h giving Scotty three nines and McBride a straight draw. What did Scotty do?

Answer: Check

McBride bet $100,000 and Nguyen called. The turn was 8h giving Scotty the full house but Kevin had a straight flush draw. Scotty checked, McBride bets $100,000 again and Scotty calls. When the turn was 8s, there was a full house on the table but Nguyen had a higher full house. Scotty now bet $310,000 putting Kevin all-in if he calls. He called after a long thought.
8. WSOP 1990: With Hans Lund and Mansour Matloubi going heads-up for the title, Matloubi raised with pocket tens. Chip leader, Lund called with Ac-9d. The flop came 9s-2c-4d giving Lund top pair and Matloubi an over-pair. Lund checked. What did Matloubi do?

Answer: Bet $100,000

Lund check-raised $250,000 more. Matloubi studied for a while before he called the $250,000 and reraised all-in for another $378,000. Lund called and as an under-dog, it looked like the turning point of the tournament. However, the As hit the turn (being a miracle card for Lund), Matloubi was going out unless 1 of the 2 tens remaining in the deck came on the river.

The Ts hit the river, and with 80% of all chips in that pot Matloubi went on to become the 1990 WSOP champ.
9. WSOP 1987: Chan had picked up As-9c and raised $60,000. What did Henderson do with pocket fours.

Answer: Moved all-in

Chan called this all-in bet. This hand was basically a coinflip. The flop and turn was no help to either player but the 9h came on the river and Chan won the 1987 WSOP (he won the WSOP in '88 and came 2nd in '89).
10. WSOP 1985: When T.J. Cloutier and Bill Smith played heads-up, Smith was drunk and still won the tournament.

Answer: True

Smith raised with pocket three's and TJ moved all-in with Ad-3c and Smith called. TJ thought Smith was the tightest player in the world when sober and moved all-in thinking he'd steal the pot. The flop came 4c-5s-Th giving TJ six outs but no help came on the river or turn. This made Bill Smith the 1985 WSOP Champ.
