World Series of Poker Trivia Questions

1. Which player amazingly was able to make back to back final tables by becoming one of the 2014 November Nine after being a member of the 2013 November Nine?

From Quiz
2014 WSOP Main Event Final Table

Answer: Mark Newhouse

Mark Newhouse did what most people thought could not be done considering the field sizes of the main event now, he made back to back final tables. In 2013 the field was 6,352 players and in 2014 it was 6,683 players. In 2013, Newhouse was a short stack and as expected got knocked out in ninth place relatively early. When he registered for the 2014 main event (ME) he swore he would not finish 9th again but fate was not on his side. Even though he entered the final table third in chips, he was yet again knocked out in ninth place. The odds that Newhouse would make back to back final tables were 524,079 to 1. According to EPSN Poker, the odds of Newhouse getting struck by lightning in any two year period were better than what he did (480,000 to 1 according to the National Weather Service per ESPN). Newhouse is the first person to make back to back final tables in the modern era of poker (since the ME fields increased to over 1,000 players in 2004). The odds of Newhouse finishing ninth in consecutive years are an astronomical 42.5 million to 1, according to "Card Player Online". Newhouse won $730,725 in 2014 and $733,224 in 2013.

2. Which former Main Event champ was knocked out in tenth place to set the November Nine for 2013? (He goes by the nickname the Matador.)

From Quiz 2013 WSOP Main Event Final Table

Answer: Carlos Mortensen

Carlos Mortensen won the WSOP Main Event (ME) in 2001 for $1.5 million. He was the last pre-Moneymaker pro to win the ME prior to the Moneymaker Effect when thousands of amateur players began to play the event. Mortensen was short stacked when play was down to ten handed and ended up being knocked out in tenth place. Mortensen's deep run proved he still has what it takes to play with the best. Mortensen is the only player to have won both the WSOP ME and the WPT Championship has some of the best tournament results on a percentage basis of any pro. Robert Varkonyi won the 2002 ME for $2 million. Scotty Nguyen won the 1998 ME for $1 million. Doyle Brunson won back to back Main Events in 1976 and 1977 for $220,000 and $340,000. Both times Brunson won holding ten deuce when he won.

3. The first player knocked out when play resumed was one of only two players to have won a bracelet prior to the Main Event. He was also the oldest player at the table. Who finished ninth?

From Quiz 2012 WSOP Main Event Final Table

Answer: Steve Gee

Steve Gee was a 57 year-old professional player from California. He started the final table with 16,860,000 chips and fifth place overall. He was knocked out on Hand #30 of the final table when Russell Thomas called his all-in shove on the river. Gee held pocket eights and Thomas held pocket queens. The board improved neither player. In 2010, Gee outlasted 3,041 other players and won Event #13, a $1,000 buy-in No Limit Hold'em Tournament. That win earned him $472,479 and a WSOP bracelet. By making the October Nine Gee won $754,798.

4. For the first time in WSOP history parts of the Main Event were broadcast on a 30 minute delay and the final table was broadcast on a 15 minute delay. Who made the decision on what the delay would be and how it would be done?

From Quiz 2011 WSOP Main Event Final Table

Answer: Nevada Gaming Commission

The Nevada Gaming Commission was the final authority in how the 'live' broadcast would be conducted. The main concern of the commission was that the integrity of the game be maintained and that no player would gain an unfair advantage from the coverage. During the first eight days of the tournament in July there were two tables that were featured on a 30 minute delay. Coverage was switched between the tables every 30 minutes so no one table had more coverage than the other. No hole cards were shown unless the hand was played beyond the flop and only after the conclusion of the hand. In November, the final table was broadcast on a 15 minute delay with no hole cards being shown until the completion of the hand.

5. Hand Number Ten - In 2008, Peter Eastgate held Ad5s and Ivan Demidov held 4h2h. After the turn, the board read 2dKs3h4c. How many outs did Demidov have to win the hand?

From Quiz Top Ten WSOP ME Winning Hands

Answer: Four

In this hand Demidov was rather unlucky because the card that gave him two pair gave Eastgate a wheel. In heads up play two pair is a very strong hand. At this point Demidov's only hope is to fill up, get a full house, so he has four outs, either of the remaining 4's or 2's. The 7 of Spades fell on the river and Eastgate became the youngest player to win the Main Event. He has since been surpassed by Joe Cada as the youngest player to win.

6. Soi Nguyen holds AdKc and Jason Senti holds QdQs. The flop comes Qh3sTc. How many outs does Nguyen have? (An out is any card that will give the player the winning hand.)

From Quiz 2010 WSOP Main Event Final Table

Answer: Four

Senti flopped a set but Nguyen was not drawing dead. He still had a Broadway draw if he could catch any of the four Jacks in the deck. This would give him an Ace high straight and beat the set of Senti. Pre-flop the hand is what is considered a coin flip(50/50) but after the flop Nguyen was in big trouble with only about a 14% chance to win the hand. The turn was the 9s and the river was the meaningless Ks. Senti won the hand and knocked Nguyen out in ninth place, for which he won $811,823. Nguyen was the only true amateur at the final table this year. This was Hand #28 of the final table.

7. Coming into the final table, the chip leader with 58,930,00 chips was this logger from Maryland. What is his name?

From Quiz 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table

Answer: Darvin Moon

Darvin Moon won his chance to play in the Main Event in a $130 qualifier.
