Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!" was a famous quote from the 1995 movie "Braveheart". Which character made the statement in the film?

Answer: William Wallace

Mel Gibson directed and starred as Scottish warrior William Wallace in the epic film. Wallace had been one of the leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He helped defeat the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 but was later captured and put to death in 1305.

In "Braveheart", the bridge was missing in the "Battle of Stirling", along with several other historical inaccuracies, but the film was popular and picked up ten Academy Award nominations, winning half of them including Best Picture and Best Director.

There is no evidence that Wallace actually made the "freedom" quote, but it was inspirational in the film!
2. In which liberating song by Ariana Grande does the singer proclaim, "This is the part when I say I don't want ya, I'm stronger than I've been before"?

Answer: Break Free

Ariana Grande was dismissed by some as a flash in the pop music pan when she released her 2013 debut album "Yours Truly". However, her strong live performances and terrific vocal range (which has been compared to Mariah Carey) have meant that she's had great follow-up success, with her second album reaching the US number 1 spot. Ariana has also appeared in several television series, showing her comedic side in shows such as "Scream Queens" and "Saturday Night Live", where her impressions of other singers became a viral Internet hit.
3. In which 2011 mind and physics-bending video game sequel does the protagonist finally gain her freedom and exit the subterranean Aperture Science testing facility, having been let go by a sudden and rare gesture of compassion from the facility's AI overseer?

Answer: Portal 2

The events of the first game, "Portal", originally ended with the protagonist, Chell, being ejected from the facility after destroying the sinister and dangerous AI called GLaDOS and, presumably, dying moments after seeing the outside world. However, the game was later retconned to alter the ending, with Chell's unconscious body being dragged back into the remains of the facility by an unseen, robotic-sounding figure.

"Portal 2" picks up events many, many years afterwards, with Aperture Science crumbling and overrun by Mother Nature. Chell reawakens from her stasis and is guided through the remains of the facility by a newfound ally called Wheatley, a sentient "personality core". Chell eventually comes across what is left of GLaDOS and, as a result of following Wheatley's advice, reactivates the AI and once again begins making her way through a series of testing chambers designed by GLaDOS. Wheatley hatches a plan to usurp GLaDOS and restore order to Aperture Science, but ends up becoming mad with power when he gains control of the facility. The game then shifts to Chell and GLaDOS (the latter reduced to a potato battery) trying to uninstall Wheatley and stop him from destroying them both. When Chell is successful and GLaDOS is reinstated, a temporary bout of compassion from the AI sees her releasing Chell, when she realises that she's just too difficult to kill.

"Portal 2" was the much-anticipated follow-up to the surprise 2007 hit, which originally came bundled with a few other games as part of developer Valve's "Orange Box". The game stellar voice cast (featuring Ellen McLain, JK Simmons and Stephen Merchant) and its humorous script, coupled with its dizzying array of puzzles and challenges, garnered high praise across the industry.
4. Freedom to do freestyle! Which thunderous British artist, known for the songs "Big for Your Boots" and "One Take Freestyle", created the first grime album to top the U.K. album charts?

Answer: Stormzy

Born Michael Omari, Stormzy is a London rapper/grime artist who gained huge popularity from a freestyle video uploaded onto YouTube called "Shut Up" in 2015. After being rather silent for a year, Stormzy released his debut album, "Gang Signs & Prayer" in early 2017.

In March that year, it became the first grime album to top the U.K. charts. The musical genre "grime" was developed in the early 2000s in East London and mixed electronic music with hip hop, reggae, and dancehall, as well as other influences.
5. Which South African anti-apartheid activist was the focus of both the 1987 film "Cry Freedom" and a 1980 song by Peter Gabriel?

Answer: Stephen Biko

Biko (1946-1977) was a medical student who turned to activism to press for the overturn of the apartheid system in South Africa. In the early 1970s, he was banned from speaking in public or contacting the media, but he continued to do so, and in 1977, he died while in police custody.

The lyrics of Gabriel's 1980 song "Biko" said of his death: "You can blow out a candle, but you can't blow out a fire". The 1987 film "Cry Freedom" focused on the relationship between Biko (Denzel Washington) and journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline), who worked to expose police culpability in Biko's death while facing threats against his own life.
6. The Freedom Flyer, a suspended family roller coaster, opened in 2013 at the Fun Spot America amusement park located in which Florida city, known for some other famous fun spots?

Answer: Orlando

The Fun Spot America amusement park competes with other Orlando attractions such as Disney World and Universal Studios. Suspended family roller coasters are steel inverted coasters where the train runs underneath the track. This type of coaster first debuted back in 2001 at Ohio's Kings Island and Canada's Wonderland. Virtual reality (VR) was added to the Freedom Flyer coaster in 2016 with passengers wearing a VR headset to add to the experience.
7. The now iconic song "Now We Are Free" by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is part of which 2000 film soundtrack?

Answer: Gladiator

All of the films listed here include compositions by the prolific Hans Zimmer. "Now We Are Free" is from the 2000 film "Gladiator" and is arguably a less typical example of Zimmer's music, largely because it features vocals. The soothing vocals were performed by the Australian musician Lisa Gerrard, who is known for her use of idioglossic language (language that is developed and spoken by only one person or a small group of people).
8. Nothing says freedom to Americans like the Fourth of July. 'Born on the Fourth of July', which earned Tom Cruise his first Academy Award nomination, was directed by whom?

Answer: Oliver Stone

Cruise would receive other Academy Award nominations including a Best Actor nomination in 1997 for his role in "Jerry Maguire" and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for "Magnolia" (2000). In "Born on the Fourth of July", Cruise plays Ron Kovic, a marine in the Vietnam war who has to return home after becoming paralyzed from the waist down.

Although some felt "Born on the Fourth of July" lacked the grittiness of "Platoon" (another war film directed by Stone), the film was met with almost universal good reviews, and Stone received the Best Director Oscar for his work on the film.
9. Who or what was featured in the sultry video for George Michael's song "Freedom '90"?

Answer: Supermodels

The song came from Michael's 1990 album "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. I" and was the second or third single released, depending on the country. The song had the "'90" added to the title because Michael's group Wham! had a hit song called "Freedom" in 1984.

In the smoldering video for "Freedom '90", supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Tatjana Patitz lip-synched the song while dancing, strutting, bathing, and looking sultry. The models reportedly received $15k a day for the video shoot.
10. In the Disney film "Aladdin", Aladdin used his third wish to grant the Genie his freedom. Who voiced the character of the Genie?

Answer: Robin Williams

The Genie expected Aladdin to use his third wish to become a real prince so that he could marry Princess Jasmine, but Aladdin instead gave the Genie his freedom. The part of the Genie was specifically written for Robin Williams, and he performed it so well that Disney campaigned to have him considered for a Best Actor Academy Award nomination. That didn't happen, but Williams did pick up a "Special Achievement Award" Golden Globe for his work on the film.
