Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Singer Courtney Love found fame both as the front woman of her band Hole and as the widow of Kurt Cobain. What was her birth name?

Answer: Courtney Michelle Harrison

Born in 1964, Courtney Love has been in the public eye for many years.
As well as her own bands, Sugar Babylon and Hole, she has been associated with various other rock acts including Faith No More.
She married Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain in 1994, and is the mother of his child Frances Bean.
2. The authors Lawrence O'Donnell and Lewis Padgett were in fact the same person - well people! Which married couple used these pseudonyms to publish their joint work?

Answer: Catherine Lucille Moore and Henry Kuttner

Catherine originally published her work under the name C.L. Moore, and it was years before it became common knowledge that "he" was in fact a "she". She was remarkable in the genre of Science Fiction, which was, in its early years, considered a boys' genre and somehow unsuitable for the fairer sex!
She met her husband Henry Kuttner after he sent C.L. Moore a fan letter while under the impression she was a man, and their collaborations included the basis for the 1992 film "Timescape".
3. This actress, who appeared in the 1988 film "Dangerous Liaisons", was given a name which means "splendour and light", and a middle name, Karuna, which means "compassion" in Sanskrit. She then named her daughter Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence, where Arusha means "bright" in Sanskrit. Who is she?

Answer: Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman has been nominated for both Razzie and Oscar Awards, but as of 2017 has not won either one.
She has however won both a Golden Globe and a MTV Movie Award.
Perhaps her most well known film role was in "Kill Bill" (2003) where she played the character of "the deadliest woman in the world". Her character's actual name was not revealed until the 2004 sequel "Kill Bill: Volume2".
4. Which (sometimes controversial) singer, named as the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2015 by PETA, was born with the forenames Destiny Hope?

Answer: Miley Ray Cyrus

The Goddaughter of country singer Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus began her showbiz career with the Disney Channel playing teen idol Hannah Montana from 2006 - 2011.
She was named Destiny Hope after being born with a congenital heart defect. Her parents wanted to express how they felt when she survived and thrived after a rocky beginning to life.
Her adult career has been more controversial as she has become (in)famous for her sexualised music videos and live performances.
5. This actor has received an Academy Award and a BAFTA for Best Actor, among other awards, and was also given a knighthood of which he's very proud. Which Yorkshireman was born with the name of Krishna Bhanji?

Answer: Ben Kingsley

Kingsley's father, Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji, was of Gujarati descent and was born in Kenya whilst his mother was British.
He came up with his stage name in the late 1970s using his father's college nickname of Ben.
Kingsley is probably best known for his portrayal of the title role in the 1982 film "Gandhi", for which he received an Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe. He has also received accolades for his work in films such as "Schindler's List" (1993), "Sexy Beast" (2000), and "House of Sand and Fog" (2003).
He was knighted in 2002.
6. This British singer had a smash hit debut album in 1999 that topped the charts in several countries, and her career was further helped along when Eminem sampled one of her songs in his song "Stan". We can't blame her for shortening her mouthful of a birth name. Which singer was born Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong?

Answer: Dido

Dido received her nickname as a child, and she uses it as her real name, not just a stage name.
She apparently didn't like either her real name or her nickname, and thought that it was cruel of her parents to burden her with such a mouthful!
Her 1999 album "No Angel" hit number one in the U.K., Australia, France and Ireland, among other countries, and featured the hit song "Thank You" (used by Eminem in his hit "Stan" (2000).
Her 2003 follow-up album "Life for Rent" was equally successful and featured the hit song "White Flag".
7. Which actor son of a famous actor father has the impressive list of middle names William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus?

Answer: Kiefer Sutherland

Multi award winning actor Kiefer is, of course, the son of Donald Sutherland.
My personal favourite role of his was David in the 1987 vampire movie "The Lost Boys".
8. Although not an odd name in itself, "Howard Allen O'Brien" is rather a strange thing to name one's daughter. Which famous female was named this when she was born?

Answer: Anne Rice

Probably Anne Rice's most famous books are the "Vampire Chronicles" series, which includes "Interview with the Vampire", made into a film in 1994, and "Queen of the Damned", filmed in 2002.
She also published fiction under the pseudonyms Anne Rampling and A.N. Roquelaure.
9. This celebrity is mainly known as a musician, but he has also been an actor and a baseball player, and for a brief time, he was known as Chris Gaines. Which singer's real name is Troyal?

Answer: Garth Brooks

Troyal Garth Brooks was named after his father, Troyal Raymond Brooks, Jr. Garth Brooks had success with his eponymous album in 1989, but it was his 1990 second album, "No Fences" that made him a star. He released hit albums throughout the 1990s and also released an album as a rock star alter ego, Chris Gaines. Along the way, he did a some acting (mainly portraying himself), and also played some baseball.
10. This magician is famously silent during his act with his partner. He has legally changed his name from Raymond Joseph (surname) to just one word. His published works (with his stage partner) include "How to Play With Your Food" and "How to Play in Traffic"; who is he?

Answer: Teller

Teller is, of course, one half of Penn and Teller.
He was originally a high school teacher (of English and Latin) before finding fame as an illusionist, comedian, and writer.
"Penn and Teller's How to Play with Your Food" was published in 1992, and "Penn and Teller's "How to Play in Traffic" followed in 1997.
