Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1960s model sported a blonde, short, boy-like hairstyle that became forever associated with her?

Answer: Twiggy

Twiggy was born as Lesley Hornby in London. She took part in a photoshoot for a new hairstyle created in 1966 by the celebrity stylist, Leonard. A fashion journalist spotted a photo hung in the hairstylist's salon and the rest as they say, is history. Her very thin build gave rise to her modelling name.

2. The 1980s comic series "Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters" was a parody of what popular series featuring "heroes in a half-shell"?

Answer: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The series started in 1986 and was a spoof of the much more well-known "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Instead of being named after four great artists, like the turtles, the hamsters were named after action stars: Jackie (Chan), Bruce (Lee), Chuck (Norris), and Clint (Eastwood).

Other parodies of TMNT include the "Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung Fu Kangaroos" and the "Adult Thermonuclear Samurai Elephants".

3. What city is the common setting of the Broadway Musicals "West Side Story", "In the Heights" and "Rent"?

Answer: New York City

"West Side Story" and "In the Heights" were written more than fifty years apart, but both focus on New York City's immigrant population. In "West Side Story" the established Italian immigrant population comes into conflict with the newly arrived Puerto Ricans. 7. Wellington and Jodhpur are cities in New Zealand and India, respectively. Both of them also share their name with what kind of clothing?

Answer: Boots

Wellington boots (also known as Wellingtons, Wellies, gumboots, muckboots, etc) were named after the 1st Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, who was famous for wearing them. They are usually long, almost reaching the knee. Modern varieties are typically made from rubber or PVC, and are commonly used for walking on boggy ground or in wet areas. Jodhpur boots (also known as paddock boots) are short riding boots, traditionally designed with a strap and buckle that helped fasten the boot around the ankle.

They were originally intended to be worn with Jodhpur trousers, which typically reach down to the ankle. Both the boots and the trousers were named after the Jodhpur District in the state of Rajasthan, India.

8. "Buckets of lava!" "Never dig down!" "Oh, ok, Pigmen!" These "splash texts," - and hundreds more - can be found in the opening moments of this very popular video game. Can you dig down into your memory and recall the game?

Answer: Minecraft

"Minecraft" was released in 2011 and purchased by Microsoft for 2.5 BILLION dollars in 2014. In 2018, the game was listed as the second-highest selling video game of all time. The splashes in the question refer to some "Minecraft" dangers: molten rock, yawning chasms, monsters.

Other openers may be as classic as Descartes' "Cogito ergo sum," or as cryptic as "Pumpkinhead!" indicating that vegetable can be worn as a helmet in the game.

9. In the "Super Mario" video games, Princess Peach is princess of what?

Answer: Mushroom Kingdom

Princess Peach, who was early on in her debut called Princess Toadstool, is the princess of Mushroom Kingdom. Naturally, mushrooms play an important role in the kingdom with Mario able to take advantage of super powers some mushrooms may give him. In addition, the Toads, servants of such to the princess, all resemble mushrooms in appearance.

10. Clark Kent is NEVER late for work at the Daily Planet, but Superman has been tardy on numerous occasions. What modern convenience is likely to have taken a toll on his timeliness?

Answer: cell/smart phones

Clark Kent chose to disguise his super powers, by wearing "civilian" clothes. When it was time to become a superhero, he frequently used a phone booth in order to don his Superman costume. Alas, the advent of the "mobile phone" resulted in a headlong elimination of booths. Clark was left hanging in mid-air....well, maybe the closet.

The first phone booths appeared in the late 1800s. Superman - the creation of J. Siegel and J. Shuster - made his debut in June 1938, in Action Comics. Mobile phones (the now ubiquitous cell/smart phones) appeared in the early 1970s. I'm proud to say that I've never owned any of those phones. And by Great Caesar's ghost, I never will!
