Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rod Hull
Answer: Emu
"Rod Hull and Emu" was a regular segment of "The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show" in 1974. Rod was killed after falling from his roof while adjusting his TV antennae. Emu gave up show business at that time.
2. Rickie Layne
Answer: Velvel
I never cared much for these guys... but Ed Sullivan apparently like them. They appeared on Ed's popular variety show 38 times. I don't know what kind of name "Velvel" is.
3. Willie Tyler
Answer: Lester
Willie was a regular cast member during the sixth (and final) season of "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In." He also had a small part in the Oscar nominated film "Coming Home." Lester hasn't done any solo appearances and prefers performing in a team format.
4. Senor Wences
Answer: Johnny
With his early bullfighting career turning out less than successful, Wenceslao Moreno switched to a life in vaudeville as a juggler and ventriloquist. Senor Wences and Johnny appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" 48 times.
5. Robert Smigel
Answer: Triumph - The Insult Comic Dog
During a "Conan O'Brien" on location appearance in Canada, Triumph "interviewed" a number of residents. Triumph's interviews and comments were so insulting to Canada, and Quebec in particular, that the entire show was asked to leave Canada.
6. Jimmy Nelson
Answer: Farfel
Jimmy and his dog Farfel were best known for their Nestles chocolate TV commercials. The ironic thing about this is that chocolate contains the chemicals caffeine and theobromine... both of which are toxic to dogs and can result in illness and even death.
7. Jeff Dunham
Answer: Walter
Dunham claims the creation of the cantankerous Walter was inspired by a Bette Davis appearance on "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson." Contrary to popular belief, Dunham has never appeared on the "America's Got Talent" show.
8. Burr Tillstrom
Answer: Oliver J. Dragon
Oliver was the co-star of "Kukla, Fran and Ollie." The main premise of the show (which ran on-and-off from 1947 thru 1970) was that the theater troupe "The Kuklapolitan Players" was preparing to put on a show. This was years before anyone had heard of the Muppets.
9. Paul WInchell
Answer: Jerry Mahoney
Winchell sued Metromedia Inc. for destroying all the tapes of his 1960s children's shows; in 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court awarded him $17.8 million.
10. Shari Lewis
Answer: Lambchop
In 1960, Shari was given her own Saturday morning children's show; it ran for three years. Unfortunately, in 1964 all of the shows were taped over by the network and no longer exist.
