Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After surviving a plutonium bomb blast, Lt. Col. Glenn Manning went through some changes. What was he called in the title of the 1957 movie thriller?

Answer: The Amazing Colossal Man

After his amazing recovery from the blast, Glenn Manning kept growing. As he grew (over 50 feet) he began to lose his mind and went on a rampage. In 1958 this low budget film had a sequel "War of the Colossal Beast". Glenn Langan, who played Manning in the original film, did not appear in the sequel.
2. The film was "20 Million Miles to Earth". In 1957 a U.S. spacecraft crashed off the coast of Sicily. This lead to the release of a fast-growing lizard-like creature that terrorized Rome. Where was this ill-fated spacecraft returning from?

Answer: Venus

This exciting film starred William Hopper as a survivor of the crash. He went on to greater fame as Paul Drake in the TV series "Perry Mason". Ray Harryhausen did the special effects and was the reason for the Rome locale; Ray wanted to go there on vacation. Venus never gets closer to Earth than 24.7 million miles.
3. You could say "she had a crush on him", but actually it was only his head and arm. What 1958 horror film begins with the main character being crushed in a mechanical press?

Answer: The Fly

In "The Fly", scientist Andre Delambre (David Hedison) has an unfortunate accident while conducting an experiment. To hide the horrible consequences his wife destroys the evidence... and him. The ending "Help me. Please, help meeee..." is the stuff of which nightmares are made.
4. "It Came From Beneath the Sea" was the title of this 1955 film. What famous landmark does the monster manage to wrap it's arms around?

Answer: The Golden Gate Bridge

A giant octopus (the result of nuclear testing in the Philippine trench) attacks San Francisco. There is a romance between Kenneth Tobey and Faith Domergue, but Ray Harryhausen's outstanding special effects make the movie.
5. In this 1958 film, Alan Brooks (played by Forest Tucker) is called upon to investigate a mysterious cloud on the side of a mountain. What did he find in that cloud?

Answer: The Crawling Eye

This film was originally titled "The Trollenberg Terror", after the name of the mountain. The "crawling eyes" have a nasty habit of using their tentacles to tear people's heads off. Bad crawling eyes! Bad! Bad!
6. In the Arizona desert a scientist worked on an experiment to solve world hunger. Then things went wrong. Luckily for us it was all captured in this 1955 sci-fi film classic. What film was it?

Answer: Tarantula

It was Professor Deemer, as portrayed by Leo G. Carroll, whose experiment went awry. The gigantic spider was unstoppable... until Clint Eastwood showed up. Some "less than terrific" special effects, but this is still worth watching.
7. In this 1959 film Jane Marvin (Beverly Garland) is searching for her long lost husband in the swamps of Louisiana. Then she comes across what horrible sight?

Answer: The Alligator People

Lon Chaney Jr. and Bruce Bennett costar. The "alligator people" were more laughable than scary. Beverly Garland had a busy career with hundreds of movies and television shows including long runs on "My Three Sons", "Scarecrow and Mrs. King", and her own series "Decoy".
8. Marshall Thompson starred in this 1958 film as Major Jeff Cummings. Cummings is investigating the deaths of several people who've had their brains sucked out! Yikes! What was the name of this movie?

Answer: Fiend Without A Face

For most of this film the monsters (a product of misused atomic energy) are invisible. When seen, not only do these "fiends" not have faces... they don't even have bodies. The film slowly moves along until the last frantic 15 minutes or so when we get brains with spinal columns flying around attacking people.
9. He was in a number of John Wayne classic films... but monster fans know him better for his roles in "Attack of the Puppet People", Invisible Invaders" and "Tarantula". Who was this guy?

Answer: John Agar

In addition to the films named above, John also appeared in "The Mole People", "Revenge of the Creature", "The Brain From Planet Arous" and dozens of films and TV shows. His first role was a small part in the John Wayne classic "Fort Apache".
10. These "monsters" in this 1956 scare-fest were created by a scientist seeking a cure for his wife's brain tumor. Stars of this film included Basil Rathbone, Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson and Lon Chaney, Jr. Humphrey Bogart was not in it. What was the name of this film?

Answer: The Black Sleep

The "black sleep" refers to an East Indian drug which causes a deathlike state of anesthesia. Humphrey Bogart starred in the 1946 film "The BIG Sleep". "The Big Sleep" was good... but Bogart was no Tor Johnson!
