Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Old Mongoose
Answer: Archie Moore
With a boxing career that lasted 28 years, Archie's nickname of "The Mongoose" eventually became "The Old Mongoose." Along the way Archie won the Light Heavyweight Championship when he defeated Joey Maxim in 1952. Archie twice attempted to win the Heavyweight title.
In 1955 he was knocked out by champion Rocky Marciano. Then, in 1956, he was knocked out by Floyd Patterson in a fight to fill the Championship left vacant when Marciano retired. Archie won 183 fights and lost only 23.
2. The Easton Assassin
Answer: Larry Holmes
One of 12 children, Larry Holmes was raised in Easton, Pennsylvania. On June 9, 1978 Larry defeated Ken Norton to win the WBC version of the Heavyweight Championship. Larry went on to defend his title 19 times, taking on top fighters such as Earnie Shaver, Mike Weaver, "Bonecrusher" Smith, and Muhammad Ali (1973-2002).
3. Hands of Stone
Answer: Roberto Duran
In a career that spanned 34 years (1968-2001), Roberto Duran (b. 1958) compiled a record of 103 wins and only 16 losses. Seventy of those wins were by knock-out... which could explain the "Hands of Stone" nickname. During his career Roberto won the championship in four weight divisions and fought many of the top fighters of the day including Esteban de Jesus, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, and Davey Moore.
4. The Cinderella Man
Answer: James J. Braddock
Taking on journeyman fighter James J. Braddock looked like an easy payday for Heavyweight Champion Max Baer. However, on June 13, 1935, Braddock managed to win a unanimous decision and became champion. Underdog Braddock winning the title was compared to a fairytale... thus he was dubbed "The Cinderella Man."
5. Two Ton
Answer: Tony Galento
Not much on finesse... Tony was a rough, tough, dirty-fighting brawler. His most famous fight was in 1939 when he fought Joe Louis for the Heavyweight Championship. He knocked Joe down in the third round... but Joe knocked him out in the fourth. In 1943, future wrestling star Fred Blassie took on Tony in his boxing debut.
The fight (and Freddie's boxing career) ended with Tony knocking him out in the second round.
6. Gentleman Jim
Answer: James Corbett
In 1892 Corbett won the Heavyweight Championship by handing John L. Sullivan the only defeat of his career; he knocked Sullivan out in the 21st round. Corbett was NOT a "fighting champion." On March 17, 1897, in only his second title defense in five years, he lost the championship when he was knocked out in the 14th round by Bob Fitzsimmons.
7. The Onion Farmer
Answer: Carmen Basilio
Carmen Basilio won both the Welterweight (1955) and the Middleweight Championships (1957). His victory over Sugar Ray Robinson for the Middleweight title was named Ring Magazine's "Fight of the Year." He got his nickname because his father was an onion farmer and, while growing up, Carmen had to work in the fields with him.
He gave himself the nickname to honor his father and all who worked in menial low-paying jobs.
8. Hit Man
Answer: Tommy Hearns
Tommy was also known as "The Motor City Cobra" in deference to his longtime hometown of Detroit. Tommy won titles in FIVE weight divisions and fought many of the top fighters of the day including Roberto Duran, Iran Barkley, Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfred Benitez and Marvin Hagler (1977 to 2006).
9. The Ambling Alp
Answer: Primo Carnera
Primo Carnera became the World Heavyweight Champion on June 29, 1933 when he knocked out Jack Sharkey in the sixth round. Primo got his nickname because, at 6 ft 6 in (1.98m) , and weighing over 250 lbs. (113kg), he towered over his opponents. When Carnera's boxing career was over he became a highly successful professional wrestler.
10. The Real Deal
Answer: Evander Holyfield
In his 17-year boxing career Holyfield won the Heavyweight Championship four times. He fought the best fighters of his time including George Foreman, Riddick Bowe, Larry Holmes, and Mike Tyson. Prior to winning the Heavyweight title, Holyfield defeated Dwight Muhammad Qawi by split decision in July, 1986 to become Cruiserweight Champion.
He went on to defeat the other claimants to the title (Ricky Parkey and Carlos De Leon) and became undisputed champion.
