Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hagar's youngest son
Answer: Hamlet
Hamlet shows no signs of wishing to follow in his father's fighting and pillaging footsteps. He is an avid student, happier reading a book than learning Viking skills, much to his father's chagrin. Hamlet's sights are set on following a career in dentistry.
2. Fiancé of Hagar's daughter
Answer: Lute
Lute, named for the instrument he tries to play, believes himself to be a talented musician. In reality, he is shown as being unable to hold a tune or play any instruments. Lute has been engaged to Honi, Hagar's daughter, for years although she shows no signs of wishing to go ahead with the marriage.
3. A torturer
Answer: Mr Giggles
Although Mr Giggles might seem an unusual name for a torturer, the name reflects his methodology, which consists of tickling his victims until they beg for mercy. He should not be confused with 'Dr Giggles', the 1992 horror film.
4. Hagar's long suffering wife
Answer: Helga
Helga is shown as a well-built woman with long, blonde braids and often wearing a horned helmet. She has her hands full dealing with the childlike Hagar, who needs reminding about his personal hygiene, such as his annual bath.
5. The family's dog
Answer: Snert
Snert is drawn wearing a Viking helmet, and barks with a Scandinavian accent, as 'voof' rather than the English version of 'woof'. Snert understands the orders he is given, but prefers not to follow them. In true cartoon fashion, Snert's thoughts appear in a speech bubble.
6. Anglo-Saxon rival to Hagar
Answer: Dirty Dirk
Dirty Dirk is drawn as a heavily bearded man wearing filthy clothes and sometimes accompanied by his equally grubby dog. At various times, Dirk is depicted as a member of Hagar's crew and at others as his enemy. It's been indicated that the description of 'dirty' doesn't (just) describe his appearance but his fighting tactics.
7. Hagar's best friend
Answer: Lucky Eddie
The antithesis of the traditional Viking, Lucky Eddie is weak and ineffectual, although he is educated enough to be able to read and speak other languages. He was rescued by Hagar from the Romans, who had captured him in Ireland, and given him the name of Fortuitous Eduardo.
8. Girl in love with Hagar's son
Answer: Hernia
Poor Hernia expends a lot of time on trying to persuade Hamlet to return her affections, but seems destined to suffer unrequited love until the series ends. Her efforts have included turning her skipping rope into a lasso to capture Hamlet, and she never misses an opportunity to bring marriage into her conversations with him.
9. The family's duck
Answer: Kvack
Kvack acts as Helga's spy, keeping a beady eye on Hagar and reporting his misdemeanours to Helga. Naturally, Hagar hates Kvack but struggles to outwit her. The name comes from the duck's German accent, which means that she says 'kvack' instead of 'quack'. Several strips depict Hagar trying to teach Kvack to quack properly, to no avail.
10. Hagar's daughter
Answer: Honi
In contrast to her academic brother, Honi is a warlike maiden, drawn by the artist as dressed in chainmail and brandishing a spear. She is the only character who can tolerate Lute's songs and has little interest in traditionally feminine activities.
