Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Magic Kingdom: What are the two columns on either side of the front door intentionally shaped like?

Answer: Coffins

A wonderfully macabre little touch. Another exterior detail of note is that a light can sometimes be seen moving through the windows of the mansion at night.
2. All Mansions: Finish this sentence from the Ghost Host's narration: "Every room has wall to wall creeps, and hot and cold running ______."

Answer: chills

Just one of the many amenities that makes the Haunted Mansion so delightfully unlivable.
3. Magic Kingdom: Which one of the following objects is not in the Mansion's attic?

Answer: A revolver

There are many interesting items in the attic besides the harp, baby carriage, and the battered dressing dummy. There are also paintings, a tapestry, swords, trunks of all sizes, various books, and even a wedding dress. No firearms, however.
4. All Mansions: What is the name of the "broken" member of the singing busts in the graveyard?

Answer: Uncle Theodore

Uncle Theodore is played by the immortal Thurl Ravenscroft. Thurl's powerful voice is in abundant supply all over the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom parks. Besides the Mansion he can also be heard in Pirates of the Caribbean, It's A Small World, and the Country Bear Jamboree to name just a few.
5. Magic Kingdom: Which infamous pirate's tomb is located in the crypt area just outside the exit of the attraction?

Answer: Bluebeard

Bluebeard is a fairy tale character famous for his many wives and their gruesome fates. Well, except for his last wife. But you'll have to read the story yourself to find out more.
6. Disneyland: What room does the raven appear in at the Disneyland Haunted Mansion that he does not also appear in at the Magic Kingdom?

Answer: Grand Ballroom

Just one of the many minor details that varies between Mansions.
7. Disneyland: New Orleans Square was not always intended to be the area where the Haunted Mansion was to be placed. Where was the Haunted Mansion originally supposed to be located?

Answer: Main Street USA

Fantasyland is the home of the Haunted Mansion at Tokyo Disneyland. At Disneyland Paris, the Haunted Mansion (there it has been altered quite a bit and renamed Phantom Manor), graces Frontierland.
8. Disneyland: What exactly was the fabled and often discussed Hatbox Ghost?

Answer: An animatronic ghost character in the attic that was later removed

The Hatbox Ghost was located where the Bride is now. The Bride was in a different part of the attic than she is now. With every beat of her heart, the Hatbox Ghost's head would disappear from his shoulders and then reappear in the hatbox he was carrying.

The effect did not work as well as hoped and was eventually removed from the Mansion very early on. The bride then was relocated to where he stood.
9. Disneyland: In the Corridor of Doors there is a picture of a man with a noose around his neck. What is he holding in his right hand?

Answer: A hatchet

It is claimed that the picture is a depiction of none other than the Ghost Host himself.
10. All Mansions: What is the grandfather clock in the Corridor of Doors shaped like?

Answer: A demon

A hideous demon head with a mouth full of fangs surrounds the clock face as if to eat it. The pendulum of the clock is shaped like his tail. There is a monster claw shadow that sweeps over the clock.
11. Magic Kingdom: What shape is "imprinted" in the cement near the end of the exit walkway outside?

Answer: Wedding ring

Perhaps it belonged to the bride? In actuality this is the remains of a pole that used to stand on that spot. When it came time to removed it someone tried to use a screwdriver to pry it out of the ground. This did not entirely work. The screwdriver broke off as did bits of the bottom of the pole. This together unintentionally formed the remarkable likeness of a wedding ring.
12. All Mansions: How is the Endless Hallway effect done?

Answer: Via the placement of a mirror

A mirror is situated behind the floating candelabra. The mirror reflects the candelabra and the room, giving it an "endless" look.
13. All Mansions: Finish this lyric from the Haunted Mansions theme song "Grim Grinning Ghosts": "When the crypt doors creak and the tombstones _____..."

Answer: quake

"Spooks come out for a swinging wake." The music of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" was composed by Buddy Baker.
14. Magic Kingdom: What Disney character's face is on the backrest of several chairs in the Mansion?

Answer: Donald Duck

Nope, this is not one of the parks famous "Hidden Mickeys." The Donald face is a bit abstract, but it's there.
15. All Mansions: Which of the following is sticking out from underneath the Grand Ballroom table?

Answer: Ghostly feet

Apparently some alcohol loving ghoul got a little too carried away with the mansions stock of "spirits". At Disneyland, you can see the actual liquid contents spilling out of the bottle next to the feet, but for some reason at the Magic Kingdom this detail is absent and only the empty bottle can be spotted.
16. Disneyland: In a 1969 episode of the "Walt Disney Presents" television show; footage from the construction of the Mansion was shown. Who narrated this fascinating behind the scenes look?

Answer: Kurt Russell

Kurt was an active contract member of the Disney studios at the time. The episode mentioned is sometimes shown on the Disney Channel.
17. Disneyland: Which one of these was an actual abandoned idea for one of the morphing portraits hanging in the hallway before the "Doombuggy" (your ride vehicles official name) loading area?

Answer: A man turning into a vegetable

Freaky idea, isn't it? Some other morphing painting ideas that were developed but later abandoned include a wife standing behind her husband who suddenly starts to strangle him, a portrait of Raspution who eyes become bigger and bigger until they file the whole picture and a plate of fresh fruit that morphs into a plate of rotten fruit.
18. Magic Kingdom: According to rumor, which of the following used to be trapped in one of the Grand Staircase spiderwebs?

Answer: A man

The rumor also states that the trapped man was removed because it made the scene too scary for kids. The rumor as a whole has been denied by some.
19. Magic Kingdom: Which one of the following mythological creatures does not appear in any form in the Mansion?

Answer: Werewolf

The handles of some of the doors in the Mansion are shaped like dragons, a unicorn is depicted on a tapestry hanging behind the Bride in the attic, and the candelabras at the bottom of the staircases are carved into the likenesses of hippogriffs. There is a howling wolf in the graveyard, but he is of the normal four legged kind.
20. All Mansions: What is the name of the actor who portrays the Ghost Host?

Answer: Paul Frees

Mr. Frees also did the voice for Ludwig Von Drake among other things.
21. Magic Kingdom: There are security cameras in the Haunted Mansion.

Answer: False

There are no cameras. Sensitive black pressure mats have been placed throughout the attraction. If someone leaves their ride vehicle they will step on one. This triggers an alarm.
22. All Mansions: When is the only time you actually hear the term "Doombuggies" used to describe your ride vehicles inside the actual attraction itself?

Answer: If the ride stops

If the ride is halted for any reason, a safety spiel is played which tells you to stay in your "Doombuggies" because "playful spooks" have interrupted the tour.
23. Disneyland: Which one of the following personage(s) was planned to narrate the Mansion at one time during its evolution?

Answer: Madame Leota

At one point narration done by Eleanor Audley, the voice of Madame Leota, was recorded to be used as your tour guide. The recording sessions were rather lackluster, and the idea was scrapped.
24. All Mansions: What is supposedly an unusual feature about the recorded music used for the flutist member of the band playing in the graveyard?

Answer: It was played backward by the real life musician, but is played normally (forward) in the attraction itself

It makes for an eerie and otherworldly sound. There is some debate if the music in use now is the backward recording, however.
25. All Mansions: And finally, what is holding the torches hanging from the wall as you leave your Doombuggy at the conclusion of the attraction?

Answer: Skeletal hands

The skeletal hands originally appeared in a concept drawing for the "Museum of the Weird", a proposed building you would be able to visit after you finished riding the Haunted Mansion. It was to have been filled with all sorts of bizarre artifacts and bizarre props all designed by the Disney Imagineers. But like Edison Square this never materialized. However, some of the Museums ideas like the skeletal torch bearing hands found a home in the Haunted Mansion.
Our tour has come to and. Thank you for playing. And remember: beware of hitchhiking ghosts!
