Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the original Haunted Mansion open?

Answer: 1969

Disneyland opened in 1955. The Haunted Mansion was scheduled to open with it, but at the time, it was like an empty shell; it had the outside, but not the inside. The opening was constantly delayed until August 9, 1969, eighteen years later, when the Haunted Mansion was finally finished.
2. What was the name of the first man Walt Disney hired to write the Haunted Mansion's story?

Answer: Ken Anderson

Everyone here had worked on the Haunted Mansion, but Ken Anderson was the only one who didn't stay until the ride was finished. Ken Anderson had developed four or five different stories for The Haunted Mansion, but after the New York World Fair 1964-1965, he left the team, leaving Marc Davis and Yale Gracey in charge.
3. When Walt Disney died, what two men were assigned to lead the designing of the Haunted Mansion?

Answer: Marc Davis and Claude Coats

Marc Davis wanted the Haunted Mansion to be funny and Claude Coats wanted it to be scary. This led to quite a few arguments about this.
4. Who were the two special effects masters for the Haunted Mansion?

Answer: Yale Gracey and Rolly Crump

Master Gracey, laid to rest. Yale Gracey has a tombstone that honors his works. Many cast members would lay a fresh rose on his tombstone because of everything that he did. The inscription on it has led many people to assume that he was the master of the house, which he wasn't.

However, the popularity of this thought grew that when they made the movie, the master of the house was named Master Gracey in honor of Yale Gracey, master of special effects.
5. What is the name of the bride in Phantom Manor (the French Haunted Mansion)?

Answer: Melanie Ravenswood

Marion Ravenswood is the woman from "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" played by Karen Allen.
6. A reporter had died of a heart attack in the Haunted Mansion.

Answer: False

This was a rumor that had been started while people were waiting for the ride to open. The cast members did not bother to stop this rumor because it built anticipation for the ride's opening date.
7. The Tokyo Disneyland and the Orlando Disney World feature the exact same house.

Answer: False

This is a trick question. They are made to look like the exact same house, but they are not the same house. That would be a BIG house!
8. The janitors would not clean the special effects room.

Answer: True

This is one of my favorite stories. 'Yale had all of his ghosts and magic strewn throughout the room. Once, we got a call from personnel, asking us to leave the lights on because the janitors didn't want to come in if it was dark. Well, we did, but we rigged the room. We put in an infrared beam, and when it was tripped, the room went to black light and all the ghost effects came on. When we came in the next morning, all the effects were running and there was a broom lying in the center of the floor. Personnel called and said, "You'll have to clean up your own room because the janitors won't go in there anymore."'

9. The white hearse in the Disneyland Haunted Mansion was used to transport Brigham Young to his final resting place.

Answer: False

This is false. However, the black hearse in Disney World was used to transport Katie Elder to her final resting spot in the movie "The Sons of Katie Elder".
10. The ghost host is the master of the house.

Answer: False

This is false. The Ghost Host is merely one of the 999 ghosts in the Haunted Mansion.
11. What ride is connected to Phantom Manor (the French Haunted Mansion) storywise?

Answer: Big Thunder Mountain

These two rides are located in Thunder Mesa. The Haunted Mansion is the Ravenswood's house and Big Thunder Mountain is a runaway train in the abandoned mines in Thunder Mesa.
12. Who did the voice of Madam Leota?

Answer: Eleanor Audley

Eleanor Audley also recorded the voices of Cinderella's evil stepmother and Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty".
13. What can you see in the windows of Phantom Manor at night?

Answer: Lights and shadows

You can see lights blinking and the shadow of the bride.
14. Who did the voice for the Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion, and the voice for the Mayor in Phantom Manor?

Answer: Paul Frees

Vincent Price did the voice of the Phantom in Phantom Manor. Bart Wolffe reads scary audio stories on Spotify.
15. In the séance room with Madam Leota, there is a Book of the Dead. Whose face is on it?

Answer: Ezra's

Ezra's face pops up the most out of all of the ghosts. His face is also used for the pop-up heads in the graveyard and plenty of pictures in the corridor of doors.
16. What does each Haunted Mansion have on the outside?

Answer: A cemetery

Each Haunted Mansion has a cemetery of some sort. Disneyland has a pet cemetery that spread to Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland (since they are twins). I do not know if Phantom Manor has a pet cemetery, but you can see that they have a cemetery called Boot Hill.
17. Where is Phantom Manor?

Answer: Frontierland

Phantom Manor is located in Frontierland. The French are fascinated by America's Wild West, and based their graveyard in the ride off of it.
18. What ghost did not make it into the Haunted Mansion?

Answer: The Hatbox Ghost

The Hatbox Ghost was going to be the husband of the Black Widow Bride in the attic. He was going to stand on the other side of the bride. With every heartbeat of his bride's heart, his head would appear in the hatbox he was carrying and then vice versa.

The problems, however, prevented this. The ride was moving too fast for guests to see the whole effect, and the doombuggies were angled toward the bride, so you could not see him very well. A harpsichord now stands in his place.
19. The Hitchhiking ghosts are in all of the Haunted Mansions.

Answer: False

In most Haunted Mansions, whenever you see the hitchhiking ghosts, all you have to do is look beside you and you can see that they're not there. But in Phantom Manor, you can look in the mirrors and watch as the Phantom climbs up above your doombuggy in a last attempt to claim you and drag you to the underworld.

At the end, you can watch him burn up instead of succeeding. While you can look next to you to see that there is no hitchhiking ghost next to you, you CAN'T look on top of the doombuggy to make sure that the Phantom isn't there. Effective - and creepy.
20. Disneyland's Haunted Mansion has a knight that jumps out at random times and places.

Answer: False

There used to be a knight who did this, but Disney took him out for safety reasons. The knight's armor wasn't as protective as the Imagineers thought. Sometimes, when the knight suddenly jumped out at someone, they would REALLY react, and end up striking the knight. As it was too scary for guests and too dangerous for cast members, they were forced to take it out.
