Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fish called Blinky posed quite a problem for Mr. Burns in "The Simpsons" TV show. What was unusual about Blinky?

Answer: It had three eyes

Whilst fishing near Springfield's power plant, Bart and Lisa Simpson caught a bizarre three-eyed fish. A passing reporter was taken aback by this creature and hastily ran the story, much to the dismay of the power plant's owner, Mr. Burns. This mutant fish came back to haunt Mr. Burns during his campaign to become Springfield's governor. To prove that Blinky was not a product of the toxic waste from his plant, Burns decided to eat the fish live on TV, but his failure to keep it down led to him losing the campaign.
2. Which H.P. Lovecraft monster, described as having an octopus-like head covered with tentacles, lived beneath the Pacific Ocean?

Answer: Cthulhu

Cthulhu first appeared in the 1926 short story "The Call of Cthulhu". The creature was an extraterrestrial trapped in a stone city, R'lyeh, under the sea, but it was able to communicate telepathically with humans who developed cults around it. Cthulhu appeared in several other of Lovecraft's works and was embraced by pop culture, showing up in video games and cartoons.
3. Which onomatopoeic cephalopods from the 'Mario' franchise have made life difficult for the Italian plumber and company over the years, bursting out of subaquatic pipes, swimming through the waters of the Mushroom Kingdom and even squirting ink onto the windscreens of karting racers?

Answer: Bloopers

Long have underwater levels been the bane of many Nintendo gamers' lives. From the infamous Water Temple in 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' to the fear-inducing eel that haunts the depths of Jolly Roger Bay in 'Super Mario 64', aquatic levels are certainly not amongst the favourites. There are some exceptions, however, but the appearance of Blooper the squid in a 'Super Mario Bros.' game can only mean anguish and annoyance.

Making their first appearance in the original 'Super Mario Bros.', Bloopers move in a zig-zag fashion through the water - they sink slightly before moving diagonally upwards. The direct of movement entirely depends on where Mario is. Their constant pursuit and erratic movement style adds an extra layer of difficulty on top of what is already a tricky environment to traverse, given the difference in how Mario controls on land and in the sea. Thankfully, when it comes to the 'Mario Kart' series, Bloopers aren't as painful. When a Blooper item is obtained by a racer, it will squirt ink onto the screens of all other racers, temporarily obscuring part of their view.
4. Poor Tom Hanks. All his life, he's been waiting for someone and when he finds her, she's a fish. What exactly was Madison in the film "Splash"?

Answer: A mermaid

In the 1984 film "Splash", Tom Hanks' Allen fell in love with Darryl Hannah's Madison, not realizing that she was a mermaid. The fact that she came from a place where they didn't wear clothes, didn't have ice, didn't have music, spoke in a screeching tone that shattered televisions, and ate lobsters shell and all didn't tip him off that something was amiss.

When a splash of water brought out her fins, Allen had to decide whether to follow Madison back to her home under the sea or let her go.
5. Which eccentric British television presenter had a children's TV show called "Shark Infested Custard"?

Answer: Harry Hill

"Shark Infested Custard" was Hill's first foray into children's TV. It included comedy sketches and general mayhem. Hill is more well-known for his long-running TV programme "Harry Hill's TV Burp", which poked fun at various programmes that had appeared on British television that week. Hill is also a qualified medical doctor.
6. In the 1870 novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea", an expedition is sent to hunt a sea monster. What did the "sea monster" turn out to be?

Answer: A submarine

In the Jules Verne novel, the mysterious Captain Nemo has built the Nautilus, a submarine that roams the seas, wreaking havoc on ships. The U.S. Navy is sent to destroy the monster, not realizing that it is actually a machine. Three members from the naval vessel end up being captured and brought aboard the submarine where they meet Nemo and accompany him as he travels around the world, partly for research purposes and partly for revenge against civilization.
7. Radiohead's 'Weird Fishes/Arpeggi' comes from which album, released in 2007?

Answer: In Rainbows

Originally just called 'Arpeggi', 'Weird Fishes/Arpeggi' was one of the songs that the band first performed while on tour a year before the album was released. 'In Rainbows' was the band's first self-released album, after their contract with EMI ended with their previous album. What is perhaps more unusual is that initially, buyers were able to choose the price they wanted to pay to download the album from its website.

A physical CD was available to purchase at retail some time after.
8. "Release the Kraken!" This may conjure up thoughts of this film, which was released in 1981 and re-made in 2010. Which film is it?

Answer: Clash of the Titans

This classic 1981 film showed the fearsome kraken as something akin to the "Creature from the Black Lagoon". The 2010 film portrayed something much truer to the classic image of the kraken (a bit like a giant ship-eating squid). Despite "The Clash of the Titans" being based on Greek mythology, the kraken is borrowed from Norse mythology.

The Vikings explained deaths at sea and destruction of boats in vicious waters as the actions of the kraken.
9. What species of cetaceous mammal was Ecco, a video game sea-dweller who first appeared in his eponymous game for Sega systems in 1992?

Answer: Dolphin

Picture the scene: a time-travelling dolphin who fights aliens. If you can, you've just imagined 'Ecco the Dolphin', a video game for the Sega Mega Drive developed by Novotrade International. The principle was simple enough: build up some speed, whack some enemies, make some dolphin noises, whack some more enemies, come up for air, ad infinitum. 'Ecco the Dolphin' was notorious in its day for being rather unusually difficult, compared to other popular releases around at the time such as Sega's very own 'Sonic' series.

It seems this design choice was intentional, though, as evidenced when the game's designer noted that he didn't want people to rent the video game and complete it in a weekend. Such was its popularity, however, that it spawned a sequel in 1994: 'Ecco: The Tides of Time'.
10. If you've ever had the urge to smack someone with a fish, you might enjoy the Fish-Slapping Dance, a sketch from which comedy act?

Answer: Monty Python

The 1972 skit that appeared on the Monty Python's Flying Circus TV show only lasted about twenty seconds and had no dialogue. It consisted only of John Cleese and Michael Palin dressed up in British explorer attire slapping each other with fish while dancing to the "Merrymaker's Dance" by composer Sir Edward German.

The skit was apparently one of Michael Palin's favorites. A variation of the skit appeared in Eric Idle's Broadway musical "Spamalot".
