Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nerve damage to his hands prevented this doctor from performing surgeries so he became a sorcerer.

Answer: Strange

Stephen Strange was one of the world's best surgeons until he was involved in car crash which damaged his hands to the point where he could no longer perform operations. After falling into despair, Strange began a quest to try and find a cure for his damaged hands which led him to Tibet where he encountered an aged monk called The Ancient One.

A person of vast mystical power and knowledge, who was not just a monk, but the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, the Ancient One began training Strange in long forgotten mystic disciplines after he had thwarted an attempt on the Ancient One's life by a former disciple, Baron Mordo. Strange proved to be worthy of the Ancient One's faith and eventually inherited the role of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.

Doctor Strange made his first appearance in Marvel Comics' "Strange Tales" #110.
2. Constant exposure to magnetism created an evil personality within this doctor who became a supervillain.

Answer: Polaris

The world's foremost expert on using magnetic forces in order to cure patients of their afflictions, Dr. Neal Emerson became a victim of his good intentions when constant exposure to those forces created an evil personality within him. Emerson would vacillate between his good and evil sides, but after each period, his evil side became more and more dominate until his good side was completely supplanted.

Emerson, now calling himself Doctor Polaris, had the ability to tap into the magnetic forces which surrounded Earth and used that power to generate force bolts, fly, control metals, and many other things.

Doctor Polaris made his comic debut in "Green Lantern" #12 (vol.2).
3. This doctor's physical body was destroyed turning him into a being of pure energy.

Answer: Bedlam

Doctor Bedlam was a resident of the planet Apokolips and a member of the elite ruling class of the evil god, Darkseid. It is not known what exactly happened to Bedlam's physical body, only that it was destroyed due to unknown circumstances although it could be speculated that it was at Darksied's command that Bedlam's form be changed from a physical one into an energy one.

Doctor Bedlam had the ability to transfer his energy into a host of robots which he had built; however, the more he divided his essence between them, the less control he had over his energy and it would eventually be dispersed into the ether; however, he could never be completely destroyed and would, in time, re-assemble.

Doctor Bedlam's power was to instill an intense fear into anyone he came in contact with via his 'paranoid pill', an invention of his own making. He made his first comic book appearance in DC Comics' "Mister Miracle" #2 (vol. 1)
4. An exploding star empowers this doctor with the ability to control and manipulate all forms of light.

Answer: Light II

Scientist Kimiyo Hoshi was observing the star, Vega, when it exploded and bombarded her with its light. Hoshi was transformed into a being of immense power and was now able to harness and manipulate all forms of light. Taking the name Doctor Light II, she would distinguish herself from the evil, original Doctor Light, by assisting the superhero community during the Crisis on Infinite Earths turmoil. Doctor Light II would go on to become a well-respected hero by the public, as well as her superheroic peers, although her adventures would take a backseat to her first calling of being a scientist

Doctor Light II made her comic book debut in DC Comics' 12 maxi-series, "Crisis on Infinite Earths" #4 (vol.1).
5. His psychic twin forces this doctor to commit crimes after coming into possession of the fabled Philosopher's Stone.

Answer: Alchemy

Albert Desmond was a former villain of Barry Allen, the second person to wear the costume of The Flash. Desmond, who at the time went by the name, Mr. Element, happened upon the fabled Philosopher's Stone, an artifact of immense power which could transmute one element into another. Changing his name to the more appropriate, Doctor Alchemy, Desmond would continue to plague the Flash until he finally gave up his criminal ways and went straight.

However, unbeknownst to Albert, he had a psychic twin (a person born at the exact moment he was, though thousands of miles away), named Alvin Desmond who, like Albert previously, was also susceptible to criminal urges. Alvin realized that those urges would all but disappear whenever Albert would commit crimes so, tapping into their psychic rapport, Alvin was able to persuade Albert to return to his life of crime until The Flash figured out what had happened and brought Alvin to justice, thus clearing Albert of all charges in the process.

Doctor Alchemy first appeared in DC Comics' "Showcase" #13 (vol. 1).
6. This doctor invented a machine that turned dreams into nightmares which could be made real.

Answer: Destiny

Very little is known of Doctor Destiny's early life, but what is known is not good; he was evil from beginning. Destiny infiltrated the Justice League of America when he impersonated Hal Jordan, the second Green Lantern. He almost defeated them, but the team overcame him in the end. While in prison, Destiny invented the materioptikon, a machine that allowed him to infiltrate the dreams of anyone he desired and turn those dreams into nightmares. The materioptikon also provided Destiny with the added ability to make the nightmares as real as he wanted them to be.

Understanding that he would be a constant threat, the League assigned a psychiatrist to hypnotize Destiny into destroying the materioptikon, but this event came with unforeseen consequences as Dhe could no longer have dreams himself which drove him mad. He would return numerous times to plague the Justice League but they always found a way to beat him.

Doctor Destiny made his first appearance in DC Comics' "Justice League of America" #5 (vol.1).
7. This scientist blamed Diana Prince (Wonder Woman II) for her face being disfigured after a gangster had thrown hot coals into it.

Answer: Cyber

A world-renowned scientist and Olympic-level athlete, Doctor Cyber was a sworn enemy to Diana Prince (Wonder Woman II) after her face was disfigured by a gangster having thrown hot coals into it. Cyber, who was fighting a powerless Prince at the time, wrongly believed that Prince was responsible her pain and anguish.

After Prince regained her powers, Doctor Cyber knew she could not compete with her so she built a superpowered suit which gave her the ability to 'level the playing field' between them. The suit contained a host of weaponry which truly tested Wonder Woman's skill and endurance, but in the end, Cyber was always defeated.

Doctor Cyber made her DC Comics' debut in "Wonder Woman" #179 (vol. 1).
8. Orphaned American child raised in China rises through the ranks of the underworld to become a master of illusion and hypnosis.

Answer: Tzin-Tzin

Raised in China after being orphaned as a child in America, Doctor Tzin-Tzin fell into a life of criminality after joining the organization called The Tong. Focusing his efforts on the study of hypnosis and other forms of illusion, Tzin-Tzin became a very powerful figure within the Tong and journeyed back to America in order to conquer it; unfortunately for him, he chose to set up his base of operations in Gotham City, the home of the crime-fighting team, Batman and Robin. The Dynamic Duo defeated Tzin-Tzin many times until he eventually left Gotham City and tried to set up shop in San Francisco, but he was defeated there, as well, by Supergirl and Johnny Double.

Doctor Tzin-Tzin made his debut in DC Comics' "Detective Comics" #354 (vol. 1).
9. This doctor is believed to have been the first costumed hero (NOT SUPERHERO) of the Golden Age.

Answer: Occult

Little is known about the origins of Doctor Occult, although it is believed that he was the first costumed hero of the Golden Age when his exploits began in 1935. A member of the mysterious group, The Seven, Occult's powers were magical and very formidable. He was able to travel vast distances via the astral plane, cast illusions, possess minds, and a host of other supernatural abilities. Occult also carried a powerfully magical talisman through which he could focus all of his energies.

Doctor Occult made his comic book debut in DC Comics' "New Fun Comics" #6.
10. A slight miscalculation in this doctor's notes triggered an explosion which disfigured his face, causing him to wrongly blame a classmate.

Answer: Doom

Born to gypsy parents, Werner and Cynthia von Doom, Victor was well-acquainted with the prejudice due to his parents' chosen lifestyle. Extremely close to his mother, Victor was devastated when his parents were killed by an angry mob; unknowingly, their actions had sown the seeds for the rise of the future Doctor Doom!

Because he hoped to one day discover a way to rescue his mother from Hell, Victor threw himself into the study of science and sorcery. Winning a scholarship to an American university, Doom became one of the top minds at the college along with a classmate named Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), the future leader of the superhero team, the Fantastic Four. One day while working on a machine that would allow him to cross dimensions and, hopefully, contact his deceased mother, Richards happened by and, after reviewing Doom's notes, found that he was a decimal point off on his calculations. But Doom, in his arrogance, would not heed the warning; this would lead to the explosion which disfigured his face and his being expelled from the university.

The embarrassment of his failure was too much for Doom's unstable mind to grasp. What happened could not have been his mistake; Doom was too brilliant to have made an error! The fault had to lie with someone else and that person was Reed Richards! Traveling to Tibet, Doom encountered an order of monks which awakened his latent mystical abilities. He persuaded them to train him in how to fully control his growing magical powers and became so skilled that he was hailed as their leader. Forging him a sophisticated suit of armor, Doom would become the Marvel universe's greatest villain and would have run-ins with almost every superhero at some point, but none moreso than Richards' Fantastic Four team. In my opinion, he would become THE GREATEST supervillain in ALL of entertainment. He would become...Doctor Doom!

Next to Reed Richards, Doctor Doom was, in many ways, the greatest and most brilliant mind in the Marvel universe. His biggest flaw was his arrogance and unbelief that he could ever make a mistake, which would always bring about his defeat. Doom was also a skilled sorcerer who would give any mystic, including Doctor Strange, a 'run for their money'.

Marvel Comics' "Fantastic Four" #5 (vol.1) would be Doctor Doom's first comic book appearance.
