Marius did not know at the time that it was Éponine, but he finds out when he sees her lying on the ground, bleeding to death. Before she dies, Éponine asks Marius to kiss her on the forehead. He does so.

While the robbery takes place in the Thérnardiers Apartment, Marius still witnesses the robbery. Marius overhears Thérnardier's plan to rob Valjean, and he alerts the police. Javert gives Marius a gun to signal the police should this happen, and Marius watches quietly outside the apartment.
