Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After Dolly Parton bought part of the company in 1986, what became the new name for the amusement park, Silver Dollar City, located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee?

Answer: Dollywood

Dollywood's history actually started much earlier than Silver Dollar City. The park originally opened in 1961 as Rebel Railroad with a blacksmith shop, a saloon, a train, and a general store. The park was purchased by Cleveland Browns owner, Art Modell, in 1970 and was renamed Goldrush Junction. During this time, it was expanded to include a church, a log flume ride, and an outdoor theater. When the Herschend family bought it in 1976, the name was briefly shortened to Goldrush, before being renamed Silver Dollar City Tennessee in 1977. When Dolly Parton bought an interest in the park, part of the deal was that the park be renamed as Dollywood. Dolly Parton grew up in the area and wanted to become a part of something that would help the community.

Dollywood not only has a theme park, but also a water park called Splash Country, a resort, and cabins. Park visitors can still take train rides around the park, while listening to the tour guide talk about some of the area's history. Another attraction at Dollywood is the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, which is home to the largest collection of non-releasable bald eagles in the US.

3. Which of these "Donkey Kong Country" video game characters is able to fly?

Answer: Squawks the Bird

Squawks is a parrot, so he most definitely can fly. Squawks the bird holds a flashlight for you in levels that are too dark to see, just as Glimmer the fish does in underwater levels in "Donkey Kong Country 2". Rambi the Rhino, Expresso the Ostrich, Winky the Frog, and Enguarde the Swordfish are other characters that appear as characters on "Donkey Kong Country". Added to the cast in "Donkey Kong Country 2" is a spider and a snake, and we lose Winky in the game.

Only Squawks the Bird can fly, though Expresso can sort of fly for a short period of time.

4. In toys, TV and movies, what are Autobots and Decepticons?

Answer: Transformers

In the television series and movie, the Transformers come from the planet Cybertron. They have the ability to tranform from their regular robot-like selves into plain looking objects, most often vehicles. The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime are the 'good guys', and Megatron and the Decepticons are the villains.

They fight for control of their planet, and sometimes their feud extends to Planet Earth.

5. Why did athletic shoes start getting called "sneakers"?

Answer: They made much less noise

The term was well in use by 1887 when the Boston Journal mentioned that "sneakers" was the term "the name boys give to tennis shoes." The term was coined due to the fact that the rubber-soled shoes were much quieter than the hard leather soles of regular shoes.

6. The 1946 novel, 1948 play, 1955 motion picture, 1965-66 television series, and the 1984 made-for-TV movie "Mister Roberts" are all set where?

Answer: onboard a US naval vessel

"Mister Roberts" was written by Thomas Heggen based upon his own experiences during WWII aboard the USS Virgo and the USS Rotanin. The title character, LTJG Douglas A. "Doug" Roberts, is stationed aboard a US Navy cargo ship, the USS Reluctant the war.

The Reluctant's captain, LCDR Morton (played by James Cagney in the first film) was based on LCDR Herbert Ezra Randall Sr., a career naval officer, at whose funeral in 1997 a potted palm tree (reminiscent of the novel, play, movie) was placed by his crew on his grave.

8. This animated character, which is part of the bird family Picidae, made his first appearance on 25 November 1940 and was originally voiced by Mel Blanc. What is this character with a much recognised laugh?

Answer: Woody Woodpecker

All the answers are part of the Looney Tunes family. Woody Woodpecker was created by Walter Lantz and Ben Hardaway who had also previously created the characters of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny at the Warner Brothers cartoon studio in the 1930s. Woody continued for many years with a range of different voice actors and his last television feature was in 1972.

He has continued though to appear in both films and video games. Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck as mentioned previously came from the same studio. Bugs, most well known for his catchphrase 'What's up Doc?' has appeared in more films than any other cartoon character. Daffy first appeared in 1937 in a short cartoon 'Porky's Duck Hunt' and went on to be the third most featured character in the Looney Tunes programmes after Bugs and Porky. Porky Pig first appeared in 1935 and an interesting fact about this stuttering pig is that his original voice actor, Joseph Dougherty also had a stutter.
