Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maggie Simpson
Answer: The Simpsons
Forever a pacifier-sucking toddler, Margaret Evelyn Simpson, aka Maggie, was the youngest of the three Simpson children on the long-running cartoon TV series. Maggie rarely talked and thus was not much more than a background character on the show, but she did have one shining moment in the finale of the sixth season in 1995: she shot Mr. Burns for trying to steal candy from a baby.
2. Margaret Houlihan
Answer: M*A*S*H*
Major Margaret Houlihan was portrayed by Sally Kellerman in the 1970 film "M*A*S*H" and by Loretta Swit in the TV show which ran from 1972 to 1983. Houlihan was a by-the-book army nurse who picked up the nickname "Hot Lips" from a tryst she had with another army officer Frank Burns. Over the years in the TV series, her character mellowed, and she grew more tolerant of the goofy characters with whom she was stationed.
3. Margaret Dashwood
Answer: Sense and Sensibility
The youngest of the Dashwood sisters, Margaret was played by Emelie Francois (aka Myriam Francois-Cerrah) in the 1995 film version of the Jane Austen novel "Sense and Sensibility". In the film, Margaret was a bit of a tomboy with an interest in geography and was called "Captain Margaret" by Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant).
4. Maggie Seaver
Answer: Growing Pains
Maggie Seaver was the mom on the TV series "Growing Pains" which ran from 1985 to 1992, and she was portrayed by Joanna Kerns. While both parents worked on the show, it was Maggie who went to work each day as a journalist, while her psychiatrist husband worked from home to keep an eye on the kids.
5. Margaret Meldrew
Answer: One Foot in the Grave
Played by Annette Crosbie, Margaret Meldrew was the long suffering wife of the irascible Victor Meldrew (played by Richard Wilson) in the British sitcom which ran from 1990 to 2001. A hugely popular programme, it ended, somewhat unusually, with the lead character of Victor being killed off in a hit and run accident.
6. Margaret Schlegel
Answer: Howards End
The role of Margaret Schlegel in the 1992 film version of "Howards End" won Emma Thompson the Academy Award for Best Actress. Margaret was the oldest of the three Schlegel siblings, an intellectual family of moderate means who become entwined with the wealthy, conservative Wilcox family. Howards End was actually the house which had been willed to Margaret by Ruth Wilcox on her deathbed, although the Wilcox family decided to disregard the bequest.
7. Maggie the Cow
Answer: Home on the Range
Maggie the cow, voiced by Roseanne Barr, was the protagonist of the 2004 animated Disney film "Home on the Range". She had been sold to an elderly woman who was on the verge of having her farm repossessed by the bank. Maggie convinced fellow cows Grace (Jennifer Tilly) and Mrs Caloway (Judi Dench) to become bounty hunters to get reward money that could be used to pay off the farm debt.
8. Maggie the Cat
Answer: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Margaret Pollitt was the real name of Maggie the Cat, who was portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1958 film version of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". The story followed the turmoil around a southern American family who had gathered for the patriarch's 65th birthday. Maggie was in a fiery and lonely marriage to the alcoholic Brick (Paul Newman) who spent much of the time trying to avoid her while she desperately wanted a baby.
9. Maggie Greene
Answer: The Walking Dead
Maggie Greene was a character in both "The Walking Dead" zombie comic book series and the TV show. On the TV show, she was portrayed by Lauren Cohan. The TV character differed somewhat from the comic book character in that Maggie was a much stronger person - independent and confident - on the TV series.
In season three of the show, Maggie married Glenn Rhee, and she became a widow in season seven.
10. Margaret Anderson
Answer: Father Knows Best
Portrayed by Jane Wyatt, Margaret Anderson was the stereotypical 1950s housewife on the TV series "Father Knows Best". The series started on radio in 1949, where Margaret was portrayed by June Whitley and Jean Vander Pyl, and it ran on TV from 1954 to 1960. Although called "Father Knows Best", it was often the level-headed Margaret Anderson who was the voice of reason on the show.
