Superman detected the beam the second it went off, and covered Lois up instantly, which allowed for the power transfer. During its third appearance, his powers became amplified to 700% of their usual strength, which brought about complications. Clark couldn't touch things without breaking them, couldn't heat food without burning it to a crisp, and couldn't hug Lois because his 700% hug left her with bruises aplenty.
