She advised on marital problems, drug and alcohol addiction, parental issues, identity theft, teen pregnancy, financial problems, and advice itself. In a 2007 story line, a 90-year old "competitor" moved into her complex and started giving advice. Mary was jealous of Ella Byrd, but in the end they became friends and decided there was room for both to give advice. Of course, Ella eventually left and Mary had the strip to herself again.
