Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What service did Mary Worth pride herself on giving to her friends, neighbors, acquaintances, enemies, strangers, or just about anybody she encounters?

Answer: Advice

Mary loved to give advice whether or not it was requested or desired. She advised on marital problems, drug and alcohol addiction, parental issues, identity theft, teen pregnancy, financial problems, and advice itself. In a 2007 story line, a 90-year old "competitor" moved into her complex and started giving advice. Mary was jealous of Ella Byrd, but in the end they became friends and decided there was room for both to give advice. Of course, Ella eventually left and Mary had the strip to herself again.
2. Where has Mary lived since the 1980s?

Answer: Santa Royale, California

Mary began giving advice in New York City way back in 1938. In 2008, she was the resident manager of Charterstone Condominiums in the fictional town of Santa Royale, California. This setting gave her the opportunity to constantly encounter new people that need advice. She interviewed new residents and learned about their situations and ever-present problems.
3. Who was Mary's best friend?

Answer: Toby Cameron

Toby Cameron was a young, beautiful neighbor. She was the second wife of Ian Cameron, an English professor at the local university. Toby's problems were at times used in the story line. A 2008 story revolved around her falling victim to identity theft. The strip served to educate the public on actions to minimize the risk of identity theft.
4. What was the name of neighbor Wilbur Weston's syndicated advice column?

Answer: Ask Wendy

Wilbur was a portly single parent in Charterstone. Unlike Ella Byrd, Mary had no problems with another advice expert in the complex. Many stories have revolved around the lives of Wilbur and his beautiful college-age daughter Dawn. Dawn started out as a overweight teenager and turned into quite the good-looking coed.
5. Which of the following people did NOT ever write the "Mary Worth" comic strip?

Answer: Charles Schulz

Charles Schulz was the genius behind the "Peanuts" comic strip. John Saunders started "Mary Worth" as a replacement for a discontinued strip called "Apple Mary". He wrote the strip until his retirement in 1979. His son John Saunders wrote the strip until his death in 2003. Karen Moy has written the strip from 2003 through 2008.
6. Who was the stalker that haunted Mary in a 2006 story line? (Hint: An anagram of his last name.)

Answer: Aldo Kelrast

Aldo Kelrast had a thing for Mary. He came on very strong and Mary's friends had an intervention to set him straight. Aldo was distressed. He then got very drunk and drove off a cliff. Death in the comics is rare and Aldo received quite a lot of publicity in the press when he went after Mary.

He also looked a lot like Captain Kangaroo. The other three names were characters in the strip but were all liked by Mary. (Stalker is an anagram for Kelrast.)
7. Mary Worth was never married?

Answer: False

Mary Worth began the strip as the widow of Jack Worth. He was a Wall Street tycoon. Financial independence gave her ample time to get involved in people's lives and render advice.
8. Who was Mary Worth's boyfriend in 2008?

Answer: Dr. Jeff Corey

Dr. Corey asked Mary to marry him every few months or so. Mary always told Jeff that she loved him but did not want to get married. In 2006, Mary saved Jeff from a serious disease he contacted in southeast Asia. They ate out often at their favorite restaurant, the Bum Boat. The other choices were well known serial comic strips.
9. Mary Worth was a teacher when she was young?

Answer: True

She was indeed a teacher in New York City before her marriage to tycoon Jack Worth. She was never actually a teacher in the strip because she was already an older widow when the strip began.
10. What famous comedienne once had a skit on her TV show called "Mary Worthless" that spoofed our beloved Mary?

Answer: Carol Burnett

The skit appeared in 1973 during the first year of "The Carol Burnett Show".
