Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the word "tuxedo" come from?

Answer: It is the name of a town and country club.

The US term "tuxedo" refers to what the English call a "Dinner Jacket". Apparently, some American members of the Tuxedo Club, Tuxedo NY, brought the style over from England, and it caught on in the US under the name "tuxedo".
2. My rental tux came with very shiny shoes that I didn't need to polish. What kind of material might they have been made of?

Answer: patent leather

Though shoes can be made of all these materials, patent leather is most likely to be found in a rental tuxedo outfit. Patent leather was originally treated with lacquer or linseed oil to give it a waterproof and permanent shine. Most modern patent leathers are treated with a plastic coating, if they're not entirely man made.
3. What do I do with the cummerbund that came with my rented tux?

Answer: wear it around my midriff

The word cummerbund comes to English from a Persian phrase meaning waist band.
Cummerbunds themselves can be worn instead of vests (waistcoats).
4. To which of these events would I wear my rented tuxedo?

Answer: I could wear the rented tuxedo to any of these events.

Tuxedos are considered formal wear, but not quite as formal as the "top had and tails" or white tie attire. They can be worn to most formal occasions in the US.
5. My rented tuxedo's shirt is just like any other business appropriate shirt - button down collar, smooth front, etc.

Answer: False

Tuxedo shirts (dress shirts in the UK) typically have pleated fronts and wing collars instead of smooth fronts and button down or turn down collars.
6. What's different about my rented tux's trousers from my regular suit's trousers?

Answer: The tuxedo trousers are decorated on the outer seam.

Tuxedo trousers almost never have cuffs (turn-ups) or belt loops. They're worn with suspenders (braces), not belts. Tuxedo trousers almost always have a decorative stripe on their outer seam, often made of the same material as the jacket lapel.
7. Usually, my rented tux would come with a bow tie. But this time, it's come with a tie that's named after a town in England, which is home to a very famous racetrack. What's the name of the town?

Answer: Ascot

The Ascot tie, or cravat, is not nearly as common as the bow tie, and is almost only seen in weddings, where it may distinguish the groom, wearing the bow tie, from the groomsmen, wearing ascots. As if being the one getting married didn't distinguish the groom enough.
8. While I'm wearing my rented tux, what might my wife be wearing?

Answer: Any of these would be appropriate

Dinner length dresses extend to the ankle, tea length dresses to mid-calf and cocktail length dresses extend to below the knee.
9. My rented tux's shirt doesn't have buttons on its cuff. What do I use instead to keep the sleeve closed?

Answer: cufflinks

Tuxedo shirts often have no cuff buttons, only two button holes. The cufflink joins the cuff at the button holes. The cuffs may either be joined "barrel style", where the inside of one side of the cuff is linked to the outside of the other side, and the cuff lies flat, or "kissing" where the inside of both sides of the cuff are joined, and the cuff protrudes from the shirt sleeve.
10. The famous tune "Tuxedo Junction" was written especially for Glenn Miller.

Answer: False

The song was originally written and performed by Erskine Hawkins, Bill Johnson, and Julian Dash, with lyrics by Buddy Feyne. Hawkins' band performed "Tuxedo Junction" before Miller's band. The song's title refers to a jazz club near Birmingham AL.
