Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A sash worn around the waist as an extension of the pants

Answer: Cummerbund

Cummerbunds, which look like large belts, have largely gone out of style in the United States. Traditionally speaking, the cummerbund would be the same color as the man's pants. However, over time, it became more fashionably acceptable to match the cummerbund to the bow tie or for it to be a completely different color, if not a motley of colors.
2. A decorative handkerchief

Answer: Pocket square

A pocket square is sometimes worn in the lapel pocket of their suit jacket. Pocket squares are purely aesthetic and not meant to be used. Sometimes the pocket square is sown into the pocket. A usable handkerchief should be kept one of the man's pants pockets.
3. Used as a fastener

Answer: Cufflinks

Cufflinks are pieces of men's jewelry worn on the cuffs to secure them in place. Cufflinks should only properly be worn on cuffs with buttonholes but no buttons. Cufflinks serve both the practical purpose of fastening the cuff and an aesthetic purpose. Cufflinks are often large and gaudy. It is not unusual for cufflinks to display some kind of crest, initials or family symbol.
4. A long coat with large cuffs and can be tied with a belt

Answer: Smoking jacket

The smoking jacket was the precursor to the now more common dinner jacket. Smoking jackets had large cuffs and collars to protect the man and his clothes from cigar ashes and smoke. They sometimes are mistaken for robes as they could be thinner than formal jackets and could be tied with a belt.

In the modern day, they are most famous for being worn by Hugh Hefner. Smoking jackets, like many items in this quiz, have largely gone out of style.
5. A formal black, blue or white jacket made of wool with silk lapels (usually)

Answer: Tuxedo

The word tuxedo can be interchangeably used to mean the formal jacket or the entirety of man's formal outfit. Properly speaking, a tuxedo jacket must be either blue, black or white, with black being preferred. The tuxedo has silk lapels and is typically considered to be the most formal jacket a man could wear.

It is considered proper to wear a white shirt, cummerbund, cufflinks and a bow tie with a tuxedo jacket, although this is often ignored for stylistic preferences.
6. A flower worn on the jacket lapel

Answer: Boutonniere

A boutonniere is a solitary flower that would be pushed through a vacant buttonhole rather than be pinned. Typically speaking, a boutonniere would be either a red rose or carnation. Boutonnieres are only usually worn on very formal occasions like proms and weddings. On other occasions, the boutonniere is usually replaced by a lapel pin or nothing at all.
7. A shoe with hidden laces

Answer: Oxford

An oxford is a formal leather shoe that is usually black or brown. The most prominent feature of an oxford is that fact that most of the shoelaces are hidden, specifically the eyelet holes the laces wind through. Nowadays, the oxford is made of fake leather rather than real leather.
8. The pattern lining on shoes

Answer: Brogueing

Brogueing, the decorative pattern seen sometimes on men's shoes, is most commonly seen on the toe caps in the form of small holes that form a shape or pattern. Other kinds of brogueing include decorative stitching. Typically, most brogueing does not add any extra material to the shoe.
9. A sleeveless shirt-like garment also called a vest

Answer: Waistcoat

Alternatively known as vests, waistcoats are meant to be worn over a dress shirt and under a jacket. They are sleeveless garments and are part of the traditional three-piece suit. Waistcoats were originally worn to hold pocket watches. It was considered acceptable for a man to remove his suit jacket at an event if he was wearing a waistcoat or vest underneath but not if he wasn't.
10. A semi-formal stiff hat with a curled brim

Answer: Homburg

A homburg is worn on semi-formal occasions. The homburg has a dent in the middle with a ribbon tied around it and a somewhat wide brim that curls up creating a gutter on the brim. Homburgs were more popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a less formal head covering than the top hat.
