Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour line did Rowan Atkinson defend in a 1990s BBC comedy?

Answer: Blue

"The Thin Blue Line" was a BBC TV comedy programme about a small town police station, which ran from 1995 to 1996. Rowan Atkinson played the part of Inspector Raymond Fowler in this comedy written by Ben Elton. Being a self-confessed "Dad's Army" fan, Ben Elton wrote the relationship between Inspectors Fowler and Grim very similar to the relationship between Chief Air Raid Precautions Warden William (Willie) Hodges and Captain George Mainwaring in "Dad's Army".

In fact in the episode "Rag Week", Inspector Fowler can actually be seen walking past a shop called "Mainwaring's".
2. "The Green Mile" by Stephen King is named after the length of grass prisoners have to walk when being released from prison.

Answer: False

The Green Mile was written by Stephen King as a serial novel in 1996 and was made into a film starring Tom Hanks in 1999. The Green Mile title actually refers to the colour of the floor between the death row cells and the execution chamber, which in this case contains an electric chair normally referred to as "Old Sparky". Most prison death row walks to the execution chamber are referred to as "the Last Mile".
3. Jasper Carrott had this colour "balls" in his game show and Bob Monkhouse had the same colour "shot" in his. What colour joins these two game shows together?

Answer: Gold

"Golden Balls" was a daytime TV game show presented by Jasper Carrott which ran from 25 February 2008 to 13 February 2009 in the UK. One hundred Golden Balls ranging in a prize value from £10 to £75000 were selected at random, along with Killer Balls. Four players played through rounds till two ended up head-to-head. At the end of the game whatever total had been won by the pair would either be shared or one person would win it all. This depended on how they voted when asked what to do with the cash. They could either take it all, or share. If one voted to steal it they won all the cash, if they both voted to share the cash they won half each, but if they both voted to steal neither won anything.

"The Golden Shot" ran in the UK from 1 July 1967 and 13 April 1975 and became must-view TV for a large British audience. The show was based on the German show "Der goldene Schuss" and involved contestants controlling a blindfolded operator of a crossbow which was attached to a television camera. The show's catchphrase was "Bernie, the bolt!" when the crossbow was armed in the studio.
4. What is the name of the children's TV programme first aired in the UK in 1958 that is named after the nautical flag flown when a ship is ready to leave port?

Answer: Blue Peter

The "blue peter" flag is a blue flag with a white square on it. The TV programme "Blue Peter" has been on TV screens in the UK since it first aired on the BBC in 1958. The programme is aimed at children aged 6-14 years of age. Until 2012 the programme was aired on the main BBC1 channel.

In 2012 it was moved to the BBC's CBBC (children's) channel as part of the digital switchover in the UK. As of 2013 it is still being aired and is one of the longest running children's TV programmes in the world.
5. A 1935 song, which has been recorded by over 35 different artists, has what color sails in the title?

Answer: Red

"Red Sails in the Sunset" was published in 1935 and since that date till now has been recorded by artists as different as Bing Crosby, Vera Lynn, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Connie Francis, Dean Martin and Engelbert Humperdinck. With music by Hugh Williams and lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy, the song was originally inspired by the red sails of a yacht Jimmy Kennedy often saw off the North coast of Ireland.
6. "Pot Black" was a UK TV programme about pool.

Answer: False

Pot Black was an annual snooker tournament held in Britain from 1969 till 1986 and was televised on the BBC. The format was a one frame knockout tournament, with one frame played in each weekly half hour programme. The highest ever break was made by Mark Williams with a score of 119.

The first transmissions were in black and white and commentators would often refer to a coloured ball not by its colour but by its shade of grey compared to the other colours. The theme tune was a piece of music called "The Black and White Rag" played by Winifred Atwell.
7. A spin-off programme from the BBC award-winning programme "Only Fools and Horses" has this colour named twice in its title. What colour is this?

Answer: Green

"The Green Green Grass" was a spin-off from "Only Fools and Horses", initially written and created by John Sullivan. Boycie had to move to the country with his wife Marlene and son Tyler to hide from the Driscoll brothers. The programme was set on a farm in rural Shropshire.

The programme ran for four series and three Christmas specials. After the fourth episode the BBC did not commission any more series.
8. What colour is in the title of a BBC2 music programme that ran from 1971 to 1987 and then transferred to BBC radio 2 to replace the programme "Disco Two"?

Answer: Grey

"The Old Grey Whistle Test" ran for just over 16 years on BBC TV. What the programme called serious rock music is what it concentrated on and not always what was in the charts at the time. Various TV comedy shows have done parodies of "The Old Grey Whistle Test".

They include Benny Hill with his 1975 sketch "Old Grey Whistle Tester" and an episode of "Father Ted" called "The Old Grey Whistle Theft". "The Fast Show" also regularly did a sketch called "Jazz Club" which was also based on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" and "Whispering" Bob Harris, one of the "Whistle Tests" presenters.
9. What colour connects a 1984 Prince album and a 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg?

Answer: Purple

Both reached number one in the US top ten singles chart. The title track "Purple Rain" only reached the number 2 spot.

The 1985 Steven Spielberg film "The Colour Purple" was based on the 1982 book by Alice Walker. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, it holds the joint record for the amount of Oscar nominations without winning any with the 1977 film "The Turning Point".
10. Three James Bond films have had the colour gold in the title somewhere. One was "The Man with the Golden Gun". Another was "GoldenEye". What was the third?

Answer: Goldfinger

The 1964 film "Goldfinger" was the third film in the James Bond series starring Sean Connery in the title role. Gert Frobe played the villain in the film, Auric Goldfinger, a gold magnate obsessed with the substance who planned to rob to rob the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox.

One of the other stars of the film was the Aston Martin DB5 car used in the film. Models of this car now change hands for ridiculous prices on online auctions and at antiques fairs in the UK. These models, in mint condition, in the original box and with all the accessories included, can sell for hundreds of pounds.
