Johnny Moss was the first. Stu Ungar was second, being recognized for 1980, 1981, and 1997. At the writing of this question, Mr. Brunson and Mr. Chan had each been recognized twice.

Jamie Gold won the WSOP Main Event that year, but Poker 915 opted to switch their criteria from recognizing the Main Event winner to recognizing the HORSE winner. Many top pros actually feel the HORSE Event is a more prestigious title because A) One must be proficient at five different forms of poker to win (Hold 'Em, Omaha High/Low, Razz, 7-Card Stud, 7-Card Stud Eight Or Better) B) Due to this fact, and the large buy-in it is played almost exclusively by top pros, thus greatly reducing the luck/donk factor.

Tuan Lee won the WPT World Championship in 2005 for the 2004-2005 season.
