Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Now, that Ms. Carlyle was a great _____."

Answer: Ape

The cartoon shows two explorers lost in the jungle. Their car has a puncture and an ape swings down from the trees to fix it. Larson has lots of great jokes involving primates and also primitive humans.
2. "The often romanticized image of cowboys and ______."

Answer: Aliens

As you might have guessed, the cartoon shows a battle between a cowboy and some flying saucers. Larson seems to have the idea that cowboy culture was heavily influenced by extra-terrestrials.
3. "Scene from ________________."

Answer: Fiddle Attraction

Here we see a violin in its bedroom. There is a saxophone outside holding a knife. Weird scenarios like this are all too common in the land of "Far Side."
4. "Dogs and ________: The tragic untold story."

Answer: Alcohol

This cartoon depicts three drunken dogs at the zoo. Two of them are trying to persuade the other one to go and have a fight with a leopard.
5. "Small defenseless village ________________."

Answer: plundering hours

Here we see a group of Vikings politely waiting until ten o'clock before they go in to raid a village. Historical farce is another Larson strong point.
6. "On monster ___________."

Answer: Refrigerators

In this cartoon we see a monster at his fridge studying the notes that he has stuck there as reminders. They say things like "Friday, Hide in Paula Schmidt's closet."
7. "In the longest hour of his life, Morty takes the dare of his sloth buddies and crosses the _____________."

Answer: Autobahn

The cartoon shows Morty crossing the autobahn. There is a sign nearby saying "Berlin 50 miles." Although I do not really know why sloths should be particularly associated with Germany.
8. "The gods play with Ted and _____."

Answer: Jerry

In this picture two men on a desert island are having an argument and there is a box containing dueling pistols floating towards them. Desert islands are another common "Far Side" feature.
9. "Say, it's only a paper ____."

Answer: Moon

This one is just a take-off of a song lyric. Larson's cartoons occasionally use puns but they are not really a common feature.
10. "I'm afraid you misunderstood, I said I'd like _______."

Answer: A mango

The picture shows two apes dancing. The misunderstanding being that one ape had said he would like a mango and the other had thought he said tango.
