Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Burn Notice
Answer: Sam Axe
Portrayed by Bruce Campbell, Sam Axe was a former Navy Seal who was the best friend and associate of burned spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) on the show "Burn Notice", which ran from 2007 to 2013. Axe had retired to Miami to become a kept man, and when he wasn't helping Westen on one of his cases, he could usually be found drinking mojitos in a bar. Sam Axe even had his own 2011 TV movie, "Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe" which introduced us to Axe's life before he left the service.
2. Sixteen Candles
Answer: Samantha Baker
One of John Hughes' memorable 1980s characters, Samantha Baker was portrayed by Molly Ringwald in the 1984 teen comedy "Sixteen Candles". The film was based around her family forgetting her sixteenth birthday because they were distracted by her older sister's wedding, but there were other elements in the film: her crush on a popular senior, a geeky freshman who had a crush on her, and a visit from her grandparents who brought along a quirky foreign exchange student. "Sixteen Candles" was the first Hughes film for Ringwald; she would later appear in "The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink".
3. Quantum Leap
Answer: Sam Beckett
Scott Bakula portrayed Dr. Samuel Beckett on the sci-fi series "Quantum Leap" which ran from 1989 to 1993. Beckett was a physicist who became stuck in a time travel experiment. He used his time traveling "leaps" to make minor tweaks to the course of history, often meeting famous people or being involved in famous incidents, such as the Kennedy assassination (he prevented Jacqueline Kennedy's death). Bakula received several Emmy nominations and won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Beckett.
4. The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Answer: Sam Gamgee
Samwise Gamgee was a hobbit and Frodo Baggins' closest friend. Sean Astin, the son of John Astin and Patty Duke, portrayed Sam in Peter Jackson's 2001-2003 film trilogy for "The Lord of the Rings". Some have argued that it was Sam, not Frodo, who was the hero of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
While Frodo bore the responsibility for disposing of the ring in the fires of Mount Doom, he was affected by the power of the ring and wouldn't have survived the journey if it weren't for Sam.
5. Bewitched
Answer: Samantha Stevens
Elizabeth Montgomery portrayed Samantha Stevens on the 1960s TV show "Bewitched". Although a witch, Samantha married a mortal, Darrin, and chose to live as human housewife - a difficult task considering the frequent interference of her family. Montgomery received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her portrayal of Samantha but didn't win.
A film version of "Bewitched" was released in 2005 with Nicole Kidman portraying Samantha Stevens, but the film was critically-panned and didn't do particularly well at the box office.
6. The Maltese Falcon
Answer: Sam Spade
Humphrey Bogart portrayed private detective Sam Spade in the 1941 film noir version of Dashiell Hammett's novel "The Maltese Falcon". In the film, Spade and his partner, Miles Archer, were asked by a client to look for her sister who was involved with an unsavory man, but when both the man and Archer turned up dead, the police considered Spade to be a suspect. Spade then had to solve the murders to exonerate himself, but he also had to solve a mystery involving a "black figure of a bird". Bogart wasn't the first to play Sam Spade on film; Ricardo Cortez portrayed the character in 1931, and Warren William did so in 1936.
7. Stargate SG-1
Answer: Samantha Carter
Portrayed by Amanda Tapping, Samantha Carter was an astrophysicist and U.S. Air Force officer on the sci-fi TV show "Stargate SG-1" which ran from 1997 to 2007 and on the spin-off series "Stargate Atlantis" which ran from 2004 to 2009 and "Stargate Universe" which ran from 2009 to 2011.
Although the TV series were based on the 1994 "Stargate", Carter wasn't a character in the film. She was introduced on the TV series as an Air Force Captain, eventually being promoted to Colonel, and she appeared in more episodes of the "Stargate" franchise than any other character.
8. Cheers
Answer: Sam Malone
Sam Malone was played in "Cheers" by Ted Danson and featured in every single episode of the series. The character had been a relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox baseball team, but problems with alcohol and a fondness for the opposite sex meant his time with the team was numbered.
He was recovering from his alcoholic problems at the start of the series, but his womanizing ways continued off and on throughout the series, including relationships with Diane Chambers, played by Shelley Long, and Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley).
The series ran from 1982 to 1993 and despite an unpromising start, soon became a huge ratings winner. The final words in the series were spoken by Sam Malone to a customer trying to gain access to the bar, "Sorry, we're closed."
9. Ghost
Answer: Sam Wheat
Patrick Swayze portrayed Sam Wheat in the 1990 film "Ghost". He was the live-in boyfriend of Demi Moore's Molly Jensen, and he ended up being killed after he discovered some anomalies in bank accounts where he worked. Sam became a ghost between worlds because his work on Earth wasn't finished; he needed to help Molly, and he ended up using a psychic, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) to contact Molly. Swayze was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role but didn't win.
10. Sex and the City
Answer: Samantha Jones
Kim Cattrall portrayed the man-hungry Samantha Jones on the TV series "Sex and the City" and in the films based on the show. Samantha was the oldest of the four thirty-something/forty-something women who maintained a close friendship while discussing their professional and personal lives, frequently over cocktails. Samantha was a successful business woman who worked in public relations.
She had numerous relationships throughout the show, but in the final season of the show was involved in a monogamous relationship with a younger man who helped her through her treatment for breast cancer. Lindsey Gort also portrayed the character of Samantha Jones in the prequel series "The Carrie Diaries" which ran from 2013 to 2014.
