Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This franchise began with video games, including games named "Red and Blue", "Gold and Silver", and "Ruby and Sapphire". More recently it has branched into films, TV series, and card collecting games. Which series is this?

Answer: Pokémon

The Pokémon world is based on insect collecting, which creator Satoshi Tajiri enjoyed as a child. The player travels, collecting and training all the Pokémon or "Pocket Monsters" found in a particular area. The first game, "Pokémon Red and Blue" (originally "Red and Green" in Japan) was released in 1996. It had 151 Pokémon, termed Generation 1; there are now over 800 different Pokémon! The most famous is perhaps Pikachu, a small yellow electric-type Pokémon.

As well as video games, there is a Pokémon anime TV series as well as multiple films. More recently, the "Pokémon GO" app was released; this is a game that uses GPS signals so that the player can walk around in real time and find Pokémon in their cities.
2. Seth Green is the creator of the stop motion comedy series "Robot Chicken". He is known for playing Oz in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as well as providing a voice for "Family Guy". However, in which of these films did he have a role as Richie as a child?

Answer: "It" (1990)

Seth Green was born in 1974 in Philadelphia, PA. As well as playing Richie Tozier in Stephen King's horror film "It" (1990), some of his early roles include Fred in "My Stepmother Is An Alien" (1988) and Egg in "The Hotel New Hampshire" (1984). On TV, he provides the voice of Chris Griffin in "Family Guy", and further showcased his vocal talents in the stop motion sketch series "Robot Chicken", which he created with Matthew Senreich. "Robot Chicken" has won several Emmys.
3. The House of Black is a pure-blood wizarding family in the "Harry Potter" universe. One member, Sirius, is Harry's godfather, but who does the teen wizard first believe he is?

Answer: The man who betrayed his (Harry's) parents

In the third book (and film) of the series "The Prisoner of Azkaban", Harry Potter is warned against the eponymous Sirius Black, a prisoner who has escaped from wizarding jail, Azkaban. He learns that Black may want to murder him, and sees portents of impending death throughout the year in the form of a big black dog. Having sneaked from the school to Hogsmeade village on a school trip he didn't have permission for, Harry overhears a conversation about Black, including that he was a friend of Harry's parents who betrayed them to dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who then killed them. Harry later discovers that Sirius Black is actually his godfather and was framed for the murders by another friend, Peter Pettigrew.

The big black dog Harry has been seeing is actually Sirius, who is an Animagus, a wizard who can transform into an animal form.
4. Tiffany Cobb is a singer with the stage name Blu Cantrell. She collaborated with Sean Paul for her 2003 single, "Breathe", and her second album "Bittersweet" was nominated for a Grammy. Which of these genres does she make music in?

Answer: R&B

Blu Cantrell was born in 1976 in Rhode Island, USA. Her first album "So Blu" (2001) brought her success as did her second, "Bittersweet" (2003), particularly her debut single "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" which was nominated for two Grammys in 2002. Her later projects include a role in the musical "Gossip, Lies and Secrets" and a cameo in the film "Drumline" (2002).

She was the first contestant eliminated in the only series of American reality show "Celebrity Circus", which as the name suggests features celebrities performing circus acts for votes.
5. Moulin Rouge (French for "Red Windmill") is a cabaret club near the Montmartre district of Paris. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor starred in a musical film of the same name in 2001. It was directed by which of these, whose credits include a modern-day adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet"?

Answer: Baz Luhrmann

Set at the end of the 19th century, "Moulin Rouge!" tells the story of a British writer named Christian who moves to Montmartre and falls in love with a courtesan at the cabaret club of the same name. It was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, winning two: Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction.

It was directed by Australian Baz Luhrmann and is included in his so-called "Red Curtain Trilogy", along with "Strictly Ballroom" (1992) and "Romeo + Juliet" (1996).
6. There are several colours in the TV show "Orange Is The New Black"; not only the two in the title, but also the character Galina "Red" Reznikov. What is the setting of this show?

Answer: Prison

"Orange Is The New Black" (abbreviated to "OITNB") is based on the memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, who was convicted for money-laundering and spent a year in a women's federal prison. The main character is Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling), who is similarly sentenced to 15 months for smuggling money for her drug-dealing girlfriend Alex ten years previously. The show is well-known for its diverse portrayal of race and LGBT characters, including trans woman Sophia Burset, played by Laverne Cox (who is also a trans woman).

Galina "Red" Reznikov is a fellow inmate of Piper's. She is Russian and was arrested for her involvement in organised crime.
7. Which of these "colour" books was adapted as a movie that earned eleven Academy Award nominations and as a musical starring LaChanze as Celie?

Answer: The Color Purple

"The Color Purple" is a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker, published in 1982. It follows the lives of black women living in rural Georgia in the 1930s, and is frequently censored, particularly due to the violence throughout the book. Steven Spielberg directed a film version in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg as Celie and Oprah Winfrey as Sofia.

In spite of its eleven Academy Award nominations, it failed to win a single one. The musical opened on Broadway in 2005 and starred LaChanze as Celie, who also played the same role in the original production in Atlanta, Georgia.
8. The name Black Bart has been attributed to various personalities throughout history. Which of these was NOT known as Black Bart?

Answer: Kodiak bear Bart who starred in movies

The Kodiak bear Bart was simply known as Bart the Bear. Born at the Baltimore Zoo, his movie rules include "White Fang" (1991) and "Legends of the Fall" (1994). He even appeared onstage at the Academy Awards in 1998.

The others have been known by the nickname Black Bart. Rick Harris is an American wrestler who used the stage name Black Bart, given to him by fellow wrestler Dusty Rhodes. He competed in various wrestling championships.

Charles Boles was a Welsh-born Old West American outlaw. Known as a "gentleman bandit", he reportedly never fired a weapon during his robberies, and left poems at some of the scenes, which cemented his fame as Black Bart.

Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts was never actually known as Black Bart (or "Barti Ddu" in Welsh) during his lifetime. The nickname reportedly arose in a poem by Welsh poet I.D. Hooson, due to Roberts' dark complexion. One of the most successful pirates, he was killed by grapeshot in battle.
9. Which of these is a member of boyband Blue as well as an actor playing Ryan Knight in UK soap "Hollyoaks"?

Answer: Duncan James

Blue is an English boyband that has released three UK number one albums: "All Rise" (2001), "One Love" (2002), and "Guilty" (2003). Their singles include covers of Next's "Too Close" and Elton John's "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word", the latter featuring Elton on vocals. The band took a four-year hiatus before reforming in 2009 and releasing new albums.

Member Duncan James has worked on the stage and in television presenting. He joined the cast of soap opera "Hollyoaks" in 2016, playing Amy Barnes's fiancé Ryan Knight. He was nominated for a National Television Award for Best Newcomer for this role.
10. Which of these is a children's fantasy book series by Brian Jacques in which all the characters are animals?

Answer: Redwall

The "Redwall" series comprise twenty-two books, the last of which was published after author Brian Jacques's death in 2011. Many of the stories take place in an abbey of the same name, and the characters are all anthropomorphised animals. In contrast to many children's fantasy series, there is very little magic in the series, although some characters can see the future.

A television series was developed from the first three books and a film based on the series was released in 2000.
