Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Voted "best comedy film of all time" in an American Film Institute poll in 2000, which 1959 movie earned Jack Lemmon a BAFTA and a Golden Globe as well as the first of his seven Best Actor Oscar nominations?

Answer: Some Like It Hot

Directed by Billy Wilder and co-starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and George Raft, "Some Like it Hot" follows the events after two jazz musicians, saxophone player Joe (Curtis) and double-bass player (Lemmon) witness the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago.

The film earned the 34-year old Lemmon his second Oscar nomination and his first in the Best Actor category. Lemmon also won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe as well as an Oscar nomination in 1960 for "The Apartment", another Billy Wilder film, this time co-starring Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray.

He was also nominated for the 1962 Blake Edward film co-starring Lee Remick "Days of Wine and Roses" but not for one of his best-known performances as Neil Simon's Felix Unger in "The Odd Couple" with Walter Matthau in 1968.
2. Which actress, born in Indio, CA in 1968, played Brenda Barrett in "General Hospital" on and off from 1992 until 2013, Gina Kincaid in the final two seasons of "Beverly Hills 90210" and Sam Marquez between 2003 and 2008 in "Las Vegas"?

She appeared in all 106 episodes of the hit US TV Series "Las Vegas" which starred James Caan and Josh Duhamel. Answer: Kirk Douglas

Born Issur Danielovitch in Amsterdam, NY in December 1916, Kirk Douglas made his film debut in 1946. He received an honorary Oscar in 1996 to celebrate 50 years in the film industry. One of the last survivors from the "Golden Age of Film", Douglas's best-known films include "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954), "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957), "Spartacus" (1960), "Seven Days in May" (1964), "The Heroes of Telemark" (1965), and "Tough Guys" (1986). Of the alternatives, Sir Sidney Poitier was number 22 on the AFI list.

Answer: Michael Bates

Born in 1920 in the historic northern Indian city of Jhansi, which was then in the United Provinces in British India, Michael Bates starred as the first 'third man', former Royal Signals regiment corporal Cyril Blamire, in the first two season of "Last of the Summer Wine" from 1973 until 1975.

He was replaced by Foggy (played by Brian Wilde). Bates played Warrant Officer Warwick in the classic 1969 war film "The Battle of Britain", a drunken lance corporal in the musical "Oh! What a Lovely War", Field Marshall Sir Bernard Montgomery in the 1970 biopic "Patton", and as Chief Guard Barnes in "A Clockwork Orange".
5. The screen roles of which actress who was nominated three times for an Oscar include Rita Cavallini, Grusinskaya, Marguerite Gautier, Marie Walewska and Nina Yakushova?

Answer: Greta Garbo

Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden in 1905, Greta Garbo was awarded an honorary Oscar in 1954 for her "luminous and unforgettable screen performances." She played opera singer Madame Rita Cavallini in "Romance" (1930), her second "talkie" for which she earned her second Oscar nomination, the Russian ballet dancer Grusinskaya in "Grand Hotel" (1932), the socialite Marguerite Gautier in "Camille" (1936) for which she also earned an Oscar nomination, Countess Marie Walewska in "Conquest" (1937) and Nina Ivanovna 'Ninotchka' Yakushova in "Ninotchka" (1939).

The alternatives all also received multiple Best Actress Oscar nominations (Swanson three, Stanwyck and Russell four times) without winning. Deborah Kerr's record stands at six nominations without a win.
6. Two new presenters joined the BBC TV children's show "Blue Peter" in 2013, taking the total number of presenters to 37 in the show's 55-year history. Which of these four was not a presenter on the show at the end of 2013?

Answer: Zöe Salmon

Born in 1990 in the town of Bangor, on the east coast of Northern Ireland in County Down, Zoe Salmon became the 30th "Blue Peter" presenter in December 2004. Having carelessly made the on-screen comment "I'd Try Anything Once", Salmon quickly became the one tasked with trying anything dangerous or embarrassing -- wing-walking on an airborne bi-plane, being sawn in half by a magician, etc. Salmon left the show in the Summer of 2008 after three and a half years. Lancastrian Barney Harwood, who had previously presented "Basil's Swap Shop" alongside Basil Brush, took over from Joel Defries as a "Blue Peter" presenter in 2011. Lindsay Russell and Radzi Chinyanganya became the show's 36th and 37th presenters when they joined in September and October 2013 respectively.
7. Which 1971 film won five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (William Friedkin) and Best Actor (Gene Hackman), with Roy Scheider also picking up a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category?

Answer: The French Connection

Based on the 1969 non-fiction Robin Moore book "The French Connection: A True Account of Cops, Narcotics, and International Conspiracy", "The French Connection" became the first R-rated movie to win a Best Picture Oscar. The film starred Gene Hackman as Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle and Roy Scheider as Buddy 'Cloudy' Russo , a pair of New York City narcotics detectives as they tackle the world's largest heroin-smuggling syndicate.
The alternatives are three more 1970s films starring Roy Scheider ("Marathon Man") or Gene Hackman.
8. In the 1960s US TV sitcom "Get Smart", what is the first name of the title character, also known as Agent 86 and played by Don Adams?

Answer: Maxwell

Created by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry, "Get Smart" was a satire on the 'secret agent' genre of film and TV show, particularly James Bond and Inspector Clouseau. Agent 86, Maxwell Smart, was played by New York comedian/actor Don Adams, who won three Emmys in the role.

He later went on to provide the voices for the "Inspector Gadget" TV series. Fellow-CONTROL agent, Agent 99, was played by Barbara Feldon and "The Chief" was portrayed by Edward Platt. The series ran for five seasons between 1965 and 1970, first on NBC and later on CBS, with a total of 138 episodes.
9. Born in New York NY in 1927, which actor who would go on to make his name as a TV detective, earned two Best Supporting Actor nominations from his first four screen performances in 1960 and 1961?

Answer: Peter Falk

Peter Michael Falk was born into a family of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe in 1927. He developed a cancer in his right eye when he was three years old: the eye was surgically removed and the glass replacement left Falk with the quint that became his trademark. After an early screen test at 'Columbia Pictures', he was told "For the same price I can get an actor with two eyes." Despite such setbacks, Falk made his TV debut in 1957 and his his first film appearance two years later. In his second film, "Murder, Inc." in 1960, Falk's performance as Brooklyn mob hit-man Abe Reles earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. A second nomination followed a year later for another gangster flick, Frank Capra's "Pocketful of Miracles" starring Bette Davis and Glenn Ford.
Falk played TV detective Frank Columbo for 35 years from 1968 until 2003. Falk died aged 83 in 2011.
Of the alternatives are three more actors who played TV detectives: Robert Urich played Robert B. Parker's Spencer in "Spencer: for Hire" in the 1980s; New Yorker Telly Savalas played Lieutenant Theo Kojak through most of the 1970s and 1980s; and Brooklyn-born Jack Lord played Detective Captain Steve McGarrett in "Hawaii Five-0" from 1968 until 1980.
10. Which US TV series chronicled the weekly adventures of the Cartwright family between 1959 and 1973?

Answer: Bonanza

Set on the Ponderosa Ranch, between Carson City and Lake Tahoe in northern Nevada, "Bonanza" debuted on NBC in September 1959 and ran for 14 seasons and 430 episodes until January 1973. The series starred Lorne Greene as thrice-widowed family patriarch Ben Cartwright and his three sons.

The eldest son, architect Adam, son of an English mother, was played by Pernell Roberts who would go on to play chief surgeon Dr. John McIntyre, the title character in "Trapper John, M.D." in the 1980s. The middle son was the loveable giant nicknamed 'Hoss' (real name Eric), the son of Ben's former Swedish wife, was played by Korean War veteran Dan Blocker.

The youngest Cartwright brother, the hot-headed Little Joe, the son of Ben's French Creole third wife, was played by Michael Landon who later starred in " Little House on the Prairie".
