Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Hal Jordan aka 'Green Lantern' in the 2011 film of the same name?

Answer: Ryan Reynolds

Several superheroes have fought evil under the name of Green Lantern, having been chosen by a magic ring, and Hal Jordan - played by Ryan Reynolds - is the Green Lantern who appears in the 2011 film. He is a test pilot and a member of the Justice League.

The ring enables him to fly, creates energy swords and shields, and is powered by Jordan's imagination and willpower. The film also featured Peter Saarsgaard as the mad scientist Hector Hammond, and Mark Strong, Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clarke Duncan as fellow Green Lantern Corps members Sinestro, Tomar-Re and Kilowog.
2. Which 'green' musicians released their third album, 'Dookie', in 1994?

Answer: Green Day

Green Day are singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool. 'Dookie', their breakthrough album, won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 1995 and features the singles 'Longview' and 'Basket Case', a rock club favourite.

Some fans criticised them for 'selling out' by signing to a major label. They later went on to release the concept album 'American Idiot', which was later made into a musical.
3. In which fictional country would you find the Emerald City?

Answer: Oz

The Emerald City appears in 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Return to Oz', where it has fallen into disarray. To get to the Emerald City, as the song suggests, you have to follow the Yellow Brick Road. In the first 'Oz' book by L Frank Baum, the Emerald City is not actually green, besides its walls, but looks that way because the citizens wear green-tinted glasses; however, in later books, it is described as being built of emeralds and green glass. Dorothy also sees green items being sold in shops.

In 'Return to Oz', citizens of Oz - including the Scarecrow - are turned into green objects by the Nome King, and Dorothy has to change them back by touching them and saying 'Oz'.
4. 'Pretty Cure' is a Japanese magical girl anime franchise that has been running for several years, and features a different team of magical girls, or Pretty Cures, each season. Each team is led by a pink Pretty Cure, and the other members all wear different colours too. Which of these characters is a green Pretty Cure?

Answer: Cure Mint

Cure Mint is one of the team from 'Yes! Pretty Cure 5', and the first green Pretty Cure. Her real name is Komachi Akimoto, and she has the ability to create barriers. Her parents own a sweet shop named after her. She is shy and quiet, and an aspiring writer. Other green Pretty Cures - and there aren't many! - include Cure March, known as 'Glitter Spring' in the English dub, who has wind powers and appears in 'Smile Pretty Cure!'; Cure Felice, a fairy with flower-related powers, in 'Witchy Pretty Cure!'; and Cure Parfait, a fairy magical girl with a pegasus theme, in 'KiraKira Pretty Cure'.

Cure Beauty, Cure Mermaid and Cure Ange are all blue Pretty Cures, and appear in 'Smile Pretty Cure!', 'Go! Princess Pretty Cure' and 'Hugtto! Pretty Cure' respectively.
5. You might have heard of the film 'How Green Was My Valley', which starred Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O'Hara, but do you know who wrote the book?

Answer: Richard Llewellyn

Richard Llewellyn, real name Richard Dafydd Vivian Llewellyn Lloyd, was born in England to Welsh parents, despite claiming to be Welsh and having based 'How Green Was My Valley' on his own experiences. 'How Green Was My Valley' was published in 1939 and tells the story of Huw Morgan, played by Roddy McDowall in the film, who comes from a mining family from the Welsh Valleys.

His brother and father both die in mining accidents, while his sister Angharad (Maureen O'Hara) falls in love with the preacher Mr Gruffydd (Walter Pidgeon), but ends up marrying Iestyn Evans (Marten Lamont) instead, despite not loving him.
6. Which 'green' singer sang 'Take Me to the River' and 'Let's Stay Together'?

Answer: Al Green

The American soul singer Al Green, born Albert Greene, started out performing in a group with his brothers, known as the Greene Brothers; like many great R'n'B and soul singers, his roots lie in gospel. His religious father kicked him out of the Greene Brothers for listening to the secular music of Jackie Wilson.

He was discovered by producer Willie Mitchell while singing with the Soul Mates, and changed his name to Green. He released 'Let's Stay Together' in 1972, which became his biggest hit. Other signature songs include 'Take Me to the River' and 'Tired of Being Alone'.

In 1976, after his girlfriend committed suicide, he became ordained as a minister, known as the Reverend Al Green, and briefly focused solely on gospel music, before going back to secular music with the duet 'Put a Little Love in Your Heart' with Annie Lennox in 1988.
7. Jade is a shade of green. Jade Thirlwall is a member of which British girl group?

Answer: Little Mix

Little Mix were put together on 'The X Factor', and were the first girl group to win the competition. As well as Jade Thirlwall, their other members are Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards. They were originally called Rhythmix, but changed their name to Little Mix after discovering a Brighton-based children's music charity had already claimed the name. Their debut single, a cover of Damien Rice's 'Cannonball', went straight to Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 2011.

Thirlwall is from South Shields. She originally auditioned for 'The X Factor' solo in 2008 and 2010, but was rejected both times.
8. Which of the Care Bears was green and had a shamrock on his chest?

Answer: Good Luck Bear

Good Luck Bear had a shamrock, aka a four-leafed clover, on his belly, and was one of the ten original Care Bear characters. He represents spreading good luck, and the leaves on the clover are shaped like hearts. In the first TV series, he had an Irish accent, though this did not apply to later series.

Other green Care Bears include Wish Bear, Bashful Heart Bear, Thanks-A-Lot Bear and Oopsy Bear. The Care Bear Cousins also have a green member, Gentle Heart Lamb.
9. Which Cockney actor, also known for appearing on Blur's single 'Parklife', starred in the musical movie 'Billy the Kid and the Green Baize Vampire'?

Answer: Phil Daniels

Yes, this film really exists - an ex-boyfriend introduced me to it! It's about a young snooker player nicknamed Billy the Kid, played by Phil Daniels of 'Quadrophenia' fame. The 'Green Baize Vampire' of the title is Maxwell Randall (Alun Armstrong), the reigning world champion, nicknamed for his vampiric appearance. The two compete each other after The One, Billy the Kid's manager, gets into debt trouble with the Wednesday Man, a loan shark. The Wednesday Man offers to cancel The One's debt if he can arrange a snooker match between Billy and Randall. The loser will never be able to play professional snooker again. Unbeknown to Billy and The One, the Wednesday Man is in league with Randall. However, Billy wins the match in the end.

Blur fans may remember Phil Daniels as the man talking on 'Parklife'.
10. 'The Light Is Always Green' is a title of a song by the Housemartins, a British indie band. Which two members went on to form the Beautiful South?

Answer: Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway

'The Light Is Always Green' appeared on the Housemartins' second album 'The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death'. After the band split up, singer Paul Heaton and drummer/singer Dave Hemingway formed the Beautiful South, which also featured their friend Dave Rotheray on guitar, former Housemartins roadie Sean Welch on bass, and Dave Stead on drums.

They also had three successive female vocalists, Brianna Corrigan, Jacqui Abbott - who was in the band during their most successful period, and who sings on 'Rotterdam' and 'Perfect 10' - and Alison Wheeler.

Heaton and Abbott later went on to perform as a duo. (As for Norman Cook, you might know him as the DJ Fatboy Slim.)
