The actual birth name of Batgirl is unknown because she does not know who her real parents are. She was given the name Cassandra Cain by the man who raised and trained her from birth, David Cain, and goes by this name today.

It is still unknown exactly how David Cain came into Cassandra's life, all that is known is that she was only a baby. Cain trained her to be the great fighter she is today.

Batgirl fights crime on her own, and with Batman and his crew, in Gotham City. There have been rumors that she will be getting her own city to protect. I am hoping against it because I think she just works too well with other characters in Gotham.

Batgirl barely speaks any language, since David Cain never taught her to speak. The only laungauage she knew was body language, in combat situations. It is believed that is the core of her tremendous skills. Not until semi-recently, and a chance encounter with a telepathic, has Batgirl gained the ability to speak English. She seems to be getting better, but has a long way to go.

Cain raised Cassandra to be a partner for him, and eventual heir to his assassination legacy. On her very first assignment, at a very early age, she succeed with great success. However, she knew right away that what she had done was wrong and has vowed never to do it again.

Batgirl defeated Shiva in an all out brawl in "Batgirl" # 25. No one had defeated her up to that point, not even Batman.

In return for restoring Batgirl's fighting ability, Shiva demanded that the two square off in an all out death dual. The original fight did not last long with Shiva actually killing Batgirl! Shiva then revived her, fullfilling Batgirl's Death Wish (it is a long story - read the series for full details) and the two squared off again with Batgirl getting the win.

Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl, was forced to retire after being paralyzed by the Joker (see "The Killing Joke" graphic novel for that great tale by Alan Moore). She later assumed the guise of Oracle and was in favor of Cassandra becoming the new Batgirl. Cassandra has even lived with Barbara for a time.

Batgirl is awesome, but I don't think she could survive a 40 foot fall. One of the all time best Batgirl moments takes place in the very first issue of "Batgirl" where she and Batman are training. Batman asks her to attack him, she makes what looks like a pathetic attempt, but has done something to make Batman cough up blood and not even seen the move that did it.
