Answer: Dog in the Manger

"Dog in the Manger" is by Mike Resnick, but is one of his "Eli Paxton" mysteries.
It was first published in 1995.
The "Galactic Midway" series started with "Sideshow" (1982), and followed with "The Three-Legged Hootch Dancer" "Wild Alien Tamer", and "The Best Rootin' Tootin' Shootin' Gunslinger in the Whole Damned Galaxy", which were all published in 1983.
2. Ben Tennyson is a human boy who uses the alien technology Omnitrix to turn into various species of extraterrestrial. Who made the Omnitrix?

Answer: Azmuth

Azmuth is a Galvan; they have grey skin and are about five inches tall. Galvan technology is famous throughout the galaxy, and they even made themselves a new planet after their original Homeworld, Galvan Prime, was destroyed in a war.
The original animated "Ben 10" series was originally shown on the Cartoon Network channel in the USA, in 2005, and has since been shown in many different countries worldwide.
3. In "The Day the Earth Stood Still", alien Klaatu arrived to try and persuade humanity to give up all war and violence. With him was his guardian robot; what was its name?

Answer: Gort

The 1951 film starred Michael Rennie as Klaatu, and was directed by Robert Wise. A remake was released in 2008, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Keanu Reeves.
Both films were based on an original short story from 1940, written by Harry Bates and called "Farewell to the Master".
Although in 1951 Klaatu came to warn humanity away from war and the threat of atomic weapons, and in 2008 his object was to end environmental damage and pollution, in both cases it was made plain that if mankind did not "clean up their act," then earth would be destroyed by the alien races observing us from space.
4. Ch'p was a member of the Green Lantern Patrol, and successfully helped defend his homeworld H'Lven from an invasion. The invaders were the evil Crabsters; who was their fearsome Leader?

Answer: Doctor Ub'x

Ch'p, who resembled a sort of squirrel or chipmunk type creature, made his first appearance in the DC Comics issue number 203 of "Green Lantern Corps".
In later issues, he and Doctor Ub'x met up again, and through a bizarre twist of circumstance became friends of a sort, as they were among the very few people who could actually remember that Ch'p was alive and a Green Lantern.
Ch'p's signature move was his devastating Acorn Attack.
5. When he originally appeared in a comic book, he was known as The Ultimate, and later found fame as "the alien who killed Superman" - who is this villainous extraterrestrial?

Answer: Doomsday

The story of Superman's death at the hands of Doomsday (and his subsequent return to life!) covered several issues of DC Comics "Superman" title.
The actual battle to the death between the two took place in "Superman Volume 2" Issue number 75, published in 1992.
The "Death of Superman" storyline proved to be extremely popular with fans, and a spin off film and video game were both released to cash in on the popularity.
6. The "Smash Martians" were a family of small metal robots who observed earthlings making mashed potato laboriously by hand, and then laughed at them for not knowing about "Smash" brand instant mashed potato. Shown in the 1970s and '80s, what was the iconic slogan that accompanied the Martian's merriment?

Answer: For mash get smash

The Martians appeared in a whole series of adverts for "Smash" and to this day, they are regularly voted among the most popular advertising characters of all time in the UK. They were also named by "Campaign" magazine as the UK's "Best TV advert of the 20th Century".
Originally made by Cadbury, the "Smash" brand is now made and marketed by Premier Foods.
7. In the film "Species" (1995), scientists use information received from an extraterrestrial source to create a female whose DNA contains both alien and human genes. What is her name?

Answer: Sil

The half human, half alien Sil was played by Natasha Henstridge in "Species", and she also appeared in the sequels "Species II" (1998) and "Species III" (2004). The three films of the series were directed by Brad Turner, Peter Medak, and Brad Turner respectively.
8. Jeff Wayne's classic "War of the Worlds" double album, telling the story of a Martian invasion of earth, is one of the best selling records of all time, and was number one on the album charts of more than twenty countries when it was released in 1978. Who sang the role of Parson Nathaniel?

Answer: Phil Lynott

The music retells the story from H. G. Wells' book of the same name, which was first published in 1898.
As well as the vocal talent of Phil Lynott, it also featured Richard Burton as the Journalist, and Julie Covington as the Parson's wife.
9. Way back in the 1960s, the Justice League of America fought their first alien enemy. Which of these fearsome foes did they fight?

Answer: Starro the Star Conqueror

Starro, a giant starfish with a huge central eye, could take control of the mind of a human by spitting one of his tiny starfishy mini-starros at them. It would then attach itself to the host and form a connection with Starro.
Starro made his first comic book appearance in issue number twenty eight of "The Brave and the Bold", published by DC Comics in 1960.
As well as Starro's debut, that particular comic was the Justice League's first outing too.
10. Produced and directed by Giorgio A. Tsoukalos and Kevin Burns, and premiered in 2010 on the History Channel, this television show purports to explain how aliens have been visitors to earth, and communicated with humans, for thousands of years. Which show is this?

Answer: Ancient Aliens

Although the show is presented as a documentary, and treats all its subject matter seriously, it is heavily criticised by the scientific establishment who deny there is any truth in the various "alien forerunners" and "visitors" claims.
The fifth series began in late 2012, after the show proved to be very popular with the viewers.
