Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Popeye" cartoons there is a character that exhibits teleportation abilities. This character can de-materialize from one location and reappear in another. Additionally, this cartoon figure only eats orchids. Who or what is it?

Answer: Eugene the Jeep

Eugene the Jeep was supposedly a gift from Africa given to Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl. He is a "fourth dimensional" creature. Although about dog-size he has a bear-like head and ears, a sizable nose, and a formidable tail. He can only say the word "Jeep".

In the cartoon episodes any attempts by Popeye to put Eugene out of the house for the night were always thwarted as the impish being would simply re-materialize indoors. The Sea Hag was a witch and enemy of Popeye. George Geezil was a black clad, bearded character who disliked Wimpy and his hamburger scam. Alice the Goon was a giant who guarded The Sea Hag.
2. On an episode of "The Jetsons" George allows "his boy Elroy" to go on a school field trip to the far reaches of the galaxy. There Elroy thinks he has found a "rock" on an asteroid. Who did he actually find?

Answer: Orbitty

Orbitty eventually became the second pet of the family, overcoming pet dog Astro's initial resistance. He hatched out of the pink rock that Elroy found which was actually an egg. Orbitty is a character that has legs made of springs. This cartoon oddity is much like the old "mood ring" in that his color varies as his emotions change. Rosie is the Jetson's robotic maid. Uniblab was, for a time, George's robot supervisor.
3. In the cartoon series "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" Shaggy was a companion of Scooby-Do in all the mystery-solving episodes. But Shaggy had a more formal name given to him by his Hanna-Barbera creators. What was it?

Answer: Norville Rogers

Instead of using his real first name the "Shaggy" moniker was probably the better choice. Fred Jones is another mystery solving sleuth on the series. Bronson Stone is the sheriff on "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated". Brad Chiles is the father of Fred Jones.
4. There is a character who arrived from the future on "The Flintstones" who is initially pretty upset to be back in time in "stone-age" Bedrock. Who is it?

Answer: The Great Gazoo

The Great Gazoo is from the planet Zetox. The only two people that can see him are Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble. He helps them both out when they are in trouble but calls them both "dum-dums". Gazoo was banished to earth and back in time from his home planet because he had created a very destructive weapon.

As you would expect of a space alien The Great Gazoo is green. Arnold is the Flintstones' paper boy. Joe Rockhead is a friend of Fred and Barney. Pearl Slaghoople is Fred's mother-in-law.
5. The "Captain Kangaroo" show featured an animated series called "Tom Terrific". Who was Tom's nemesis in the cartoon?

Answer: Crabby Appleton

Crabby Appleton wanted everyone in the world to be unhappy. He even sang a song about it. This was at odds with Tom Terrific's world of living in a treehouse and becoming anything he wanted to be by using his "magical thinking cap". Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog was Tom's partner. Lariat Sam was another Terrytoons cartoon. Gene Deitch was the creator of the "Tom Terrific" animated series.
6. Space Ghost was a super-hero who fought criminals in outer space when his animated series began on television in 1966. What was the name of the group of six super villains who teamed up to try and do away with Space Ghost?

Answer: Council of Doom

This group of humanoids, monsters, and otherwise nasty creatures included Brak, Creature King, Metallus, Moltar, Spider Woman and Zorak. Space Ghost thwarted their murderous efforts with his attributes of teleportation, invisibility, and energy powers.
7. "Clutch Cargo" was a cartoon series that began in 1959. It was an adventure series that saw Clutch go world-wide on perilous missions. There was something visibly unique about this animated program. What was it?

Answer: The characters had real human mouths

The series employed a "Syncro-Vox" optical printing system. This allowed real live-action human lips to be used with the animation. This same system allowed for the use of real smoke in scenes with explosions and bubble gum "bubbles" were represented by real balloons.
8. The "Jonny Quest" television series began in 1964. A famous "Animal House" movie actor was Jonny's voice. Who was it?

Answer: Tim Matheson

In addition to being Jonny's voice Mr. Matheson was also the voice of Jace in the first "Space Ghost" animated series. He played Eric "Otter" Stratton in the "Animal House" movie. Jonny Quest and his family and their bodyguard were always investigating strange goings on worldwide and battling villains.
9. The "Huckleberry Hound Show" was a syndicated animated program that began in 1958. Huckleberry was known to sing a certain song as he ambled along in his cartoons. What song was it?

Answer: Oh My Darling, Clementine

"Oh My Darling, Clementine" is an American folk ballad written in 1884. The "Huckleberry Hound Show" was sponsored by Kellogg's Cereals. Huck's show was the first series with full animation that was just made for television."Huck" Hound is a blue dog that walks upright.

He has a very gentle disposition. He talks in a Southern accent. He always had trouble performing different jobs in his cartoons. By the end of each program he usually got things figured out and was successful at his tasks.
10. With the success of the "Huckleberry Hound" series the "Quick Draw McGraw" cartoon program began shortly after on television. Some of the cartoons featured Quick Draw as a "Zorro-like" character. Who was this alter-ego?

Answer: El Kabong

As this masked alternate personality Quick Draw would fight his enemies by swinging down on them via a rope. He would then shout out "OLAYYYYEEEE!" and then conk them on the head with a guitar or "kabonger". Baba-Looey was Quick Draw's sidekick. Doggy Daddy and Augie Doggy were other characters on the show. Doggy Daddy was Augie Doggy's "dear old dad".
