Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'The Powerpuff Girls' tells the story of three sisters in the fictional city of Townsville. Which of the following is NOT one of the titular heroines?

Answer: Blueberry

'The Powerpuff Girls' first aired on the Cartoon Network in 1998, running for six seasons that totalled 78 episodes. The show draws much of its entertainment value from the juxtaposition of dangerous and difficult fighting of bad guys with the everyday troubles of a young girl, such as going to school and trying to make friends. The show was rebooted by Cartoon Network in 2016.
2. The 2015 film 'The Danish Girl' starred Eddie Redmayne in a role that saw him nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. Which brave woman, one of the first recipients of gender reassignment surgery, did he portray?

Answer: Lili Elbe

The film 'The Danish Girl' is not completely true to the life of Lili Elbe, and is actually based on a fictional novel of the same name by American author David Ebershoff (that was itself based on her story). Lili Elbe made the transition from male to female in 1930, but sadly died only a year later from complications following a subsequent round of surgery.

Her autobiography, entitled 'Man Into Woman', was published several years after her death.
3. In 1965, The Beach Boys told us that "East coast girls are hip", but to which US state did they seemingly want all of the girls in America to move?

Answer: California

'California Girls' was the second single from the Beach Boys 1965 album 'Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)', following the first single, 'Help Me, Rhonda', which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite not making it to number one at the time, 'California Girls' has proved to be one of The Beach Boys most enduring hits, reaching number 72 on the list of '500 Greatest Songs of All Time' released by 'Rolling Stone' magazine in 2011.
4. Which group, with members including 'Sporty', 'Baby' and 'Scary', broke several records with the release of their self-titled debut album in 1996?

Answer: Spice Girls

Their debut album, 'Spice', sold 31 million copies, becoming the best-selling album by a female group of all time. It contained the singles 'Wannabe' and '2 Become 1', both of which reached number one in the charts in the United Kingdom, as well as in many other countries around the world.

Their follow-up album 'Spiceworld' was also phenomenally successful, reaching number one in 13 countries worldwide.
5. Originally a novel by American author Gillian Flynn, in which 2014 film does Rosamund Pike play a woman who seems to just disappear?

Answer: Gone Girl

'Gone Girl' was directed by American director David Fincher, who is also known for films such as 'Seven', 'Fight Club' and 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. The story is a psychological thriller that begins when Ben Affleck's character Nick returns home on his fifth wedding anniversary to find that his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) has disappeared. Traces of blood are soon found on their kitchen floor, and Nick is arrested on suspicion of murder.
6. Following the lives of four young women in New York City, 'Girls' was first aired on HBO in 2012. Which writer and director created the show, with many of the scenarios based on experiences in her own life?

Answer: Lena Dunham

'Girls' has received significant praise, with many critics citing the way in which Dunham realistically portrays 21st Century women and their relationships. The show won 'Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical' at the 2013 Golden Globes and has been nominated for a host of other awards.

In 2014, Lena Dunham released an autobiography entitled 'Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned"'.
7. One of the main singles from his third album 'Divide', from which city does the girl who "played the fiddle in an Irish band" come, in an Ed Sheeran song?

Answer: Galway

Having released music on his own label since 2005, Ed Sheeran released his first major label album, 'Plus', on Atlantic Records in 2011. Since then he has become one of the most successful pop stars on the planet, with his second and third albums, 'Multiply' and 'Divide' reaching number one both in the UK and the US. 'Galway Girl' was both written and recorded jointly between Sheeran and Irish folk band Beoga.
8. Which adjective did Romanian singers Gabriela and Monica Irimia use to describe themselves when they appeared on British reality TV show 'Popstars: The Rivals' in 2002?

Answer: Cheeky

The Cheeky Girls auditioned on both 'Model Behaviour' and 'Popstars: The Rivals' in 2002. Despite not making a fantastic impression on judges Pete Waterman and Louis Walsh they were able to secure a record deal with British record label Multiply, a subsidiary of Telstar Records.

They are perhaps best known for the song 'Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)', which peaked at number two in the UK charts.
9. Which actress, also known for her musical work in the duo She & Him, plays the title role in the TV sitcom 'New Girl'?

Answer: Zooey Deschanel

'New Girl' tells the story of Zooey Deschanel's character Jess, who leaves her boyfriend after finding him with another woman. Desperate to find somewhere to live, she looks on Craigslist and ends up moving into a top floor apartment ('The Loft') with three men she doesn't know - Schmidt, Winston and Nick.

She & Him consists of Deschanel and American singer-songwriter M. Ward. They have released several studio albums, including the inventively-titled 'Volume One' and 'Volume Two'.
10. Featuring high school stereotypes like 'band geeks', 'jocks' and 'cheerleaders', which 2003 film depicts Lindsay Lohan's character Cady Heron trying to fit in with the 'plastics'?

Answer: Mean Girls

As her parents do a lot of travelling around the world, Cady Heron has been home-schooled for most of her childhood. When she arrives at high school, several cliques try to induct her as a member, including the dreaded 'plastics'. The screenplay for the film was written by American comedian Tina Fey, who is perhaps better known for her work on 'Saturday Night Live'.
