Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On January 19, 1991 the WWF presented its annual "Royal Rumble" event which as usual had some under card matches. One bout featured The Big Boss Man against The Barbarian in a continuation of the Boss Man/Bobby Heenan feud. How did Heenan ignite this war?

Answer: Heenan continually made jokes about The Boss Man's mother

The feud began in the fall of 1990 when Heenan in his role as a color commentator would continually make insensitive remarks about The Boss Man's mother. This had originally been meant to start a feud with The Boss Man and Rick Rude but Rude left the company in November 1990. The wheels were already in motion so it became Heenan and his "Heenan Family" against the popular Georgia Lawman.
2. A tradition at the "Royal Rumble" is that one wrestler usually puts on a gusty performance in terms of longevity. Which entrant lasted the longest at the 1991 event?

Answer: Rick Martel

This particular year there were several impressive performances including ones by The British Bulldog, The Texas Tornado, Bret Hart, Greg Valentine, Crush and a young grappler by the name of Shane Douglas. Rick "The Model" Martel took the cake lasting an incredible fifty two minutes and seventeen seconds. Good Job, Rick!
3. There is always a first time for everything and the 1991 "Royal Rumble" was the first time that an entrant had completely no showed for his slotted time spot. Which wrestler was absent from the match?

Answer: Randy Savage

Earlier on in the event Savage's interference had cost the Ultimate Warrior the WWF Heavyweight Title against the hated Sgt. Slaughter. When no entrant showed up for the 18th time slot, it unclear which star had vanished because the match was still ongoing. Once the match had concluded it was easy to pinpoint that Savage had drawn number 18 and no showed.

It was assumed he and his "Queen" Sherri had fled the arena to escape the wrath of The Ultimate Warrior.
4. In early 1991 Virgil, the longtime bodyguard and manservant for Ted Dibiase declared independence from his abusive employer. Which veteran star lost to Virgil in a televised bout giving him one of his first major wins?

Answer: Haku

Immediately after severing his ties with Dibiase Virgil began to be mentored by "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. In preparation for Virgil's "Wrestlemania VII" match against Ted Dibiase, Piper arranged for a match against the sage veteran Haku. Virgil was able to win this contest thus solidifying Piper's confidence in him.
5. On March 24, 1991, "Wrestlemania VII" took place with the very first match of the night being Haku and The Barbarian against The Rockers. What star did not wrestle on this card but instead was a color commentator for this opening contest?

Answer: Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Hacksaw Jim Duggan who some reason or not was left off the card joined the late, great Gorilla Monsoon at the announcer's desk for the match between The Rockers and The Barbarian and Haku. Interesting fact this was one of the few times that Haku wrestled with The Barbarian in the WWF as a tag team. In the late 1990s in WCW, they comprised a team called "The Faces of Fear".
6. In another tag team match at "Wrestlemania VII" The Legion of Doom, Animal and Hawk, annihilated Paul Roma and Hercules Hernandez aka Power & Glory in just 59 seconds. This match was purposely kept short, why?

Answer: Paul Roma had been injured

Just days before "Wrestlemania VII" Paul Roma suffered an injury and wanted to back out of the match. Vince McMahon said under other circumstances he would agree but not at "Wrestlemania". In order to protect Roma, the contest was turned in an utter squash which literally destroyed Hercules and Roma's credibility. Before that night Power and Glory had been one of the premiere duos on the roster however they never really recovered from this embarrassing loss.
7. This is a hard one. The main event of "Wrestlemania VII" saw Hulk Hogan win his third WWF Heavyweight Title by defeating Srg. Slaughter. If you pay careful attention to this match you see Hogan doing something. What is it?

Answer: Hogan cuts his forehead so he can bleed

"Blading" is the wrestling business term used when a wrestler uses a small razor or other concealed object to cut themselves in order to produce blood. About midway through the bout Hogan is on the canvas and you an see him nick himself in the forehead.

He then leaves the razor on the mat and the referee, one of the Hebner brothers, picks it up and puts it in his pocket. When Slaughter picks Hulk up from the canvas, surprise, he is bleeding!
8. The April 27, 1991 edition of "Saturday Nights Main Event" saw the newly crowned WWF Tag Team Champions, the Nasty Boys, defend their belts. Who were the opponents?

Answer: The Bushwhackers

In the lone segment of SNME to air during the entire year of 1991 The Nasty Boys successfully defended the WWF Tag Team Titles against the bizarre Bushwhackers. You could tell that wrestling as a whole was on the decline at this point. Just two years before "Saturday Nights Main Event" had been broadcast four times now it was only once.
9. The popular Tugboat completed a heel turn by betraying The Bushwhackers in a Six Man Tag Team Match. Tugboat quickly took on manager Jimmy Hart and formed a tag team with The Earthquake. What new name did he adopt?

Answer: Typhoon

Taking the moniker of Typhoon, veteran Fred Ottman joined forces with the late John Tenta aka The Earthquake as a duo called "The Natural Disasters". That fall they began feuding with The Legion of Doom for The WWF Tag Team Titles. The following year they made a face turn and eventually did win The WWF Tag Team Titles from Ted Dibiase and Irwin R Shyster.
10. In the spring of 1991 Bobby "The Brain" Heenan retired from managing and sold the contract of the reigning WWF Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect to a newcomer called "The Coach". What veteran portrayed the character of "The Coach" during the spring and summer of 1991?

Answer: John Tolos

"The Coach" was actually veteran wrestler John Tolos who made a name for himself wrestling with his brother Chris in the 1960s and 1970s. "The Coach" also served as the manager for The Beverly Brothers during his short tenure. The gimmick for Tolos character was just that of an actual High School/Collegiate Coach.

He wore a ball cap, a sweatshirt, had a whistle and carried a clipboard. John Tolos was a very savvy ring veteran so it is a shame in way that "The Coach" never got over in The WWF.
11. In August 1991, weekly vignettes began to air with Bobby Heenan holding a video distorted title belt which he claimed belonged to the "Real World's Champion". Of course this was meant to hype the debut of Ric Flair. Why was he called "The Real World's Champion"?

Answer: All of these

After the simmering feud between Ric Flair and the inept Jim Herd came to a head, Flair departed WCW in July 1991 still in possession of The Heavyweight Title Belt. Flair refused to drop the belt to Lex Luger who eventually defeated Barry Windham in a match for the vacant strap on July 14, 1991. "The Real World's Champion" was a slap in the face of WCW that Flair had never been beat.
Also during the height of Hulk Hogan's popularity in mid and late 1980's many felt that despite his charisma, Ric Flair, then The NWA Champion, was the better wrestler. So once again "Real World's Champion"
Finally instant heat is wrestling lingo meaning that the fans already hate a performer before he even debuts. If you called yourself "Real World's Champion" I think many fans would probably dislike you.
12. On August 26, 1991 in Madison Square Garden, the WWF presented "SummerSlam'91". One of the bouts was a six man tag team match which featured Paul Roma, Hercules Hernandez and The Warlord on one side. Who were their opponents?

Answer: The Dragon, The British Bulldog and The Texas Tornado

Roma, Hernandez and The Warlord really had their work cut out for them as they faced the formidable trio of The Dragon, The British Bulldog and The Texas Tornado. For some reason or other Ricky Steamboat was referred to as simply "The Dragon" during his brief stint in 1991.

Interesting fact The British Bulldog would win the WWF Intercontinental Title the next year making all three members of that team former or future Intercontinental Champs.
13. When Ric Flair finally made his debut in September his first feud was not with Hulk Hogan but rather longtime friend/rival "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. The two had a wild televised brawl during which Piper attempted to hit Flair with a chair and missed. Who did Piper knock out instead?

Answer: Vince McMahon

For some time Piper had been doing color commentating on weekly telecasts alongside Vince McMahon in addition to wrestling. Flair wanted to make Piper his stepping stone and immediately began to provoke him. Piper tried to maintain his cool but his temper got the best of him and he grabbed a chair. Piper took a wild swing and ended up knocking Vince McMahon out like a light.
14. On November 27, 1991, the WWF presented the fifth annual "Survivor Series" which actually saw one contest contested as a three on three elimination bout. The WWF Tag Team Champions, The Legion of Doom and The Big Boss Man battled Irwin R. Shyster and The Natural Disasters. Which two wrestlers were originally supposed to be the fourth man on each team?

Answer: Sid Justice and Jake Roberts

The bout was originally intended to be Roberts, Shyster and The Natural Disasters against Sid Justice, Boss Man and The LOD. Just days before the match Roberts unleashed his pet snake "Lucifer" on Randy Savage letting him actually bite on his arm. Then WWF President Jack Tunney immediately suspended Roberts which meant he couldn't wrestle in that match. Sid Justice had also suffered an injury and was unable to compete. For the life of me I just do not know why the powers that be did not just let Savage take Sid's spot in the match.
15. In February 1991, one of the most eccentric stars ever to compete in the WWF made his debut. Wearing a horned helmet, carrying a sword and shield, sporting furry boots this man looked like something right out of Norse mythology. Before becoming The Berzerker he briefly used another name. What was it?

Answer: The Viking

When the AWA closed its doors in January 1991, many of its stars were forced to look for employment elsewhere. Veteran AWA star John Nord came to the WWF originally dubbed as "The Viking" which lasted only for a few weeks. The name was quickly changed to "The Berzerker" but Nord maintained the same gimmick, eventually taking on Mr. Fuji as a manager. John Nord, The Beverly Brothers, Curtis Hughes, The Patriot and the late Yokozuna were all AWA castaways that eventually ended up in The WWF or WCW.
