Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the rather effeminate name of the chocolate eating dragon in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series?

Answer: Dulcy

Dulcy's background appears to differ slightly between the comic books and the television cartoon series. Her full name is Dulcinea and she is the last of the protector dragons. As such her powers are a fair deal greater than those of normal dragons and some say they can even rival those of Sonic.

The only problem is that Dulcy is inexperienced and cannot use them properly, which makes for all sorts of comical opportunities. As an example, because she struggles to land properly she has taken to wearing kneepads. Dulcy can be ditzy, gets disorientated, has a soft spot for the colour purple and has no ability to resist chocolate.
2. Rick "The Dragon" Steamboat was a professional wrestler who remained a "babyface" throughout his career. In professional wrestling circles what is a "babyface"?

Answer: An heroic persona

A babyface is sometimes referred to as a blue eyed boy or, as in Lucha libre, a technico. These characters tend to follow the rules, be polite to referees and draw the cheers from the crowds. Most bouts will engineer a stoush between a babyface and a villain (or heel). Rick Steamboat commenced his career in 1976 with the American Wrestling Association.

In 1985 he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and, at the same time, took on his persona as "The Dragon". He got rid of his trunks and jacket and replaced them with a keikogi, a martial arts training uniform, and long tights.

He is fondly remembered in wrestling circles for a number of fueds he'd maintained in the ring, in particular stoushes with Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Ric Flair.

In 2009 he was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame.
3. The game of mah-jong carries three types of dragon tiles, which of the following is *NOT* one of them?

Answer: Black

The dragon tiles are one of two sets of honour tiles, the other being the wind tiles. Unlike the suited tiles honour tiles do not possess any suits or ranks. The dragons are representative of the three forms of life - animals (including humans) are under the banner of the red dragon, plants are represented by the green dragon and the spiritual world is the domain of the white dragon.
4. Australian rock band Dragon appeared to be "havana" a good time on which of their hits in 1977?

Answer: April Sun in Cuba

Dragon first formed in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1972 before venturing "across the ditch" in 1975 to settle in Sydney, Australia. Their breakthrough hit was "This Time" which listed on the Australian ARIA charts in 1976. "April Sun in Cuba" peaked on the same charts at number two the following year and consolidated Dragon's position as one of the country's premier rock acts at the time.

Unfortunately, controversy, drug use and the deaths of three members in separate incidents dogged the band, forcing them into numerous line up changes and comebacks.

Their status as icons of Australian music was confirmed in July, 2008 when they were inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame.
5. The Generating Company is an international touring circus that appeared on which BBC reality television show in an effort to raise capital?

Answer: Dragon's Den

"Dragon's Den" was produced by the BBC Manchester and was based on an original concept that was created in Japan called "Tiger of Money". The programme introduces contestants who have a business idea that has some potential or have an existing business operation that is in need of an injection of funds to a panel of wealthy business people to plead their case. Should these wealthy entrepreneurs (called the dragons) like what they hear they may choose to invest in the project for an equity share. The Generating Company was created in 1998 to put together an act for the UK's Millennium Experience to welcome in the new millennium.

After the event twenty of the performers remained with the founder, Paul Cockie, with the view to create some touring opportunities.

They appeared on "Dragon's Den" in December of 2005 and were successful in securing 160,000 pounds of funding from Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis in exchange for a forty percent share in the circus.
6. Which shoe manufacturer, identified by its distinctive three stripes marking, has re-launched its Dragon brand of training shoes, that were popular in the 1970s, with a new range of fashionable colours?

Answer: Adidas

In the 1970s the Dragon range was released primary as an all purpose trainer rather than a purpose built shoe for distance runners or serious joggers. Lightweight, it is a suede and mesh shoe that has been resurrected as everyday "all purpose" footwear with a fashion sense. Adidas was created in 1948 in Germany by Adolf "Adi" Dassler. Adolf had previously been in a partnership with his brother Rudolf in an operation known as Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.

Their reputation was enhanced at the 1936 Summer Olympics (in Berlin) when Adi arrived at the Games village and persuaded American sprinter Jessie Owens to wear his spikes. Owens went on to win four gold medals and his shoes attracted world-wide attention.

After World War II the brothers had an acrimonious split. Adi formed Adidas and Rudi would become his fiercest rival when he created Puma.
7. In the Marvel Comics' universe Dragon Man is an android who develops a crush on which "difficult to see" heroine?

Answer: Sue Richards

Sue Richards is a member of the Fantastic Four and has the power to render herself invisible (hence the "difficult to see" bit). Dragon Man made his first appearance in "Fantastic Four" #35 in February, 1965. He was constructed by Professor Gregson Gilbert and bought to life by Diablo the Alchemist.

Some of the potions used by Diablo in this experiment have contributed toward Dragon Man's powers, which include super strength and durability. He has been known to take on and hold his own against some of the Marvel powerhouses such as the Hulk, Hercules and the Thing.

He has anti-gravity generators attached to his body which allow him get airborne. He does possess wings though these are used for manoeuvring rather than flight. His vulnerability, like most dragons, he does not do well in extremely cold conditions.
8. The Playland Amusement Park in Rye, New York uses a dragon as its mascot. It is also the name of its central attraction. Which of the following is it?

Answer: Rollercoaster

Playland began its operations in May of 1928 and its iconic Dragon Coaster was constructed the following year. Like most coasters that were built during this period the Dragon Coaster features a tunnel along a portion of its track. The designers took the opportunity to shape this tunnel into the body of a writhing dragon with the entrance being its wide open jaws.

The facade comes complete with glowing eyes and nostrils that can blow steam. In all, the ride spans 3,400 feet and, at its peak, it stands at 85 feet.

The ride is not without its share of incidents with an eight year old girl choking to death while chewing gum on the ride in 1988.
9. In the animated feature film "Quest for Camelot" what is the unusual feature of the dragon that assists the heroine, Kayley, in her mission?

Answer: It has two heads

"Quest for Camelot" was released by Warner Bros in 1998 and follows the story of a teenage girl who wishes to follow in her father's footsteps and become a knight of the Round Table.
The dragon's two heads reveal opposing personalities. Devon, voiced by Eric Idle, is the intelligent one and Cornwall (Don Rickles) revels in his boorish temperament. The two heads struggle to live with each and just want to be separated. As a dragon they (it) cannot fly nor breathe fire. It is revealed later that the two heads need to work together if they are to succeed.
The film brings together the varied talents of Cary Elwes, Gary Oldman, Jane Seymour and Pierce Brosnan as the voice of King Arthur.
10. "The Red Dragon" is a 1946 mystery film that features which notable Asian detective?

Answer: Charlie Chan

Despite the hoopla and the tagline "The screen's number one sleuth meets his deadliest adversary" this Charlie Chan adventure proved to be a bit of a fizzer. The screen's number one detective goes on the hunt for a missing bomb formula and uncovers three murders on the way. Charlie Chan was created by author Earl Derr Biggers who took a risk when he decided to portray a lead Chinese character in a fashion other than as the "yellow peril", a typecasting that was prevalent at the time.

The gamble paid off. Charlie Chan was a hit in a variety of mediums including print, radio and television. Over forty Charlie Chan mysteries appeared on the big screen and this one, "The Red Dragon", was the 35th in the series. For those keen on the useless trivia bits - Charlie Chan had fourteen sons.

The Red Dragon in the title is a brand of ink.
