Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which DC hero first introduced in "Doom Patrol" #99 in 1965 would best be described by these three song titles? "The Animal I Have Become" "It Ain't Easy Being Green" "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Answer: Beast Boy

The answer is Beast Boy because he is a shapeshifter who only becomes animals, has green skin, and is a founding member of the Teen Titans team. Animal Man does have a connection to animals, but he doesn't physically become them, doesn't have green skin and isn't a teenager. Green Lantern wears the color green and could and has created animals, but he too doesn't actually become an animal and isn't a teenager. Killer Croc while green and looks similar to an animal isn't a teenager or a hero.

"The Animal I Have Become" is performed by Three Days Grace.
"It Ain't Easy Being Green" is performed by Kermit the Frog.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is performed by Nirvana.
2. What Marvel hero first introduced in his own book published in 1962 best fits with these three songs? "Radioactive" "The Bomb" "The Beast in Me"

Answer: The Incredible Hulk

The reason the Hulk is the answer is because he was exposed to Gamma Radiation while saving Rick Jones from a Gamma Bomb being tested and Dr. Bruce Banner's transformation is triggered by anger. Spider-Man was created because of radioactivity however, it was from a radioactive spider and not a radioactive bomb explosion. She-Hulk received her powers through a blood transfusion from Dr. Banner, her cousin, not direct exposure to radiation. A-Bomb, who is Rick Jones, created a serum which gave himself the ability to transform into a Hulk-like character at will.

"Radioactive" is performed by Imagine Dragons.
"The Bomb" is performed by Pigeon John.
"The Beast in Me" is performed by Johnny Cash.
3. Using the three song titles, can you surmise the name of this Marvel heroine who debuted in 1964's X-Men #4? "Lady in Red" "Black Magic Woman" "Born This Way"

Answer: Scarlet Witch

The reason Scarlet Witch is the correct answer is she not only wears red, but uses it in her name, she uses hex magic and because she is a mutant, she was born with her powers. Zatanna is often believed to have been born with her magic ability, however her costume isn't red and more importantly is from DC comics not Marvel. Agatha Harkness does wear red and is one of the original witches connected to the Salem witch trials who survived and later became Scarlet Witch's mentor however, she wasn't born with her witchcraft as a natural ability. Enchantress, is a villain, who was born in Asgard, but like Agatha Harkness, she was taught her magic not born with it.

"Lady In Red" is performed by Chris De Burgh.
"Black Magic Woman" is performed by Fleetwood Mac.
"Born This Way" is performed by Lady Gaga.
4. Can you guess the major Marvel villain who debuted in The Invincible Iron Man #55 first published in 1973? "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" "Dear Death" "Infinity"

Answer: Thanos

Thanos is the correct answer because he would happily destroy the world (and the universe) to impress his love, Death, and to do this he gathers the Infinity Stones and harnesses their power in the Infinity Gauntlet. Doctor Doom wants to rule the world not destroy it and while not opposed to killing has no interest in Death. Apocalypse, is a mutant born in Ancient Egypt and is so powerful he summons/creates his own version of Death to be one of his Four Horsemen to kill, but isn't looking to destroy the world just create one where only the strongest rule. Dormammu wants to rule all dimensions and quite possibly can live forever, but he wants to enslave all the dimensions in the Marvel universe not just destroy them to impress Death.

"It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" is performed by REM.
"Dear Death" is performed by Beyond the Black.
"Infinity" is performed by Mariah Carey.
5. First appearing in Marvels #1 published by Timely Comics in 1939 and later reimagined by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for his debut in the Fantastic Four #1 issue, what is the name of this hero described by these song titles? "Fireball" "Hot Stuff" "Through the Fire and Flames"

Answer: Human Torch

Human Torch is the correct answer because he creates fireballs and is covered in fire. While all of the choices given has a connection to fire, there are significant differences between the last three: Pyro is a villain, Phoenix is female, and Sunfire generates super heated plasma not fire.

"Fireball" is performed by Pitbull.
"Hot Stuff" is performed by Donna Summers.
"Through the Fire and Flames" is performed by Dragonforce.
6. First appearing in Journey into Mystery #83 (Aug. 1962), can you decipher which Marvel Hero is best described by the three song titles given? "Thunderstruck" "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" "In the Realm of Asgard"

Answer: Thor

Thor is the correct answer because he is from Asgard, is the God of Thunder, and uses the hammer Mjolnir. Loki is Thor's brother and from Asgard, but is God of Mischief and Lies, not of thunder. Thunderstrike is Eric Masterson and while he did wield Mjolnir for a while, he is from Earth not Asgard. Beta Ray Bill is a member of the alien race the Korbinites, and he too wielded Mjolnir for a while before it returned to Thor.

"Thunderstruck" is performed by AC/DC.
"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is performed by The Beatles.
"In the Realm of Asgard" is performed by Asgard.
7. First debuting in Marvel Spotlight #5 (Aug 1972), who is the Marvel Hero accurately described by these three song titles? "Screaming for Vengeance" "Hell On Wheels" "I Saw a Skull Instead of My Face"

Answer: Ghost Rider

The reason Ghost Rider is the correct answer is because he is the Spirit of Vengeance, a demon on a motorcycle, and instead of a face he has a flaming skull. Punisher does seek vengeance for the death of his family and typically wears a skull as his symbol, but he still has a face. Death does have a skull for a face, but in the Marvel universe, Death is a female and while acts of vengeance are performed in her name, she isn't actively giving out vengeance. Vengeance is almost the correct answer here, he does ride a motorcycle, has a flaming head, and seeks vengeance on sinners, but the major differences are he is a villain, and he is an entity sent by Heaven instead of Hell.

"Screaming for Vengeance" is performed by Judas Priest.
"Hell of Wheels" is performed by Cher.
"I Saw a Skull Instead of My Face" is performed by Dee Dee Ramone.
8. Debuting in 1940 (if I tell the name of the book, the answer would be even more obvious) which massive DC villain best fits the three song title clues? "Smile" "Bat Out of Hell" "Psycho Killer"

Answer: Joker

Joker is the correct answer because of his permanent smile, he is Batman's greatest villain, and is a psychopath who kills using gas. Harley Quinn was once Joker's psychiatrist and was almost as deranged as Mr. J, but she has transitioned from villain to heroine. Lex Luthor is Superman's greatest villain and while a killer and psychotic he takes no pleasure from killing. Two Face is a Batman villain, he does kill and is certainly psychotic but, due to the damage to his right side of his face, he can't really smile.

"Smile" is performed by Nat King Cole.
"Bat Out of Hell" is performed by Meatloaf.
"Psycho Killer" is performed by Talking Heads.
9. This DC Hero debuted in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940 and later became a new character in Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (July 1984), can you guess who the three song titles given is describing? "Send in the Clowns" "Surfin' Bird" "Acrobat"

Answer: Robin/Nightwing

Robin/Nightwing is the correct answer because he was once part of the circus (thus the clowns reference) as an acrobat and is named after a bird. While Dove is a bird related hero and a highly trained acrobat, he was never a member of the circus. Silver Surfer is a Marvel hero and has no connection to acrobatics or birds. Bluebird is a DC heroine, who has become an ally of Batman and Nightwing, but she was never in the circus.

"Send in the Clowns" is performed by Barbra Streisand.
"Surfin' Bird" is performed by The Trashmen.
"Acrobat" is performed by U2.
10. This Marvel hero/villain made his debut in the Amazing Spider-Man #300 in May 1988. Using the three song title clues, can you figure out who he is? "Two is Better Than One" "Crazy Eddie's Last Hurrah" "Parasite"

Answer: Venom

Venom is the correct answer because he was created when an alien symbiote bonded with Eddie Brock. Eddie is often seen talking to himself, giving the appearance that he is crazy when in reality he is conversing with the symbiote which only he can hear. Also, if you have seen the Venom movie you would remember Eddie referring to the symbiote as a parasite (which really angered Venom). Moon Knight's real identity is Marc Spector and while technically crazy (he has split personalities) he doesn't have a connection to parasites. While Maggott has "parasites", he is a mutant whose real name is Japheth. Multiple Man, aka Jamie Madrox, has no connection to parasites, however because of his mutant powers, he can talk to himself by creating an exact duplicate of himself.

"Two is Better Than One" is performed by Boys Like Girls featuring Taylor Swift.
"Crazy Eddie's Last Hurrah" is performed by Reckless Kelly.
"Parasite" is performed by KISS.
