Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When "Tom and Jerry" was first released in 1940, Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse weren't known as Tom and Jerry.

Answer: True

When the "Tom and Jerry" series was first introduced in the 1940 cartoon "Puss Gets the Boot" Tom Cat was originally Jasper and Jerry Mouse was Jinx. Although Jinx wasn't mentioned in the episode entirely, in the 1941 successor "The Midnight Snack", they were both introduced as Tom and Jerry, names that would live on for decades.
2. How many Academy Awards did the original creators, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, win for "Tom and Jerry"?

Answer: Seven

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, professionally known as Hanna-Barbera, produced 114 "Tom and Jerry" shorts from 1940 to 1957 for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer animation studio. They had the same amount of Academy Awards for Best Short Film as Walt Disney, for his "Silly Symphonies", seven in total.
3. Did Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse ever talk in the original shorts?

Answer: Yes

Although only on rare occasions, Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse have been known to speak in some episodes, such as in the 1956 short "Blue Cat Blues" where Tom Cat narrates in the episode, or where both characters speak in the 1943 short "The Lonesome Mouse".
4. Mammy Two Shoes became a very controversial character for what reason?

Answer: She was a racial stereotype

Ever since she was introduced in the first cartoon in 1940, she has been seen by many as inappropriate, not only for the stereotypical portrayal of African-Americans, but for violence, such as when she would usually beat Tom with a broom. She made her final appearance in the 1952 "Tom and Jerry" cartoon "Push-Button Kitty". Soon after, she was replaced by a Caucasian blonde-haired teenager whose face appeared a lot more often than Mammy Two Shoes.
5. Did "Tom and Jerry" run longer than "Looney Tunes"?

Answer: No

The "Tom and Jerry" shorts were produced from 1940 to 1967, running for a total of 27 years. Meanwhile the "Looney Tunes" shorts ran from 1930 to 1969, a total of 39 years.
6. Who of these was a long-time producer of the "Tom and Jerry" shorts?

Answer: Fred Quimby

Fred Quimby, like Rudolf Ising, produced "Tom and Jerry" shorts since the beginning of the show in 1940. Unlike Ising, who only produced the "Puss Gets the Boot", Quimby went on to produce "Tom and Jerry" up until he retired in 1955.
7. Besides "Anchors Aweigh", what other movie features Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse?

Answer: Dangerous When Wet

Similar to the 1945 film "Anchors Aweigh", which featured Jerry Mouse next to Gene Kelly and Tom Cat briefly as a butler, "Dangerous When Wet", released in 1953, showed both Tom and Jerry together.
8. Was Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer the only company that produced "Tom and Jerry"?

Answer: No

Besides MGM, companies such as Rembrandt Films, lead by Gene Deich, or Sib Tower 12, started by Chuck Jones, created "Tom and Jerry" shorts.
9. All of the "Tom and Jerry" shorts were made in color.

Answer: True

Compared to other shows such as "Looney Tunes", or "Casper The Friendly Ghost", none of the "Tom and Jerry" shorts were made in black-and-white.
10. In the episode "Jerry's Diary", Tom threw what at Jerry's face?

Answer: A pie

The basic plot was Tom listened to a radio that said it was "Be Kind to Animals" day, and he was getting an array of items, like chocolate, and was going to give it to Jerry, but he found his diary and read it. He became infuriated with what was said in it, and destroyed all the other items he bought, except for a pie. He later threw it in Jerry's face.
