Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I decided to watch a 2012 movie I had heard about that was entitled "Life of Pi". I was amazed by this story of a teenage boy and a tiger whose name was Richard Parker. What was the setting for most of this film?

Answer: Pacific Ocean

The movie starred Suraj Sharma, was directed by Ang Lee and was based on the book by Yann Martel. It is about a 16 year old boy and his family who run a zoo. They must move to Canada from India and during the travels the ship sinks, taking down many humans and zoo animals. After many twists and turns, Suraj finds himself alone in a life raft with a fierce tiger named Richard Parker. The movie offers up many different thought provoking questions.
In filming, four real tigers were used for motion capture and for important scenes. The rest of the film relied on digital techniques.
2. I then tuned in to listen to some music. My 1982 play list picked up a song called "Eye of the Tiger" that had been written for the "Rocky III" film. Who sang this song?

Answer: Survivor

Survivor was founded in 1978 by the guitarist and keyboardist. They soon recruited lead singer Dave Bickler and the rest of the band. Their big break occurred in 1982 when they were commissioned to write the theme to "Rocky III". Their song, "Eye of the Tiger", spent over six weeks at number one on the Billboard charts.

It is symbolic of a person's drive to reach the top of their game, regardless of obstacles. It has become an inspirational song for sports teams, people going through physical therapy, political candidates, and more. Survivor had several more hits before they disbanded in 1989.
3. I decided to read some poetry and ran across a work called "The Tyger". After some research, I found that it is a symbolic tiger which represents forces in the human soul. Who wrote this poem?

Answer: William Blake

The poem begins "Tyger Tyger burning bright, In the forests of the night" and is out of the book "Songs of Innocence and Experience". The work is made up of six quatrains in rhymed couplets. As the poem continues, the tiger morphs into different aspects of symbolism: morals, evil, creation, etc.
Blake was born in 1757 in London and became a book engraver by age 21. He soon turned to poetry and rose up among the Romantic artist movement. His personal experience, his religious beliefs, and world events all shaped his works. He was still producing artistic objects when he died at age 70.
4. I next picked up a children's book called "The House At Pooh Corner" where a delightful character named Tigger was introduced. What was, even according to him, an activity that Tiggers do best?

Answer: Bouncing

A.A. Milne wrote four books and two poetry collections featuring a stuffed animal named Winnie the Pooh and his friends. These characters were based on Milne's son Christopher Robin and his toys. "The House At Pooh Corner" was published in 1928 and introduced a character named Tigger.

He is known for his distinctive orange and black stripes, big eyes and chin, springy tail, and his absolute love of bouncing. He is very unique, for he joyfully announces that "the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is I'm the only one!"
5. I had heard about a streaming show that many people were discussing. I turned in to watch several episodes of "Tiger King". This is a fictional murder-for-hire story in the world of big cat breeding.

Answer: False

As strange as it sounds, this show is a true crime documentary about a former zookeeper named Joe Exotic. It ran for three seasons starting in 2020. The first season highlighted Joe's feud with Carole Baskin who ran a big cat rescue operation. As she tried to rescue the cats under his enterprise, he hired a hitman to kill her.

The second season focuses on Joe's imprisonment and issues with big cat collectors. The third season highlighted big cat recue organizations. The first season was wildly popular but later episodes came under criticism from various environmental and animal rights groups.
6. I decided to take a break and play a video game for some more entertainment. This one had Tiger Woods in the title but it did not involve an actual feline. What sport was being virtually played in this endeavour?

Answer: Golf

Tiger Woods is a golfer. He turned professional in 1996 and in 1997 he became the youngest man and the first African American to win the U.S. Masters. He has won multiple tournaments and set many records.
In 1998, Electronic Arts (EA) developed golf video games with the endorsement of Tiger Woods. As of 2022, there are 16 different EA "Tiger Woods" games. EA has sold over $700 million of these games and Woods himself has made around $6 million per year from it.
7. I was watching some television for entertainment when a commercial interrupted my show. It was a character named Tony the Tiger and he was shouting "They're Gr-r-reat!" What product was being advertised?

Answer: Breakfast cereal

Tony the Tiger is the mascot for the Kellogg's cereal "Frosted Flakes". In 1952, Tony was created along with a kangaroo, an elephant, and a gnu. Consumers chose Tony and in 1953 an advertising agency put him in an ad in "LIFE" magazine. Thurl Ravenscroft was hired and spent fifty years as the voice of Tony the Tiger and his phrase "They're Gr-r-reat!".
Tony has appeared on cereal boxes, television advertisements, and even a hot air balloon.
8. I read a book and then watched the movies based upon it. It concerned a small boy named Mowgli and animals he interacted with including Shere Khan the tiger. What was the name of the novel written by Rudyard Kipling?

Answer: The Jungle Book

"The Jungle Book" was written in 1894 by Rudyard Kipling as a collection of stories. A small boy in India, named Mowgli, is abandoned and raised by a group of friendly wolves. He befriends people like Baloo the Bear and Bagheera the Panther. He learns from them life lessons such as facing fears as he takes on Shere Khan the Tiger. The stories are based on Indian myths and legends.

The book was adapted into multiple movies, including a Disney animation adaptation in 1967 and live-action versions in 1994 and 2016.
9. I decided to get out of the house in London and take the kids to an amusement park. They had a fantastic time riding the flume ride called Tiger Rock! What attraction were we visiting?

Answer: Chessington World of Adventures

Chessington World of Adventures Resort is a zoo, theme park, and hotel near London, England. It opened in 1931 as a large zoo and in 1987 an amusement park was added. It contains roller coasters, water rides, swinging rides and lots of children's areas.

The Tiger Rock is a flume ride that allows the riders to see the park's real Amur tigers as they pass by and then drops the riders through a large rock tiger head into the final splash down.
10. I picked up the comics out of the newspaper to entertain myself. I began laughing at the antics of "Calvin and Hobbes". Hobbes is a cute stuffed tiger. Who is Calvin?

Answer: A little boy

"Calvin and Hobbes" is a comic strip created by Bill Watterson that ran for ten years, from 1985 to 1995. It is about a six year old boy and his stuffed tiger. Watterson named them after the 16th century theologian John Calvin and the 17th century philosopher Thomas Hobbes. In the comics, most people see Hobbes as a toy but Calvin sees him as a live tiger and very much real.
The strip was very popular and ran in more than 2,400 newspapers and has spawned 18 books. Watterson stopped drawing these characters in 1995 saying he wanted "to leave them at the height of their power".
