Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In April 1988, Barry Windham, a longtime fan favorite joined "The Horsemen" for the first time to the disgust of friends and fans. In order to cement his status Barry turned on one of his allies during a tag team match. Who was this?

Answer: Lex Luger

At the time Windham and Lex Luger were the reigning NWA Tag Team Champions having just won the belts one month prior at the very first "Clash of Champions". Flair and his cohorts had been courting Barry for some time and he chose the perfect time for his defection. By turning on Luger he allowed Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson to regain the titles they had dropped at "The Clash".
2. In May 1993, on Ric Flair's television segment, "A Flair for the Gold", founding members Flair and The Andersons had been teasing a "Horsemen" reunion for a while. What the fans had expected and what they got was a different thing. Who was the final "Horsemen" revealed on this night?

Answer: "Pretty" Paul Roma

Paul Roma, who along with Jim Powers, comprised a jobber to the stars tag team in the WWF from 1987-1990, was the final member. Roma achieved some more success as a member of "Power & Glory" with the late Hercules Hernandez from 1990-1991. After an ill fated attempt at a boxing career, he returned to wrestling in WCW.

His introduction as a "Horsemen" was a complete shock, at least to me, and this was the weakest incarnation of the faction. Roma did not fit in with Arn and Ric who to this day regret his inclusion and visa versa.
3. "The Four Horsemen" more or less came to pass in January 1986 when Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard and The Andersons, had to share an interview during which one of the four made a reference to the famed "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". Who made this legendary comment?

Answer: Arn Anderson

Known for years as "The Enforcer", Arn Anderson inadvertently dubbed the group with their famous moniker. For months Arn and his storyline relative Ole had been playing the muscle for NWA Champion Ric Flair in Flair's feuds with Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA.

The storyline was that Flair and The Andersons were cousins, a factor that would play out in Ole's ouster from the faction. Tully Blanchard who along with manager J.J. Dillon had carved out a nice niche over the previous weeks were added and history was made. Ole was ousted in February 1987 when he began to devote more and more time to training his son. Blanchard referred to Ole's son as a "Little Snot Nose" and Ole reminded Tully that Tully was the only member not related by bloodline. Ole was tossed and Lex Luger was brought in.
4. The group, which many consider the finest, included Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard and of course J.J. Dillon as the manager. The reason why they are considered the best is because in addition to their considerable talents, they also all held titles simultaneously. Which of the following wrestler(s) are matched with the wrong championship?

Answer: Arn Anderson, NWA Television Title

While "Double A" held the NWA/WCW Television Title four times from 1986 thru 1995, he did not hold the belt during this run of "The Horsemen" which lasted from April 1988 to September 1988. During this period Anderson formed one of the most successful and formidable duos with Tully Blanchard.

This special group along with their infamous manager was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012 by their longtime enemy Dusty Rhodes.
5. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever and wrestling careers are no exception as Arn Anderson was forced into an early retirement in August 1997 due to injury. In Andersons's heartfelt retirement speech on "Nitro" Arn handpicked his successor to carry on the mantle of "The Enforcer" for the quartet. Who was the famous wrestler who filled the role, albeit very briefly.

Answer: Curt Hennig

The late, great Curt Hennig, the former two time WWF Intercontinental Champion was the self anointed successor for Arn Anderson. Unfortunately, it was an elaborate ruse as Hennig turned on his friends and joined the hated N.W.O. To make matters worse Anderson's retirement speech was parodied by the group at the request of Eric Bischoff.

This act did nothing for Bischoff's questionable reputation and the act remains a sore subject for some fans to this day.
6. The original quartet of Flair, Blanchard and The Andersons were known for their gang style attacks on many of the NWA's fan favorites of the era which naturally resulted in many, many injuries to some stars. Which of the following injuries can "The Horsemen" not claim ownership of?

Answer: Nikita Koloff's neck injury

Using two, three or all four members "The Horsemen" managed to inflict pain and immediately establish their reputation for ruthlessness. Nikita Koloff's neck injury sustained in the spring of 1987 was not at the hands of the famous group but rather the handiwork of "Captain Redneck" Dick Murdock. Murdock was a longtime friend and the original tag team partner of Dusty Rhodes in the early and mid 1970's. Dick Murdock was also fiercely patriotic being a member of the U.S Marines and a Vietnam veteran. Murdock turned on Rhodes and Koloff in a six man tag team match because he did not believe Koloff's new found American attitude.

The answer is wrong on another level as Ole Anderson was also gone by this time.
7. In late 1989 Flair and The Andersons reformed the group with this mega popular star of the NWA/WCW late 80's thru mid 90's era. The inclusion of this star in the faction marked the first time that the group were billed as fan favorites. It did not last too long. Who was this superstar?

Answer: Sting

In late 1989 when Arn Anderson returned from his year long tenure in the WWF the widely popular Sting was added to the ranks of the group. Immediately tensions flared when Sting bested Flair to win "The Iron Man Tournament" at Starrcade '89. Just two months later Flair and his longtime cohorts, Ole & Arn, ousted the Stinger by brutally assaulting him leaving him with a knee injury which prevented him from wrestling for several months. Sting did get revenge when he defeated Flair on July 7, 1990 for his first WCW Heavyweight Title.
8. In July 1987 at "The Great American Bash" one of the all time greatest "gimmick matches" "The War Games/The Match Beyond" was introduced. During the bout The Road Warriors legitimately injured Dillon's shoulder and thus he couldn't compete in the rematch at the conclusion of "The Bash". A hulking masked big man, called "The War Machine" took his place, who was the man under the mask who was a "Horsemen Affiliate" for one card?

Answer: Big Bubba Rogers

The ill fated "War Machine" was in fact Big Bubba Rogers under a mask. Rogers was best known in his early NWA stint as the silent bodyguard of the mouthy Jim Cornette. Putting Rogers under a mask enabled him to maintain his heat knowing that he was to take the fall for the heel team.

In 1988, Rogers took his game to The WWF where he achieved more success portraying the former prison guard The Big Boss Man. Sadly, Ray Traylor, left us in 2004 at the tender age of 42 when he suffered a massive heart attack.
9. By January 1989 Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard and James J Dillon had all departed for The WWF leaving just Ric Flair and Barry Windham. Briefly the group was going to continue with the legendary Hiro Matsuda as manager and two more men filling the Anderson and Blanchard roles. Who were these men that never made it to the actual "Horsemen" roster in early 1989?

Answer: Hacksaw Butch Reed and Bob Orton Jr.

Bob Orton Jr. and Hacksaw Butch Reed both of whom had signed on with the company in early 1989 were briefly considered as possible "Horsemen" reinforcements. Windham would have tagged with Orton while Reed would have been given a significant singles push. Ultimately, Windham left for The WWF in February 1989 immediately after dropping The U.S. Title to Lex Luger. Two spots was hard enough but three spots; the powers that be decided to put "The Horsemen" on hold until Arn returned in December 1989.
10. Like I said earlier, some incarnations have been great and some have been flops. Some have had fan appeal and not the full support of the wrestlers within the actual "Horsemen" grouping. One such group included veteran members Ric Flair, Barry Windham, Arn Anderson with Ole serving as a manager. The fourth man was a rising talent who was prone to violent outbursts, who was it?

Answer: Sid Vicious

In the spring of 1990, Sid Vicious, then thought to be a rising talent in the industry was brought in as a "Horsemen". While some of the younger fans did enjoy this quartet behind the scenes Sid was nothing but trouble for his colleagues with whom he did not mesh. Years later, Vicious and Arn Anderson engaged in a real life brawl where Sid stabbed Arn multiple times with a pair of scissors. To this day Ric Flair and Arn Anderson do not consider Vicious a true "Horsemen"
