Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. August Pullman is a typical 10 year old boy who is obsessed with "Star Wars" and loves his dog Daisy. However, he has had multiple surgeries and people can be surprised by his appearance. What is different about August Pullman?

Answer: He has mandibulofacial dysostosis.

August has Mandibulofacial dysostosis, also known as Treacher Collins Syndrome, which is a very rare condition, occurring in only 1 in 50,000 births. It is a genetic condition that alters the bones and tissues of the face. Treacher Collins syndrome is not associated with intellectual disability, although those with significant facial differences report that they are often treated as though they are intellectually disabled. August is one of the narrators and he describes himself going to school for the first time.

He has been homeschooled because he has had 27 surgeries during his early childhood to repair his facial structure.
2. Auggie visits his new school before school starts. How does Principal Tushman make him feel comfortable?

Answer: He makes jokes and discusses classes that would interest Auggie.

Before visiting the school Auggie and his parents joked about the principal's name Mr. Tushman. Upon arrival at the school, Mr.Tushman greeted Auggie and shook his hand 'perfectly normally'. He made sure he could look at Auggie's face. He said he knew about Auggie, and named his interests and some classes that Auggie would like.

He then admitted that having a name like Tushman wasn't easy to live with, putting Auggie at ease---that was, until he heard other kids arriving.
3. Auggie was surprised and anxious when Mr. Tushman brought in some classmates to give him a tour of the school. How did Auggie's classmates react to him?

Answer: They were all superficially polite but their reactions varied.

All the kids were polite in front of Mr. Tushman, but it turned out that Julian was mean, Charlotte was very talkative, providing information but was not really friendly, and Jack tried to be helpful.
4. Auggie made two good friends, Summer and Jack. He notices that some kids don't want to be friends with him. He's OK with that until the day he overhears Jack joining in with the bullying. On which holiday was it and how did it happen?

Answer: On Halloween when Auggie wore a different costume.

August told everyone that he was going to be a "Star Wars" character for Halloween, but wears his bleeding scream costume from last year instead, so no one realizes that he is there. August overhears Jack saying that he would commit suicide if he looked like Auggie and that the principal asked him to be friends with him, and that Auggie follows him around. Jack's comments are particularly hurtful as Auggie believed that Jack was his good friend. Halloween is usually Auggie's favorite holiday because he gets to be just like all the other kids, but Auggie pretended he was sick and left school.
5. After Auggie overheard Jack's mean comments, they did not speak to each other for a while. Did Auggie and Jack repair their friendship, and if so, how?

Answer: Yes. Their mutual friend gave a hint and Jack emailed his apology.

Jack was confused about why Auggie was no longer friendly to him. Auggie's friend Summer would not betray Auggie's confidence, but she gave Jack a hint to help him realize what he had done. Jack then emailed Auggie to apologize and ask forgiveness.
6. What were the consequences when Jack punched Julian in the face?

Answer: Jack was suspended from school and had to write letters of apology.

The teacher assigned Jack and Auggie to work together on the science project. Julian told Jack he should switch and work with him, and referred to Auggie as a freak. Jack reacted by punching Julian in the face. Jack was then suspended and had to write letters of apology. When Jack returned to school after break he found that Julian had turned most of the class against him.
7. Why doesn't Via want to invite her family to the school play?

Answer: Via has felt defined by Auggie and his condition, but at her new school one knows.

Via feels that she has always been known as Auggie's big sister, as his condition is so noticeable and she has always had to defend or explain him. At her new school her old friends joined the popular crowd and she is now meeting friends who share her interests. Auggie and the family realize that she doesn't want them at her school play.

A family argument ensues, but it is forgotten when their beloved dog falls ill.
8. How did the class overnight trip change Auggie's social situation?

Answer: Classmates that had been Julian's friends, saw Auggie being bullied and stepped in.

On the overnight trip, Auggie was relieved that his bully Julian was not coming on the trip. That night, Auggie and Jack needed to use the bathroom and left the movie site. Jack wanted to use the woods and they encountered bigger older kids from another school who began bullying Auggie and making cruel remarks. Boys who had been Julian's friends happened by and defended Auggie.

They ended up helping Auggie and Jack to run away through the woods. Afterwards, the boys told everyone how mean the kids were and how brave Auggie had been.

After the bus ride home, all of Auggie's classmates said goodbye to him, when before they had pretended he did not exist.
9. Although Via went out for the lead role of Emily in the school play, "Our Town", she was cast as the understudy. Her former best friend Miranda was cast as Emily instead. How did Via end up performing as Emily after all?

Answer: Miranda pretended to be sick so Via could play the lead role.

Before the play, Miranda saw Via's family and realized she missed them and her friendship with Via; so she told the director that she could not go on. After the play, Via and Auggie's mom asked Miranda to go out with their family. Via agreed, marking the end of the rift between them.
10. For what characteristic(s) did Auggie win the school medal?

Answer: Courage and Greatness

Auggie won for Courage and Greatness, for many reasons. Mr. Tushman, and finally his classmates, saw him persevere, despite poor treatment by others, without retaliating or becoming bitter or angry.
