Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which society keeps trying to kill Hal and Roger?

Answer: The Leopard Society

Joro belongs to this murderous group, and promises to kill Hal and Roger Hunt. Of course, he doesn't. The members of the Leopard Society dress like leopards and are known amongst the locals as 'leopard men'.
2. What does Roger name the two leopard cubs he finds?

Answer: Cha and Chu

Roger has a gift for making friends with animals. He finds two abandoned cubs after he is on the leopard man hunt in Chapter Two.
3. How do Hal and Roger first learn about the ill chief?

Answer: From the medicine man

When Chu is snatched and nearly sacrificed, Hal and Roger go to save him. Hal wants to see the chief, but the medicine man says he is ill. Toto merely translates, and the messenger boy and sacrificing stone don't exist.
4. What does Hal do to earn the trust of the baboons?

Answer: Cures a mother baboon's baby.

I love this chapter, 'The Poisoned Baboon'. You learn so much about baboons; how they act, what they eat and all about their amazing intelligence.
Colonel Bigg has laid down some ant powder, and a baby baboon, not knowing what it was, ate some. He became poisoned, and in this pulse - quickening chapter Hal cures him.
5. What is the name of the female camp Alsatian?

Answer: Zulu

Zulu is the big Alsatian that mothers Chu and Cha. She also accompanies the leopard hunt in Chapter One.
6. How does the chief punish the medicine man for trying to kill him?

Answer: He sends the medicine man into exile.

Hal had come to the village to visit the ill chief. He finds the medicine man with a 'chook', an extremely sharp porcupine quill that can go through the skin without being felt, and some mrichu tree poison paste to put into the chief's blood and kill him within minutes.

He shouts out, and the chief wakes and tells the people to let Hal free (for sitting on the medicine man in attempt to control him) and hold the medicine man. He then sends the medicine man out of the village and tells him never to return.
7. What does Willard Price compare the buffaloes to, at the very beginning of Chapter Thirteen, 'The Charge of the Heavy Brigade'?

Answer: Thunder clouds

'They looked like a hundred thunder-clouds. They didn't seem to belong in this land of warmth and sunshine.'
Willard Price uses this simile for the reader to conjure up a picture of a huge, moving, sea of black buffalo.
8. Where does Mr. Bullwinkle become sure that Colonel Bigg is a fraud?

Answer: Nairobi

In Chapter Five, 'The Unlucky Colonel Bigg', Willard Price explains how Bigg became a fake Hunter and took two Americans to Nairobi. It mentions Nairobi several times in the part where Mr. and Mrs. Bullwinkle discover that Bigg really is a fraud.
9. Which of Willard Price's books is mentioned at the VERY end of the story?

Answer: Elephant Adventure

'So both Roger and the reader must wait a bit until Hal returns. The adventures of the Hunts in pursuit of the biggest of all land animals will be told in "Elephant Adventure".'
10. In the last chapter, it says, 'The imprisoned leopard-men would be handed over to the police at Kampala.' What country must we assume we are in?

Answer: Uganda

Kampala is the capital city of Uganda.
