Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the following tournaments is not regarded as one of the four "majors" in men's professional golf?

Answer: Italian Open

There are four "majors" held every year in men's golf. The oldest is the Open Championship, held in the UK, and often referred to as the British Open. The other three all take place in the USA - the US Open, The Masters, and the PGA Championship. The Italian Open is an important event on the European Tour but does not have major status.
2. Which is the only one of these European cities which did not play host to the Summer Olympics in the 20th century?

Answer: Reykjavik

Reykjavik is a small city which is the capital of Iceland, and would be a fairly unlikely candidate to host the Summer games. Amsterdam hosted the games in 1928, Berlin in 1936 and Barcelona in 1992.
3. Three of these teams were American football teams which were members of the National Football League in 2021, but which one was a team in another sport altogether?

Answer: Detroit Red Wings

The Buccaneers, Chiefs and Packers are all NFL teams who have won the sport's biggest prize, the Super Bowl, on more than one occasion. The Red Wings are an NHL ice hockey team who have won that sport's biggest honour, the Stanley Cup, multiple times. Detroit does have an NFL team, but their nickname is the Lions.
4. Three of these soccer clubs play in England, but which one plays their home games in Scotland?

Answer: Celtic

Celtic are based in Glasgow, Scotland, and created history in 1967 when they became the first British club to win the European Champions Cup. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are all based in London, England.
5. Three of these women were famous competitors in athletics (track & field), but which one was a champion in another sport altogether?

Answer: Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor, from Ireland, is a professional boxer who has been world champion in both the junior-welterweight and lightweight classes. Kelly Holmes (Great Britain) has won Olympic gold at both 800 m and 1500 m; Florence Griffith-Joyner (USA) won three golds at the 1988 Olympics, at 100 m, 200 m and 4x100 m relay; and Cathy Freeman (Australia) won 400 m gold on home soil at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
6. There are four major tennis tournaments each year which are designated Grand Slam status. Can you pick out the one from this list that isn't one of the four?

Answer: Pan Pacific Open

Wimbledon, first played in 1877, the French Open (1891) and the Australian Open (1905) are all Grand Slam tournaments, with the fourth one being the US Open, first played in 1881. The Pan Pacific Open, which takes place in Tokyo, Japan, is a regular tour event for women only.
7. Which one of the following sports does NOT involve a ball or balls?

Answer: Badminton

Snooker involves potting balls into pockets with a cue; lacrosse is a team sport which involves shooting a ball into the opponent's goal using a stick with a net on the end of it; and squash is a racket sport played in an enclosed court. Badminton uses rackets and a net, somewhat like tennis, but, instead of a ball, it uses a shuttlecock, which is composed of feathers in a cork base.
8. Three of these baseball legends played for the New York Yankees - which one played for a different team from the Big Apple?

Answer: Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson made history in 1947 when he became the first African-American player to play in Major League Baseball in the 20th century. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and helped them win their first World Series crown in 1955. The other three players all won multiple titles with the Yankees.
9. The sport of men's cycling includes three Grand Tours, multiple stage races which last for around three weeks. Which one of the following is NOT one of these three races?

Answer: Tour Down Under

The Tour de France is the oldest and most prestigious of the three Grand Tours, founded in 1903. The Giro (Tour of Italy) first took place in 1909, and the first Vuelta (Tour of Spain) took place in 1935. The Tour Down Under takes place in Australia, and is a six-day race first held in 1999.
10. Cricket is a sport that has different versions, to do with duration. Can you pick out the one of those listed below that doesn't actually exist?

Answer: Three-Day Event

A Test Match is the oldest form of international cricket, with matches lasting up to five days, often without an outright winner! One-Day Internationals were introduced in the early 1970s, with each team bowling a set number of overs (usually 50). Twenty20 is the most modern version, introduced in the early 21st century, with only 20 overs per side, which leads to batsmen playing attacking shots most of the time. Three-Day Eventing is a competition in equestrianism, not cricket.
