Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who do you need to repair your burst water pipes?

Answer: Plumber

Plumbers deal with the systems which bring water into your home and take it away, so this includes water for kitchens, bathrooms and heating. They also install toilets and the pipework needed to take away sewage. The name originates from the Latin word for lead, plumbus, as pipework used to be made from lead.
2. Who can repair your broken window?

Answer: Glazier

Glaziers are specialists in installing glass, which can be in windows, mirrors, skylights or shower screens, just to give a few examples. Glass isn't just used in houses, of course, so some glaziers will be experts in fitting glass windows to vehicles, including those used on the roads or in the air, like aircraft.
3. Who can mend your shoes?

Answer: Cobbler

Mending shoes in modern times is much less common than it used to be. Most shoes are made by mass production, and are thrown away once they are worn out. Despite this, the more expensive shoes, made by craftspeople, do need to be repaired and the cobbler is the person who can do this for you.
4. Who do you need to hang a new wooden door for you?

Answer: Carpenter

Carpenters are tradespeople skilled in making and fitting things made from wood, so your carpenter could make the door for you before fixing it in place in your home. There is likely to be lots of wood in your home, even in places you can't see. For example, the roof may be supported on timber trusses, a sort of framework.

In the past, ships were built from wood, and small boats are still constructed this way.
5. Who is the best person to mend your car (automobile)?

Answer: Mechanic

Motor mechanics are the best people to repair your car when it goes wrong, unless it's something very simple to fix, like filling up the radiator or fuel tank. Mechanics, especially with modern cars, need to to know a lot about engines and even computers as these are used in vehicles.

Some mechanics can do anything that needs to be done, while others will specialise in just one part of the vehicle, like the tyres or brakes.
6. Who can repair your clothes for you when you've torn them?

Answer: Tailor

Tailors are experts in making and repairing clothes, so that's the person to go to. Tailors are particularly good at making clothes that fit you perfectly, as they can measure you before making a garment to your exact measurements. They can also alter clothes you already have, by taking in or letting out seams, or making sleeves shorter, for example.
7. Who could have repaired the hole in your cooking pot in the past?

Answer: Tinker

Tinkers aren't seen much these days, but in years gone by they were commonly seen travelling from town to town to mend pots and pans, and other metal objects. These days, the cookware we buy lasts much longer and we tend to just replace it rather than get it repaired.
8. Who could rebuild your garden wall when it falls down?

Answer: Bricklayer

Walls are usually made from bricks or stone, so the expert to call in is the bricklayer. It might look easy to build a wall, laying bricks side by side and on top of each other - we all did that when we were children, after all - but the skill is to make sure it's all level and doesn't fall down as soon as the wind blows.
9. Your kitchen floor needs fixing, so who might be able to repair it for you?

Answer: Tiler

Kitchen floors can be covered with lots of different things, but tiles are a popular choice and tilers are the people who know how to lay them properly. Tiles can also be used to cover walls, especially in bathrooms and kitchens where the walls need to be protected from water. The gaps between them are filled with a special kind of cement, called grout.
10. Who can you call in when your lights stop working?

Answer: Electrician

You need electricity for all sorts of things in your home. Your television, computer and washing machine all need electricity to work. Even your mobile (cell) phone needs electricity to charge it up, so if your power goes off the electrician is the person to call out to fix it.
